  • “Airborne All the Way”
“KNEES IN THE BREEZE” “Airborne All The Way” The History of the LJT by Jil Liberty Jump Team was formed in answer to an invitation by Mayor Landry of Carentan, France to perform a commemorative jump there for the 2006 D-Day ceremonies. Dominique Launay, who at the time, had jumped with another group for the 60th Anniversary was asked by the Mayor to organize this. Word got out to our friends and before we knew it we had 14 static line jumpers and 6 HALO to bring in flags. The HALO jumpers included the Navy Leap Frogs CO, a French Gendarmarie, 3 ex SFG soldiers and a former Marine LTC. We all met in May 2006 in Springfield MO to train. Our Jumpmaster was Roger Wolf, former 1st SFG. Mayor Landry along with Gilles Barbe of the KERDUN Association worked to make the Carentan jump a big festival. We used our contacts to invite the Military Attaché from the US Embassy in Paris along with other US Military personnel. We decided as well to jump the 507th PIR designated DZ called DZ ’T’. In Amfreville we were joined by Jil’s father, LTC Gordon K. Smith (507th PIR) and several friends of his from the British Commandos as well as our US vets and spouses. We were off to a good start! We needed a name, so we adopted the name LIBERTY JUMP TEAM because the Mayor called the event the LIBERTY JUMP. We made patches, coins, caps and polos with this name. We hired the beautiful C47,’Drag Em Oot’ for our airframe.

  • THE HERO and the COIN: a Story for Future Generations
THE HERO & THE COIN ‘A Story for Future Generations’ By Brian J. Miller Copyright © 2009 Brian J. Miller Page 1 THE HERO AND THE COIN: A story for Future Generations Loose coins bouncing around in your pocket or purse can be useful but at the same time they can be noisy, heavy and with today‟s prices, some would say a nuisance. It seems nothing is priced in even dollar terms and given that local sales taxes add odd amounts to transactions, it is inevitable that we get some of them in return. If you are like me then for convenience sake most of this change ends up being collected in one of those five gallon plastic water jugs or some other container and later taken to a bank where it is exchanged for paper money. Recently I received a coin from a World War II veteran that had a special kind of value and meaning. It is a bit larger and heavier than an Eisenhower Dollar coin but it even won‟t buy you a cup of coffee. It is a Challenge Coin. THE HERO: JACK AGNEW & THE FILTHY THIRTEEN In today‟s world it seems that the term hero is an often over used expression to describe sports figures, entertainers and other prominent people. As time passes the stories of true heroes who are not in the public‟s perception or limelight can get lost to future generations. How do we define a true hero? What qualifies one to be labeled a hero? Unfortunately Jack Agnew would be the first to say his service during World War II does not make him a hero.

My dissertation committee guided this project from start to finish with unwavering intellectual generosity. Phil Deloria helped me turn a tenuous idea into a fully-formed dissertation. He read every word, offered invaluable feedback, wrote letters, provided me with professional guidance, and most importantly brought a genuine enthusiasm and friendship to his advising that I am incredibly grateful for. Phil consistently identified what was most interesting in my writing and helped me bring that to the forefront, and this project would not exist without him.
