LBP0018 Written evidence submitted by The Northern Powerhouse Education Consortium Education Select Committee Left behind white pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds Inquiry SUBMISSION FROM THE NORTHERN POWERHOUSE EDUCATION CONSORTIUM Introduction and summary of recommendations Northern Powerhouse Education Consortium are a group of organisations with focus on education and disadvantage campaigning in the North of England, including SHINE, Northern Powerhouse Partnership (NPP) and Tutor Trust. This is a joint submission to the inquiry, acting together as ‘The Northern Powerhouse Education Consortium’. We make the case that ethnicity is a major factor in the long term disadvantage gap, in particular white working class girls and boys. These issues are highly concentrated in left behind towns and the most deprived communities across the North of England. In the submission, we recommend strong actions for Government in particular: o New smart Opportunity Areas across the North of England. o An Emergency Pupil Premium distribution arrangement for 2020-21, including reform to better tackle long-term disadvantage. o A Catch-up Premium for the return to school. o Support to Northern Universities to provide additional temporary capacity for tutoring, including a key role for recent graduates and students to take part in accredited training. About the Organisations in our consortium SHINE (Support and Help IN Education) are a charity based in Leeds that help to raise the attainment of disadvantaged children across the Northern Powerhouse. Trustees include Lord Jim O’Neill, also a co-founder of SHINE, and Raksha Pattni. The Northern Powerhouse Partnership’s Education Committee works as part of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership (NPP) focusing on the Education and Skills agenda in the North of England.

  • Application for the Newcastle Schools 16 to 19 Bursary Fund 2011/2012
16 to 19 Bursary Fund 2020/21 for North Tyneside Schools Application form and guidance If you are starting Year 12, 13 or 14 at a North Tyneside school in September 2020, you might be entitled to a bursary to help with costs during term time. Read inside for details. Please note that we can provide information in other formats such as large print or Braille. 1. What is the 16 to 19 School Bursary Fund? The 16 to 19 Bursary Fund provides financial help to young people aged 16 to 19 who face financial barriers to participating in education or training, provided they meet agreed standards of attendance, behaviour and progress. In North Tyneside, all secondary schools with a sixth form have agreed a joint scheme called the 16 to 19 Bursary Fund for North Tyneside Schools’. The scheme is being administered on behalf of schools by North Tyneside Council and is dependent on funding received from the Government. Other post-16 providers in North Tyneside and the surrounding area are operating their own bursary schemes and will be able to give you further information on their arrangements. Receipt of bursary funding does not affect other means-tested benefits paid to families. 2. Who is eligible for the bursary scheme? To be eligible, you must: • Attend a participating school/Local Authority provider in North Tyneside which is part of the scheme (see page 3 for a list) • Be starting Year 12, 13 or 14 in September 2020 • Be aged between 16 and 18 on 31 August 2020 In addition, there are eligibility criteria for the different levels of bursary available.

  • Gateshead Autism Services Directory 2016 for Children and Families
Gateshead Autism Services Directory 2016 for Children and Families 1 Introduction This directory provides useful information about services within Gateshead and the surrounding areas for people with Autism Spectrum Condition and their families. A range of services are included, some of which are autism specific, while others cater for a wider group of people. For those services which are autism specific, we’ve indicated this alongside the service information. Due to the nature of autism as a spectrum condition, the services listed in this directory will not be relevant for everyone. Therefore, eligibility criteria and referral details have been included where appropriate as well as contact details in order for you to seek further information. We recognise that individuals will have personal preferences with regards to the terminology used for example; person with autism, autistic, autism spectrum disorder, autism spectrum condition etc. We have used the terminology as used by specific services when referencing them and elsewhere use person with autism and autism spectrum condition. Gateshead Autism Steering Group The Gateshead Autism Steering group is working to implement an Autism Strategy. Consultation with parents and families has told us that they want clearer information about the services and support that might be available to them. Part of the response to this feedback has been to create this directory. Another important aspect has been the development of the Autism Information Hub. Autism Information Hub The Autism Information Hub is located at Gateshead Central Library and offers resources about autism and a monthly face-to-face information and signposting service to people with autism, their families/carers and practitioners.

School report Inspection of Excelsior Academy Denton Road, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne and Wear NE15 6AF Inspection dates: 10–11 March 2020 Overall effectiveness Requires improvement The quality of education Requires improvement Behaviour and attitudes Good Personal development Good Leadership and management Good Early years provision Requires improvement Sixth-form provision Good Previous inspection grade Requires improvement What is it like to attend this school? Excelsior Academy is a unique and complex school. It caters for primary and secondary-aged pupils from a deprived multi-cultural community. Around half of pupils speak English as an additional language. Pupils speak over 40 different languages. Many pupils join or leave the school during the school year. Pupils do not do well enough in their studies. Early years education is not providing a good enough start. Standards of reading are too low at the end of the primary phase. In the secondary phase, pupils have made poor progress in recent years. Not enough pupils gain the qualifications they need to get on in life. However, leaders are addressing these problems. Teaching is improving, and the curriculum is becoming more ambitious. Different cultures integrate happily. The staff work hard to build up positive and trusting relationships. The vast majority of pupils behave well and conduct themselves sensibly. Inevitably, a few pupils find it difficult to integrate and abide by the rules. Leaders do all they can to keep these pupils in education. The school does much to support pupils’ personal and social development. Sometimes, pupils fall out with one another. However, there is little bullying.
