Town Yard Sale - Oct. 4, 8:00 - 1:00 It’s that time of the year again. Time to clean out those attics, basements, garages and closets! Bring everything over to the academy grounds and set up. Tables will be provided. Great location! See you there. Rain date is October 11 Bypass in the News An article in the August 12th Baltimore Sun by William Rasmussen featured the trials and tribulations of getting bypasses built in two of Maryland’s small towns both seriously troubled by the State highways that carry ever-increasing traffic “just passing through” but leaving grime, noise, and constant safety issues behind. Rasmussen, a summer intern at the Sun and a student at Harvard, was shown the Town’s Bypass lobbying video from 1989 to help him get a feel for the issue before he interviewed a number of town residents. Schoolhouse Restoration Moving Along The incessant rainy weather this spring and into the summer has delayed the installation of a roof for the schoolhouse. The roofer is expected to begin work within the next week or two. In the meantime, much progress has been made. The windows have been completed and delivered but will await installation until the roof is finished. Wooden ventilation louvers have been installed at either end of the building. The doors have been refurbished. Walter Blank, the principal carpenter on the job, has been providing stellar service to the school’s restoration. History Tour Includes Brookeville Jeanette Stabler organized and led a “history tour” of Montgomery County sites for about thirty members of the Rossmoor Kiwanis Club. The tour began in Brookeville at the Brookeville Academy where Rick Allan greeted the group and provided them with an overview of the Town’s history and details on the restoration of the Academy. The group then was welcomed at the Madison House where Diane Allan acted as tour guide and recreated the setting when President James Madison arrived at Brookeville Postmaster Caleb Bentley’s House on the evening of August 26, 1814, having fled the British troops as they burned down the White house during the War of 1812. The President stayed the night issuing and receiving dispatches with his senior aides. Madison left the next day with Secretary of War James Monroe and Attorney General Richard Rush and a detachment of dragoons. Bentley’s house later became known as the Madison House. Bordly Drive Progress Progress continues to be made on the extension of Bordly Drive to Georgia Avenue north of town. When open early next year, we should notice some reduction in east-west through traffic in town. Bypass Action Needed (rerun from last newsletter) Governor Ehrlich's veto of legislation that would have allowed Montgomery County to use a surcharge on car registration in order to make it possible for the County to move forward with essential road and transportation projects also means trouble for the Bypass. The County had been willing to fund design and engineering work on the Bypass - normally done by the State Highway Administration, to keep it moving forward toward future construction funding. Because of SHA cutbacks that funding had been in jeopardy until the County stepped in. Now that the revenue the County was counting on to pay for this work has disappeared, the Bypass may once more be put on ice though the gridlock will continue to get worse. If you want to do something about this unacceptable situation, we urge you to write to the Governor and the Secretary of Transportation to make your views known. "Here all seems security and peace!": How Brookeville, Maryland Became United States Capital for a Day Abstract When the British burned Washington D.C. during the War of 1812, the city’s civilians and officials fledo t the surrounding countryside to escape the carnage. Fearful that the attack on the Capital could eventually spell defeat and worried for their city, these refugees took shelter in the homes and fields of Brookeville, Maryland, a small, Quaker mill town on the outskirts of Washington. These pacifist esidentsr of Brookeville hosted what could have been thousands of Washingtonians in the days following the attack, ensuring the safety of not only the people of Washington, but of President Madison himself. As hosts to the President, the home of a prominent couple stood in for the President’s House, and as the effective center of command for the government, the town was crowned Capital of the United States for a day.

PATUXENT HISTORIC DISTRICTS SANDY SPRING HISTORIC DISTRICT (1753+) 28/11 One of the oldest settlements in the county, Sandy Spring was not a for- mally platted village, but was rather a kinship community that evolved over time. Founding families were relations of Richard Snowden, Quaker developer and land speculator. In 1715 he patented Snowden’s Manor, and in 1743 Snowden’s Manor Enlarged which included the Olney-Sandy Spring area. His daughters Deborah and Elizabeth married James Brooke and John Thomas, respectively, and built houses in what became Sandy Spring, in 1728. The settlement took its name from the Sandy Spring, a water source that bub- bled up through a patch of white sand. The Brooke and Thomas families were founders of the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting in 1753. The Meeting o Williams, M-NCPPC, 1999 House served as the spiritual center for othr the community. While most other early Kimberly Pr communities grew around a commer- Sandy Spring Meeting House (1817) cial core, Sandy Spring evolved from the Meeting House. With the for- mal organization of the Friends Meeting, a frame structure was built in 1753. The Sandy Spring Meeting House, the third on the site, is a brick building, built in 1817. Typical of Quaker meeting houses, the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting House has a rectangular form with two front entrances, is simple in design, yet made of high quality materials.     Northern Virginia in the War of 1812 BY SHERMAN w PRATT Almost all Americans, by the time they pass through high school, know that in the War of 1812 the British entered and burned Washington, the National Capital. War with Great Britain had been declared on June 18, 1812. Most of the early confrontations with the British were not very con­ clusive and were concentrated on or around the Great Lakes or involved isolated clashes at sea between naval ships of the two countries. With Brit­ ish victories over their French adversary in Europe in 1813 and early 1814, especially in the Peninsula campaign, sizeable British land and sea forces were then available for use against the Americans in the New World, where­ upon they changed the emphasis of their military operations in America from mainly sea and Great Lakes efforts to joint sea/land operations. In August of 1814 British naval forces in America under the command of Rear Admiral Sir George Cockburn were joined by a fleet under the com­ mand of Vice Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane with several thousand troops under the command of General Robert Ross. The combined forces, under the overall command of Admiral Cochrane, were assembled in the Chesa­ peake Bay by August 15th. 1 The British flotilla sailed up the Patuxent River to the town of Benedict, Maryland, about thirty miles southeast of Washington, which was as far upriver as the larger ships could go. Smaller draft vessels sailed further up the river in pursuit of Joshua Barney, newly bestowed with the rank of commodore, with his barge-gunboats that were blockaded by the arrival of the British.

    Written by Mark Walston August 2020 A History of the Sandy Spring Museum Property The Native American Presence More than 10,000 years ago, nomadic bands of Native Americans, following big game herds across the Alleghenies, found in the Patuxent River watershed a vibrant ecosystem that provided boundless sustenance. Old growth forests thick with all manner of animals -- deer, bear, fox, otter, beaver – covered the gently rolling hills. Water teemed with fish. Groves of fruit and nut trees spread in the dales. Those early Native Americans made the river and its tributaries their hunting and gathering grounds. They tracked game through the woods of Sandy Spring, following centuries-old game trails. Their footpaths became trade routes among the various area tribes, including a broad trail running along Parr’s Ridge, from the Patuxent westward and through the museum property -- the beginning of Route 108. The early Native American presence in Sandy Spring finds reflection in a Clovis point, a stone spearhead nearly 9,000 years old found on the “Bloomfield” farm on Bentley Road – a section of which is now the museum property. J. Thomas Scharf, in his 1876 History of Western Maryland, noted that “arrow heads and a few rude culinary utensils have been turned up in the fields” of Sandy Spring. By 1000 AD, tribes of Native Americans had settled into small agricultural villages dotting the Patuxent River, from the Bay northward, distinguished by “long houses” or large communal dwellings set beside small fields growing foods indigenous to the New World. Maize (American corn) was grown among beans (primarily Lima beans) and cooked together in a dish that, in the Native American Algonquin language, was called “succotash.” Early explorers noted the existence of “a great many Indian Cabins & Tents” in the upper reaches of the Patuxent as late as the 1690s.

    Bloomfleld M:28-63 Montgomery County, Maryland Bloomfield, located on Bentley Road in Sandy Spring, Maryland is a sizeable, five-acre remnant of a substantial 19th-century farm complex. The property includes a two-story, frame dwelling built in three distinct phases beginning circa 1806, a 19th-century brick smokehouse and log spring house, and a more recently constructed frame chicken house. Architecturally, Bloomfield survives as a prime example of the architectural evolution of domestic building in rural 19th-century Montgomery County. Historically, Bloomfield is significant as one of several adjacent properties associated with the locally prominent Bentley family. The Bentleys, who owned and occupied Bloomfield from the early 19th century until 1914, were Quaker farmers, entrepreneurs and active and contributing members of the larger Sandy Spring community. During the Bentley's lengthy period of ownership, the house evolved from a small, room-behind-room structure, to the large, and idiosyncratic, three-part building that it is today. The Madison House sits on an embankment above Market Street, which is the main thoroughfare through the town, designated as the Brookeville Historic District (MHT Site #M23-65, NR #1605705329). GIS Coordinates: 39.182136 N, -77.057443 W Owner: The current owners are Duane and Sandra Heiler. Present Use: The Thomas-Bentley House is now used exclusively as a private residence. Significance: Erected ca. 1798, the Thomas-Bentley House was the first substantial and enduring structure to be built in what would soon become the prominent market town of Brookeville, founded at about the same time by Richard Thomas, Jr. and his wife Deborah Brooke Thomas. Richard is believed to have constructed the Thomas-Bentley House, from which was operated the first store and post office in town. The house was situated adjacent to his preexisting gristmill property. Its construction along the Reedy Branch of the Hawlings River foretold of the growing prosperity of the greater Sandy Spring Quaker community and of the movement from a predominately agrarian economy to one enhanced by light industrial and commercial development. The town site was situated in one of most flourishing agricultural areas in Montgomery County, and generations of agricultural improvements now combined with an increase in industrialization and consumerism indicative of the period to reshape the existing landscape. In fact, within a broader context, the establishment of Brookeville as a commercial/artisan village was part of a social and economic transformation that occurred nationwide during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

    U.S. Capital for a Day Sandra Heiler On Saturday, August 20, 1814, Secretary of State James Monroe (or Colonel Monroe as he was known), from a vantage point near the Patuxent River, observed a large number of British troops landing at Benedict, Maryland. Not having a spyglass, he was unable to estimate the size of the enemy force. But by the next day he had seen enough to write to President Madison, "...The enemy are in full march for Washington. Have the materials prepared to destroy the bridges...You had better remove the records." [1] Thus began a week when Washington would descend into pandemonium, its citizens fleeing in panic; the White House, the Capitol and the rest of the public buildings in the city would be burnt; the President would be on the run, the army routed in a battle and left in disarray; and Brookeville, Maryland, would become known at the United States Capital for a Day. Sunday, August 21, 1814 On Sunday, word that the enemy was on the march toward the capital had spread throughout Washington and Georgetown. Although no executive order had been given, most of the population (at least the part of the population with the means to do so--with a horse and coach or wagon) prepared to leave. The Baltimore Patriot described the scene: “On Sunday, the public offices were all engaged in packing up their books and citizens their furniture. Citizens were absent or under arms. Business was suspended. Cook President Editor Vol. 33, No. 3 August 1990 THE TALE OF TRIADELPHIA, THE TOWN BENEATH THE LAKE By Mary Charlotte Crook On the Patuxent River in Northeastern Montgomery County there was, for a brief period in the nineteenth century, a thriving industrial town called Triadelphia. The waters of the Patuxent River powered its cotton, grist and saw mills. Later those same waters at flood stage caused such wide-spread damage that the town was eventually abandoned. Today the waters of the Triadelphia Reservoir which cover its ruins have effectively washed away even the memories of the little town. Triadelphia, which means three brothers, was founded by three men who were not actually brothers but were, in fact, brothers-in-law. These men, Caleb Bentley, Isaac Briggs and Thomas Moore, had each married a daughter of Roger Brooke, IV, and his wife Mary Matthews. All three men were Quakers, and all three possessed exceptional talent as engineers and artisans. Caleb Bentley was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1762,1 the son of Joseph and Mary Thatcher Bentley. Caleb and his brother Eli were clock makers and silversmiths by trade. After plying his trade in York, Pennsylvania, Caleb moved to Leesburg, Virginia, where he formed a partnership with Mordecai Miller in the design of silverware. A short time later he moved again, this time to Sandy Spring, Maryland, where he married Sarah Brooke on April 20, 1791. Sarah died without issue on July 18, 1806.

The west wing is 2! stories . A square brick watertable unites the whole house . Major restoration was done in 1958. A bankea~! story stone house stands to the east of the main house. 10 . Significance : The Madison house is a fine example of the early Federal period architecture. Its owners include members of several families known for their roles in early County history. Additionally it was the refuge of the fourth president of the United States, James Madison, for three days in August 1814, when British forces burned public buildings in Washington.
