British Men Say 'No' to Posh Spice on a Desert Island with Them British Men say ‘No’ to Posh Spice on a desert island with them Submitted by: EasyDate Tuesday, 23 June 2009 Less than 3% of British men would escape with Posh Spice to a desert island this summer. The results of a recent survey conducted by casual dating site (http://www.benaughty.com), www.benaughty.com, revealed the celebrities us Brits would like to spend summer 2009 with, on a desert island. All British men who took part in the survey, regardless of their age, selected Victoria Beckham as their least favourite celebrity when given a choice of six that included Jordan (Katie Price), Kate Moss, Siena Miller, Cheryl Cole and Alesha Dixon. Footballer’s wife, Cheryl Cole emerged as favourite female celebrity across responses from men aged 18 to 46 and over, whilst Simon Cowell received the most votes from female respondents on the same category, taking the first prize from Declan Donnelly, from famous comedy act ‘Ant & Dec’. Anthony McPartlin, ‘Ant’, received the lowest number of votes from female respondents on the same category where his comedy partner was second runner up. Dermot O’Leary was women’s preferred choice, with over 30% of votes, on the category of Radio and TV presenters, where less than 5% of female voters chose Chris Evans. The same category saw ‘Dancing on Ice’ presenter Holly Willoughby being voted as the men’s favourite with just over 24% of the vote, while Natasha Kaplinsky took second place with nearly 22% of the male vote. Scotland-born actor, Ewan McGregor, received more than 30% of the female vote on the famous actor category, stealing the top spot from the star of Casino Royal, Daniel Craig, who enjoyed less than 27% of the women’s vote. Keira Knightley was men’s favourite actress with nearly 36% of the overall male vote, however, Kate Winslet was favoured by voters in Edinburgh, where the majority of respondents chose her over Keira Knightley. In contrast, the most votes from men aged 46 and over were given to Helen Mirren. More than 40% of British men would spend the summer with Lily Allen, who was competing against Leona Lewis, Duffy, KT Tunstall, Alexandra Burke and Natasha Bedingfield, in the singers’ category. Nearly 27% of British female voters preferred James Morrison, followed by Lemar in second place with over 20% of the vote. The poll collected opinions from a total of nearly eight thousand people, a mix of male and female respondents between the ages of 18 and 46 plus. Each gender was given six answer options on each of four categories: famous actors and actresses, radio and TV presenters, singers and well-known celebrities; all British. • Talent Tracking
ON SCREEN AND ON AIR TALENT AN ASSESSMENT OF THE BBC’S APPROACH AND IMPACT A REPORT FOR THE BBC TRUST APPENDIX II – TALENT TRACKING BY OLIVER & OHLBAUM ASSOCIATES APRIL 2008 1 APPENDIX II – TALENT TRACKING The objective was to find how the sources of the various network broadcasters’ talent differ, by genre and in some cases over time. Presenter loyalty to broadcasters would also be shown as a result of the ‘talent tracking’. A BARB database consisting of every strand aired on BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, C4 and Five in 2007 was used to select the relevant strands. Strands with less than 300 annual broadcast hours were not considered for analysis. Strands were chosen from genres that have a strong dependence on the quality and audience appeal of their presenter or lead performer. Hence the genres chosen were: • Entertainment, consisting of sub genres ‘Chat Shows’, ‘Quiz/Game Shows’, ‘Family Shows’ and ‘Panel Shows’ • Factual Documentary, consisting of sub genres ‘History’, ‘Human Interest’, ‘Natural History’, ‘Science/ Medical’ • Lifestyle, consisting of sub genres ‘Cooking’, ‘DIY’ and ‘Homes’ • Comedy, consisting of sub genres ‘Situation Comedy’ and ‘Other Comedy’ The talent analysis would then be taken form these selected strands. In the cases where talent appeared for the same channel on more than one strand, the talent was still only considered once for tracking analysis. If talent appeared on more than one channel, then their tracking would appear in all relevant channel profiles. Various different web-based sources were used to best map out the talent’s career. www.wikipedia.org and www.tv.com have career résumés on most of the selected talent; for a deeper and more comprehensive analysis, www.imdb.com and www.spotlight.com were used as reliable programme and talent databases.

  • A Case Study of Celebrity Chef Gennaro ‘Gino’ D’Acampo
Wall, G 2018 Putting the Accent on Authenticity: A Case Study of Celebrity Chef Gennaro ‘Gino’ D’Acampo. Modern Languages Open, 2018(1): 7, pp. 1–15, DOI: https://doi.org/10.3828/mlo.v0i0.161 ARTICLE Putting the Accent on Authenticity: A Case Study of Celebrity Chef Gennaro ‘Gino’ D’Acampo Georgia Wall University of Warwick, UK [email protected] This article offers an analysis of one of the most recognised representations of ‘Italian-ness’ in the form of the positioning of television chef Gino D’Acampo, with a view to demonstrating the implications of the functions of the stereotype from a methodological perspective, and raising practical questions about the ideals, prejudices and anxieties of contemporary British society. The first part of the article illustrates the ways in which D’Acampo’s commercial and popular success is related to the projected image of his Italian identity. Providing a considera- tion of the limited and largely condescending treatment of his figure in Italian press, the essay suggests that he is literally ‘made in Britain’, and maps out the construction of his Italian-ness via a brief analysis of his media persona, output and relevant British press archive. The article explores the ‘performance/ivity’ of D’Acampo’s Italian-ness, illustrating the insights to be gained from focussing on use-value, particularly in generating alternative readings of gender, femininity and domesticity. D’Acampo’s negotiation of stereotyped images of the ‘Italian mother’ and ‘mammoni’ promotes recognition of how understandings of femininity are both class and nationality biased. The final part of the article returns to exchange- value, and the meaning of stereotypes as a reader-specific projection; a property of the subject-classifier, rather than object-classified.
