03:45 Fokus Europa - Länder, Menschen, Schicksale 04:15 Euromaxx - Leben und Kultur in Europa 04:45 Kulturzeit - Feuilleton im Fernsehen 05:15 DokFilm Egon Schiele 06:00 DW News - News 06:30 Made in Germany - Your Business Magazine DW Deutsch+ | THU 2018-11-01 3/94 07:00 DW News - News 07:30 Tomorrow Today - The Science Magazine 08:00 DW News - News 08:30 Conflict Zone - Confronting the Powerful 09:00 DW News - News 09:15 DocFilm 1648 - The Long Road to Peace - How the 30 Years’ War was Ended - Part 2 Huge battles, famines, the plague and cholera: For 30 years, brutal soldiers and marauding mercenaries turned Central Europe into the first circle of hell as Catholics and Protestants struggled for hegemony. Almost all the European powers had a hand in the bloody conflict, which was finally ended by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. The first great pan-European conflagration was all about power and religion. About four million people died between 1618 and 1648 in the "German lands” alone. Most of the fighting took place in the territories of the "Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.” The warring factions agreed on two places for peace negotiations: the first international congress took place in the cities of Münster and Osnabrück in western Germany and lasted five years. Both places become a hotbed of intrigue, secret treaties and shady deals as the envoys negotiated the future of Europe on behalf of their rulers. In fact, the Peace of Westphalia really marked the birth of modern diplomacy. A blend of reenactments, animations, archival research and expert opinion brings the negotiations 370 years ago to life in an exciting two-part documentary and shows how touch-and-go the outcome was right up to the very last moment. • “They Shall Not Pass!” Fortifications, from the Séré De Rivières System to the Maginot Line
VERDUN MEMORIAL - BATTLEFIELD Press release April 2021 Temporary exhibition 3 June 2021 – 17 December 2021 “THEY SHALL NOT PASS!” FORTIFICATIONS, FROM THE SÉRÉ DE RIVIÈRES SYSTEM TO THE MAGINOT LINE To accompany the 1940 commemorations, the Verdun Memorial will be presenting an exhibition on the fortifications in northern and eastern France. The soldiers’ experience is at the heart of the visit: “They shall not pass!” The exhibition traces the development of defensive systems along the frontier between France and Germany, which had historically always been an area of combat with shifting borders. Subject to regular attack, the fortifications were modernised to withstand the increasingly powerful means of destruction resulting from rapid advances in artillery. “They shall not pass!” Fortifications, from the Séré de Rivières System to the Maginot Line, will re-evaluate the role of the Maginot Line in the defeat of June 1940, re-examining the view that it was a mistake inevitably leading to defeat, in particular due to a lack of fighting spirit on the part of the French troops. The exhibition aims to explain the Maginot Line by going back in time and seeing it in relation to the different types of fortification that had appeared following France’s defeat in the Franco- Prussian War in 1870. It traces the development of successive defensive systems and the life of their garrisons, from the Séré de Rivières System of the end of the 19th century, via the Verdun fortification during the First World War, to the Maginot Line (1929-1939), the high point of French defensive engineering.

Das Zentrum für internationale Studierende – ZiS – des International Office informiert: UNIVERSITÄT DES SAARLANDES VERDUN – STADTINFORMATION Verdun - medieval German: Wirten, official name before 1970 Verdun-sur- Meuse) is a small city in the Meuse department in Lorraine in north-eastern France. It is a sub-prefecture (arrondissement) of the department. It is the big- gest city in Meuse, although the capital of the department is the slightly small- er city of Bar-le-Duc. Verdun (Latin: Verodunum, meaning "strong fort") was founded by the Gauls (as its Celtic name shows; "Dunum" is the Latinized version of a Celtic word meaning oppidum). It has been the seat of the bishop of Verdun since the 4th century AD, with interruptions. In the Treaty of Verdun in AD 843, the empire of Charlemagne was divided into three parts. The city has been famous for Dragées or sugared almonds from 1200 on- wards; they were distributed at the baptism of French princes. Verdun was part of the middle kingdom of Lotharingia, and in 1374 it became an Imperial Free City of the Holy Roman Empire. The Bishopric of Verdun formed together with Tull (Toul) and Metz the Three Bishoprics, which were annexed by France in 1552 (recognized in 1648 by the Peace of Westphalia). From 1624 to 1636, a large bastioned citadel was constructed on the site of the Abbey of Saint Vanne. In 1670, Vauban visited Verdun and drew up an ambitious scheme to fortify the whole city. Although much of his plan was built in the following decades, some of the elements were not completed until after the Napoleonic Wars.

  • Verdun: the Endless Battle
Verdun: the endless battle Paul Jankowski debates interpretations of what was intended at Verdun, and how the campaign developed. ost can agree that the battle of Verdun started 100 years ago, on 21 February 1916, when the Germans began attacking French positions north and east of the old fortress town on the Meuse river. Few can agree on when Mit ended. The Germans might draw a line under it in the summer, when they halted their offensive operations; the French, in the winter, when they took back most of the ground they had lost, or in August of the following year, when they took back the remaining hilltops; the Americans, when the Armistice the year after that put an end to the local operation they were planning there, in the sector they had recently taken over from the French. But the Germans were still there, a few miles away. Whatever its finis, Verdun was the longest battle of the war, and one of the longest in history, up there with the protracted sieges and chevauchées of earlier centuries, and like them driven by its own infernal logic. The longest, but not quite the bloodiest. It had claimed 300,000 French and German lives by December, somewhat less than the battle of the Somme, called off a month earlier after four months of inconclusive fighting. The war of movement, in August and September 1914, claimed many more French lives than the ten months of Verdun. And yet, outside Britain, Verdun came to enjoy a notoriety all its own, even in Germany, where the Somme offered more to celebrate.

LINGUA ROMANA VOL 13, ISSUE 1 ARTICLE Contemporary Remembrance: The Battle of Verdun in the Public Eye 1916 Clark Hultquist University of Montevallo SUMMARY This study examines the Great War Battle of Verdun in 1916 through the lens of the major illustrated magazine L’Illustration. The historiography of Verdun over the last century has seen differing interpretations that have suited the needs of each new generation. When did this ten-month-long battle become distinctly the struggle of industrialized warfare and symbol of French resistance that we mostly see it as today? A survey of a year’s worth of issues reveals that the main ingredients of how scholars view the battle today were present by April 1916, ten weeks after the fighting on the Verdun front started. The battle then was seen as a difficult and heroic French victory, while today commentators see it as a standoff and a fulcrum for the fortunes of modern France, the moment when the nation began its decline as a great power. KEYWORDS: Verdun, memory, Great War, L’Illustration, La Grande Illusion, General Pétain, Fort Douaumont, François de Tessan, historiography Jean Renoir’s influential film La Grande Illusion is mostly unanchored to the greater chronological construct of the Great War. Most of the film’s scenes take place either in German prisoner-of-war camps or in a peasant farmhouse in the mountains, and the viewer sees no explicit references to the ongoing struggle. However, in the thirtieth minute of the film, Renoir directly shows the viewer that the great fortress of Verdun, Le Douaumont, has just been taken by the German forces.
