The purpose of the course is to reveal the complexity of the Mediterranean metropolis by asking students to create their own archive of maps, narratives, photographs and images, sketches and records, and to write their own stories about the city through their experience and understanding of the city’s places and urban spaces. The course focuses on the Athenian landscape and environs, also on social, cultural and urban fab- ric, in order to reveal boundaries and spaces of crisis, of migration, also of negotiations and coex- istence, as this takes place between the ancient and the new, between the centre and the edges of the city. These will be recorded with various types of media: mapping, photographing, sketch- ing, recording, and narrating- and discussed before each seminar and visit. The aim of the course is to help the students understand the urban characteristics of Athens, its complexity; a complexity woven through the coexistence of liminal spaces. Liminal space will be explored as a passage between two dissimilar situations e.g a public and private, a contemporary and a historic. It is a space that somehow transforms the citizen that passes through it.

    “Trapped” in a new future: Case of Athens, Greece Social and spatial segregation of municipality of Athens and possible solutions Aliona Cerednicenco Urban studies Masters (Two-Years) 30 credits Supervisor Defne Kadioglu Spring Semester 2020 Abstract The mass displacement of people is a global phenomenon, inherent in human nature and the need for survival. Over the last 30 years, Greece became a destination country for different populations. Although the last wave of displacement people, starting from 2015, found Greece in an unstable economic situation due to the economic crisis. Since 2015, Greece has been facing the two types of crises: economic and refugee. The refugee crisis found Greece, like many other EU countries, unprepared for the number of people that they received. From that perspective Greece refugee crisis can be viewed as a crisis of legitimacy and strategies. During the last five years, Greece made significant steps in the regulation of the refugee situation, especially after the EU-Turkey agreement in March 2016, when Greece officially became a country of destination from a transit country. However, the laws and ministerial decisions instead of decreasing the residential segregation led to an increase of social segregation. This paradox can be observed in the case of the Athenian municipality. This paradox defined the starting point of this thesis and aimed for the investigation of spatial and social segregation in the center of Athens. To study this theme qualitative data were collected for analysis, including, semi-structured interviews, analysis of official documents and observation. The funding of this thesis illustrates that Greece never lost its status as a transit country.

    Encyclopedia of Anti-Revisionism On-Line Anti-Revisionism in Greece A Note on ……..1973, The Polytechnic Uprising Given all the heroism shown and courage display that November, the anti-junta student movement remained largely liberal in character, mainly in defence of civil liberties and electoral politics. There is no doubt that the left, the Maoists of OMLE, both Communist parties at that time (the ‘external’ pro-Soviet version and the ‘interior’ Eurocommunist version), were very involved in the anti-junta movement ,but the substance of the resistance was very much in line with liberal values. However the student uprising did demonstrate that anti-regime attitudes, sentiments and behaviour were manifestly growing, not least in the support given by working class activists who made up the majority arrested in the suppression by the military. The Polytechnic Uprising should be seen as the decisive event in the countdown to the collapse of the dictatorship. Early 1973 saw sit-ins at the Law School in Athens in February when the junta overturned the routine military service deferments of 88 students and forcefully inducted them into the army, enraged fellow students, academic staff and supporters - in a move of unprecedented daring at the time - occupied the premises of the Athens University law school to register their protest. The subsequent police intervention to end the demonstration used violence at a level seen as as an example of a state-sanctioned campaign of terror to punish and cow unruly citizens who had defied the regime. The student demands had been for the progressive reforms in the educational system, the restoration of trade union, academic and political liberties.

This topic is a hot one due to the fact that many refuges have arrived in Greece during the previous years and there is a need to remain for a long time. Thus, the provision of housing is imperative. However, due to the economic crisis, the creation of such spaces is expensive and unachievable. As a result, alternatives should be examined. For this purpose, different policies of the smooth integration of refugees and immigrants in European countries can provide such solutions. Three case studies were selected across Europe and they have been compared to the Athenian paradigm. Through this research, proposals about their successful integration have been derived. In that way, it will be possible to provide specific plans that reorganize various areas in Athens in order to make this vision a reality.
