This subtropical wilderness is home to a plentiful flora and fauna. It is known for its rich bird life, particularly large wading birds, such as the roseate spoonbill, wood stork, great blue heron and a variety of egrets. It contains both temperate and tropical plant communities. Each species is an important part of the Everglades ecosystem. The Everglades are made up of complex ecosystems; freshwater swamp, brackish estuaries, and saltwater mangroves. Mangroves flourish in salty environments because they are able to obtain freshwater from saltwater. Some have the ability to block absorption of salt at their roots while others secrete excess salt through their leaves, allowing them to flourish where other trees would die. Mangroves contribute to the overall health of Florida’s southern coastal shoreline and provide a protected habitat for a variety of fish and crustaceans. Mangroves are one of Florida’s true natives and part of the state's heritage.
