PTA SEPTEMBER 2015 Newsflash PTA SEPTEMBER 2015 Newsflash Dear BISI Zek Campus Families, Welcome to the first PTA Newsflash of the 2015/2016 school year. The PTA Newsflash is sent to you as a link in an email by BIS Communications at the beginning of every month and will inform you on and remind you of important dates and upcoming school events. For quick information and advice, you can join our closed Facebook group, Zek Campus PTA and Parents of The British International School Istanbul. The PTA meets the first Monday of every month from 9:00am until 10:00am in the library of the Zek Campus and these monthly meetings are open to all BISI parents. We are always looking for volunteers and new ideas so if you are interested in getting involved, you can attend our meetings or send us an email at [email protected]. Looking forward to see you all on Sunday! SUNDAY SPORT CLUBS (Start 20 September) Starting on Sunday 20 September until June 2016 the PTA offers Sunday Sport Clubs. The sports activities will take place between 9:00am and 1:00pm on Sundays at school. A small fee will be charged for all activities. All information with reference to Sunday Sport Clubs will be done via email. The Sunday Sport Clubs coordinator is Judith Kuiper, [email protected]. Soccer Reception-Y2 10:00am - 11:00am Y3-Y5 11:00am - 12:00am Y6-Secondary 12:00pm - 1:00pm Swimming Beginners 9:00am - 10:00am (2 groups, max 4 children per group) Beginners 10:00am - 11:00am (1 group, max 4 children) Confident swimmers 10:00am - 11:00am (1 group, max 10 children) Dance Pre-teen dance 9:00am - 10:00am (Y4-Y6) Petite 10:00am - 11:00am (EYFS/reception & Y1) Juniors & pre-teen 11:00am - 12:00pm (Y2-Y3 and pre-teen Y4-Y6 in case the first club does not have enough attendants) Tennis 4 clubs will run between 9:00am and 1:00pm, according to age and skill levels. COFFEE MORNING WITH SPEAKER, FRIDAY 2nd OCT 9:00am To kick off our series of Coffee Mornings with Guest Speaker, Paul Pembridge will talk on `How to help your child in Maths (Calculation Policy)`. Location TBC. SUGGESTIONS FOR SPEAKERS The school would like to know which topics you are interested in. Please send your suggestions for a topic or speaker to [email protected]. AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Each term the school will offer after school activities. After the start of each new term you will receive a letter from school informing you on the activities they have on offer for that specific term. After receipt of this letter you return the attached enrolment slip for your child(ren). Information on the after school activities for this term will be send to you soon. There are two kinds of after school activities: - Activities offered and led by teachers from school (free of charge) - Activities offered and led by external parties (charged) Both activities will take place at school. SCHOOL SPORT CLUBS & TOURNAMENTS BISI participates in 2 sport leagues; ISL (Istanbul Sports League) and TISSL. Only the children that get selected for the team after the try-outs can participate. ISL The BISI teams play tournaments and friendly matches against IICS, MEF, Robert College and occasionally Uskedar American. Primary Boys & Girls Swimming, soccer, chess and cross country Middle school Boys & Girls, Y7-Y9 Soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country, table tennis, badminton, swimming, chess Senior school Boys & Girls, Y10-Y13 Soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country, Table tennis, badminton, swimming, chess TISSL In the TISSL League the BISI teams play tournaments and friendly matches against schools from Ankara and Cyprus. Primary Boys & Girls, Y5-Y6 Soccer, basketball and swimming Middle school Boys & Girls, Y7-Y8 Soccer, basketball and swimming Please note that the different sport clubs do not run throughout the whole school year. COBIS This school year the school will again apply for a place. If the BISI gets selected you will receive more information. For more info on the school sport clubs and COBIS you can check the school calendar on the school website or contact Mr Hügel at [email protected]. SECOND HAND UNIFORM SALE Thank you to all the parents who donated and all the parents who bought second hand uniforms at the PTA’s sale last week. Together, we raised 3,350TL which will be added to the PTA’s Wish List Pot. SALE OF UNIFORMS AT ZEKERIYAKOY CAMPUS New uniforms can be bought at the Zekeriyaköy Campus every Friday from 9:00am until 3:00pm. EXTERNAL ACTIVITIES FAIR 2015 At the External Activities Fair, which took place on Friday the 4th of September, 36 external clubs, companies and individuals showcased their services. The aim of the event was to inform parents and teachers on what services are on offer in and around Zekeriyaköy. The feedback on the event was very positive from both the exhibitors and visitors. Attached you will find an extensive list of useful services in Istanbul. PTA e-MARKETPLACE At the end of every Newsflash (starting with the October issue) you will find the PTA e-Marketplace. This section provides you the opportunity to place an ad. Please send your ads for the next issue of this Newsflash to [email protected] by 25 September 2015.     Advancement of the Modern State through Education: Bulgarians at Robert College 1863-1912 Paulin Draganova June 2, 2018 Draganova 2 INTRODUCTION In the struggle of Bulgaria preceding the independence and after, the education Bulgarian students received at Robert College influenced the future direction of Bulgaria as a nation-state. The opportunity that Robert College provided was unique and appealing to Bulgarian students because of the location of the college and the quality of its education. Konstantin Stoilov, Stefan Panaretov, Todor Ivanchov, and Ivan Bagarov exemplify the types of men that graduated Robert College and actively had the opportunity to impact Bulgaria through their careers. Robert College’s qualities as a college that was American and taught curriculum that was American provided the ideas of modernity to their students. Through the use of ethnic identity to group students and the promotion of Bulgarian, the vernacular language for Bulgarian students in an academic and recognized setting, Robert College fostered nationalism that strengthened Bulgaria’s political and social environment to establish an independent democratic, market- oriented, modern nation-state. ROBERT COLLEGE’S IMPACT ON BULGARIA CAME FROM SO MANY BULGARIANS ATTENDING THE COLLEGE When Robert College was founded in 1863, Bulgaria was still part of the Ottoman Empire. Bulgarian students attended it before Bulgaria had gained independence from the Ottoman Empire and in the following years when the Third Bulgarian State was established. Robert College opened in Constantinople at a time when there was no quality education being offered to the Bulgarian subjects of the Ottoman Empire. Robert College provided an education that was located close to the Bulgarian provinces, and the education was at a high level, on par with American colleges at the time.

Zaborowska University of Michigan Abstract Sedat Pakay, whose name will always be associated with the most intimate portray- als we have of James Baldwin, died on 20 August 2016 at his home in Claverack, NY. Sedat was born in Istanbul, Turkey, where he graduated from Robert College. He studied at the Yale School of Art under Walker Evans, Paul Strand, and Herbert Matter and became a successful photo-journalist and filmmaker. His subjects for photographic portraits included Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko, Josef Albers, Gordon Parks, and, especially, James Baldwin. Pakay’s best-known films are Walker Evans/America (2000) and, as all Baldwin scholars and friends know, James Baldwin: From Another Place, filmed in Istanbul in 1970. Norcross Cultural Studies MA Thesis, 2012 Professor Dr. Ay şe Parla ABSTRACT Keywords: Robert College , reputation , education , cultural capital , social capital Robert College, an elite private high school in Istanbul, has become a legend within Turkish society, often being cited as one of the most prestigious, most expensive educational institution in the country. Every year, tens of thousands of Turkish teenagers attempt to enter the school; approximately 200 will be accepted. The present study will examine how the position of incomparability attributed to Robert College is employed by former students as a defense against challenges to both the school itself and their own identity. I will also explore the issue of how Robert College students’ perception of the institutional legacy is internalized as constitutive of their own identity and outwardly represented as a source of social or cultural capital. In order to do so, I will take as a theoretical background the types of capital outlined by Bourdieu and I will use the social interaction analysis of Goffman to examine the way in which the presentation of the school and identity performed by former students during interviews depends on or refers to a shared knowledge/acknowledgement of what alumni consider to be Robert College’s ‘legendary’ reputation.
