1965-Annual-Report.Pdf The Ford Foundation Annual Report 1965 The Ford Foundation is a private, nonprofit institution whose purpose is to serve the public welfare. It seeks to strengthen American society by identifying problems of national importance and by underwriting efforts­ by institutions, talented individuals, and communities-toward their solution. The Foundation grants funds for experimental, demonstration, and developmental programs designed to achieve advances within its fields of interest. The Foundation was established in 1.936 by Henry Ford and Edsel Ford and until 1.950 made grants largely to Michigan charitable and educational institutions. In 1.950 the Foundation became a nationwide philanthropy, and virtually all of its grants have been made since then. Including the fiscal year 1.965, the Foundation has made commitments totaling $2.65 billion, including grants to 5,)52 institutions and organizations. The recipients have been located in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and seventy-seven foreign countries. About 90 per cent of the funds granted by the Foundation have gone to institutions in the United States- principally colleges, universities, schools, and community organizations. The Ford Foundation is independent of other institutions, commercial and noncommercial. It neither controls, nor is controlled by, any business enterprise.     Malaysianisation and the Barlow Boustead Estates Agency Rob Glew and Chander Velu Institute for Manufacturing Department of Engineering University of Cambridge Abstract The Malaysian government’s approach to soft nationalisation through the New Economic Policy did not involve coerced sale of foreign investments in the country. The Government formulated its policy on an ‘expanding cake’ theory, where the prospect of gains from economic growth would be offset by the loss of control by the sale of equity to local and indigenous investors. This study examines the complex corporate divestment undertaken by a major foreign-owned agency house in Malaysia, the Barlow Boustead Estates Agency (BBEA) in response to the New Economic Policy. Documents in the Barlow family archive at the University of Cambridge reveal how the Malaysian government’s policy of reducing foreign ownership in the economy led to competition among foreign investors to retain ownership up to the allowable limits. Such competition created an unattractive environment for foreign capital and eventually led to ‘default nationalisation’. The owners of BBEA were eventually opted to sell to Government-backed institutional investors, although they had no legal obligation to do so.     The Contradictions of the Green Revolution* Will the Green Revolution turn red? That is the big question about the recent and highly publicized upsurge in Third-World food production. Food output is rising, but so is the number of unemployed in countryside and city. Is this growing class of dispossessed going to rise up in socialist revolution? Such is the specter invoked in an increasing number of mass-media news stories. Scholarly studies echo the same fear, and concern is growing among officials at the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations, the World Bank, and the U.S. Agency for International Development (AID). All of these organizations are anxiously trying to buy the answers to these questions. As more and more research money flows out, reams of reports from eager university and field-staff researchers are piling up. Yet for all the vast literature, radical researchers and strategists have paid little heed to the Green Revolution or to its revolutionary potential.1 This is a strange oversight in a generation of radicals more impressed by peasant revolution than by Marx’s vision of revolution by an industrial proletariat. How important is this new development to U.S. foreign policy, that such mighty institutions should be stirred into action? What is the real impact of the Green Revolution on the internal contradictions of modern capitalism? Will social tensions be abated or exacerbated? It is my hope that this essay, which discusses these and related questions, will open a discussion among radicals and move others to probe more deeply into the whole phenomenon. 1.
