CENTENARY OF AMERICAN ARTIST JON SCHUELER (1916-1992) MARKED BY NUMEROUS CELEBRATIONS THROUGHOUT 2016

Solo and group exhibitions, both in the US and in the UK, will mark the centennial of Jon Schueler’s birth. Sabhal Mor Ostaig, the University of the Highlands and Islands, Isle of Skye, Scotland will also be organizing a Jon Schueler conference May 27-29, 2016. o/c 53-2, 1953; Detroit Institute of Arts Museum

Jon Schueler, acclaimed member of the NY School, was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1916. After receiving a BA and MA from the University of Wisconsin at Madison he signed up in the fall of 1941 for the US Army Air Force. As a navigator of B-17s, and stationed in Britain, he flew over France and Germany. Following World War II he attended the California School of Fine Arts from 1948-51, and was part of a vibrant group centered around , , and others. Schueler’s move to in 1951 was encouraged and helped by Clyfford Still. After solo exhibitions at the (1954) and (1957), he spent six months in the North West of Scotland where his work, which had grown away from , became imbued with the force of the weather and the changing skies.

New York became his base once more in 1959 until the end of his life in 1992. These years were punctuated by many further visits to Mallaig, Scotland, which became a o/c 58-58, 1958; Private Collection touchstone for his preoccupation with the power of nature—whether expressed tumultuously or in subtle, hidden forms. Exhibitions throughout the years included a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the group show Landscapes, Interior and Exterior: Avery, Rothko and Schueler at the , and many others in both the US and UK.
