She is also a perfect 8-for-8 on steal attempts after stealing just two bases in 30 games last year. • ESPN.com Preseason All-American (2nd Team) She recently had a career best 12-game hitting streak and overall, she has hit safely in 25 of 30 games this year. • Bank of Hawaii Invitational All-Tournament Last year, the 2007 All-American had to join the Huskies midway through the season in Pac-10 play after sitting Niki Williams out nearly a full year from competition. While she started 0-for-12, the shortstop gradually got her timing back • USA Softball National Player of the Week (3/2) and by the time the Huskies needed her most in the NCAA postseason, she was back displaying the skills that • Husky Softball Classic All-Tournament made her a First Team All-American as a freshman. Salling went into the postseason with a .146 average (7x48) but went on a tear at the NCAA Regionals in Amherst, Mass., leading the team with a .571 average (8x14). She hit Shawna Wright .415 overall in postseason to raise her overall average to .270. • Bank of Hawaii Invitational All-Tournament STARTING TO CLICK Niki Williams came to Washington as a heralded recruit out of California and while it took her a little while to get things going, now that she has she appears to be headed for quite a career. Williams made a name for herself at last year's Women's College World Series, belting three home runs and setting Series records for RBI in a game (7) and series (10) while leading the Huskies to the national championship. But it wasn't always that easy.

GRAND SLAMS Williams went into the World Series a solid .291 but hit just two home runs in 51 games. In the 36 games Danielle Lawrie since the World Series started, Williams has hit 10 home runs and driven in 38 runs, batting .394 (41-for-104). She • vs. Cal State Northridge 2/13 didn't get off to a great start this season, going 0-for-7 over the fi rst couple games, but since then she has hit Jenn Salling safely in 24 of 28 games, including a career-best 12-game hitting streak, during which she hit .541 (20-for-37). With • vs. Notre Dame 2/14 seven home runs so far this season, she has easily surpassed her total from her freshman year in which she hit Taylor Smith fi ve in 57 games. She was named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week after hitting .588 with four home • vs. Purdue (2), 3/21 runs and 11 RBI in the Cathedral City Classic.

BIG SHOES TO FILL MULTI-HOMER GAMES While no one expects Kimi Pohlman to duplicate ' 2009 season, which was one of the greatest in Danielle Lawrie Husky history, the sophomore is fi lling in nicely in the leadoff spot vacated by the three-time All-American. Pohlman • vs. Cal State Northridge, 2/13 had an outstanding freshman campaign, earning Second Team All-Region and All-Pac-10 honors, fi nishing second Danielle Lawrie on the Husky squad with a .360 average, which included a .361 mark in conference games. Pohlman came up big for • vs. Louisiana Lafayette, 3/19 UW in the postseason as well, batting .350, including a .375 mark in the World Series to earn All-Tournament honors. Taylor Smith • vs. Utah, 3/19 Pohlman got off to a slow start to this season but has come on strong lately. After not recording a hit in four straight Taylor Smith games, Pohlman hit safely in 10 of 11, batting .515 (17-33) with 11 runs scored in that stretch. She batted .444 in • vs. Purdue, 3/19 the Bank of Hawaii Invitational to earn a spot on the all-tournament team, then hit .533 (8-for-15) with six runs and three stolen bases in the Husky Softball Classic. Her four triples already rank tied for ninth on the single-season charts - not to mention tied for 11th nationally - and she is 13-for-14 on the base paths, including swiping three NO-HITTERS/PERFECT GAME against Utah two weekends ago. She is now an impressive 33-for-35 in her career on steal attempts.. Danielle Lawrie • vs. Auburn (7-inning perfect game) 2/11 TAKING ONE FOR THE TEAM • vs. Miami OH (7-inning perfect game) 3/11 While Morgan Stuart's stats may not indicate she's off to the best start this season, the junior is fi nding ways to contribute and help her team win games. As always Stuart is leading the team in times hit by a pitch, getting plunked eight times this year. Stuart has now been hit by a pitch 26 times in her career, just three shy of breaking into the NCAA's all-time top-25. Stuart is second on the team in doubles (4) and is third in walks (9) along with playing solid defense at the hot corner. After her average dipped to .236 just over a week ago, Stuart has hit safely in four straight, batting .600 (6x10) to raise her season average to .280.

WRIGHT HITS AT THE RIGHT TIME Freshman Shawna Wright has shown a knack for getting her hits when it means the most. The rookie, who hit a game-winning, pinch-hit home run for her fi rst career hit, has more RBI (26) than hits (25) with her 26 RBI 2010 MISCELLANEOUS STATS tying for third on the team. The more runners are on base, the better Wright gets as she is hitting 276 with the bases empty, .298 with runners on base and .333 with the bases loaded. She is also batting .400 (4-for-10) with a runner on third and less than two outs. She had four RBI and belted her seventh home run of the season in Multi-Hit Games the Judi Garman Classic, showing the freshman is well-adjusted to the college game. LET THERE BE LIGHTS! After spending the fi nal three weeks of the 2009 season on the road during the postseason because Husky Softball Stadium was not equipped with lights, the Huskies were lucky enough to get some generous donations from their supporters to install lights at the fi eld for 2010. The Huskies, who will now be eligible to host postseason games, played the fi rst night game in the 15-year history of Husky Softball Stadium on Thursday, March 11 when they hosted Miami of Ohio in the fi rst game of the Husky Softball Classic. The Huskies didn't disappoint their home crowd as reigning National Player of the Year Danielle Lawrie fi red a perfect game to lead UW to a 3-0 win. All told, UW will play 11 of its 17 home games this year under the lights.

REPEAT? After taking 17 years to win their fi rst title, the Huskies will look to become the fi rst team to win back-to-back titles since Arizona in 2006 and '07 and just the sixth team overall. The Huskies return National Player of the Year Danielle Lawrie, All-American shortstop Jenn Salling and Women's College World Series All-Tournament selections Kimi Pohlman, Morgan Stuart and Niki Williams in hopes of going back-to-back.

The Huskies also fi nished the Pac-10 season with a 14-7 record, fi nishing second to UCLA, their most conference wins and highest fi nish since 2000.

LAWRIE, POHLMAN NAMED POY CANDIDATES Defending Player of the Year Danielle Lawrie and sophomore Kimi Pohlman were two of the 50 players named to the 2010 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year watch list. Lawrie will look to join three-time winner as the only multiple winners of the award. Pohlman, meanwhile, is one of just six sophomores on the list. She was second in the squad last year with a .360 average and went 20-for-21 in steal attempts, also coming on strong at the end of the season, batting .375 in the WCWS.

The ASA will announce the 25 fi nalists on April 7. A player does not have to appear on this initial watch list to be considered as a top 25 fi nalist, however once the top 25 fi nalists are named the winner of the award will come from that list. Freshmen qualify for the top 25 list once they have competed at the collegiate level. Just days before the start of post-season play, a list of 10 fi nalists will be named and released on May 12. The fi nal three fi nalists will be announced May 26 while the winner of the 2010 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced prior to the start of the 2010 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.

HUSKIES PICKED TO WIN PAC-10 The Huskies were picked to fi nish fi rst in the Pac-10 conference in a vote of league coaches, receiving the maximum seven fi rst-place votes. Arizona was picked to fi nish second while UCLA, last year's Pac-10 champ who received the only other fi rst-place vote, fi nished third. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team to win the conference. Arizona State, the 2008 national champion, and Stanford tied for fourth while California, one of fi ve Pac-10 teams with a World Series title, was picked sixth. Oregon and Oregon State rounded out the vote in seventh and eighth, respectively.

UW was picked to fi nish third last year before fi nishing second to UCLA with a 14-7 mark. The Pac-10 has won 22 of the 27 NCAA Division I softball championships, including the last four straight, and will look to add to that mark in 2010.

HUSKIES ON THE AIRWAVES The Huskies will appear on television quite a few times in 2009, with UWTV broadcasting eight games live throughout the year. All games will then be replayed on Fox Sports Northwest, with former Huskies Angie Mentink and Dena Tyson calling the action. Additionally, Fox Sports Net will televise UW's May 7 game in Seattle against Stanford.

UW's fl agship radio station KKNW-1150 AM will also broadcast several games throughout the year. See the full schedule on page one for a complete radio and TV schedule. UW SOFTBALL MARCH 30, 2010
