Tellep turned in an incredible individual performance in the first game of Saturday's (April 13) doubleheader with Harrison Central in a battle of unbeaten OVAC Class 3-A teams, striking out a whopping 37 batters only to suffer a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in on a walk and an error in the bottom of the 14th inning of the first game of the twinbill. That performance, according to records obtained from www.wikipedia.com, is a national high school record for both a 14-inning game and all games under 20 innings. Tellep's 37 breaks the previous mark of 33 in both categories set by U.S. Olympian "Cat" Osterman in 2001 when she had 33 strikeouts at Cypress Springs (Texas) High School in a 14- inning 1-0 victory. As for all-time strikeouts regardless of innings played, Tellep's effort would now rank 15th nationally, with the national record a 61-strikeout, 30-inning performance by Alicia Hollowell of Fairfield (California) High School who went on to be an All-American at the University of Arizona. She's also put her name in the OHSAA record book for strikeouts in an extra inning game where her effort stands fourth all-time. Ironically, the new state standard was established this past Thursday when Wooster's Kasey Kelly fanned 44 batters in a 1-0, 20-inning loss to Lexington. The Lexington pitcher, Holly Tomaszewski, had 32 Ks for a combined total of 76 whiffs. Photo by Jeff Harrison/The Daily Jeffersonian Kelly's effort would now be the state standard, followed by Kristi Goodrich of Warren Lordstown with 42 and Megan Everson of Bristolville Bristol with 39. (The years for the Goodrich and Everson games were not listed in the OHSAA record book). "That game was the most unbelievable thing to be a part of," said Meadowbrook coach Bridget George. "Unfortunately, we were on the losing end but we told the girls they had just been part of something pretty special. "Kinsi was absolutely phenomenal....(Harrison Central pitcher Sara) Pelegreen was amazing," the Lady Colts' coach continued, noting that Tellep struck out 20 of the first 21 batters she faced. "She (Kinsi) had a perfect game until the eight and then to lose the way we did was really tough. Hopefully, our team will learn from that, one little mistake can cost you. Tellep's incredible week continued with a perfect game victory April 17 over Coshocton, in which she surpassed the 1,000 career strikeout mark; another perfect game the following day file:///O:/news/features/Tellep.htm 1/2 8/22/2018 Meadowbrook Ace Mowing Down Opposition against New Philadelphia; then striking out a combined 36 hitters and allowing just six hits in a doubleheader sweep over Martins Ferry the next day.
