8/22/2018 Meadowbrook Ace Mowing Down Opposition Meadowbrook Ace Mowing Down Opposition The Ohio High School Athletic Association Home | Administrator's Corner | Eligibility | Sports | News | Contact Us To More Feature Articles Meadowbrook Ace Mowing Down Opposition By Jeff Harrison, The Daily Jeffersonian BYESVILLE -- By all indications, it appears Meadowbrook High senior softball sensation Kinsi Tellep is now a national record-holder. Tellep turned in an incredible individual performance in the first game of Saturday's (April 13) doubleheader with Harrison Central in a battle of unbeaten OVAC Class 3-A teams, striking out a whopping 37 batters only to suffer a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in on a walk and an error in the bottom of the 14th inning of the first game of the twinbill. That performance, according to records obtained from www.wikipedia.com, is a national high school record for both a 14-inning game and all games under 20 innings. Tellep's 37 breaks the previous mark of 33 in both categories set by U.S. Olympian "Cat" Osterman in 2001 when she had 33 strikeouts at Cypress Springs (Texas) High School in a 14- inning 1-0 victory. As for all-time strikeouts regardless of innings played, Tellep's effort would now rank 15th nationally, with the national record a 61-strikeout, 30-inning performance by Alicia Hollowell of Fairfield (California) High School who went on to be an All-American at the University of Arizona. She's also put her name in the OHSAA record book for strikeouts in an extra inning game where her effort stands fourth all-time.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Nickles as California’s best high school softball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year award announced in June, Nickles joins an elite alumni association of past state award-winners in 12 sports, including Alicia Hollowell (2000-01, Fairfield HS, Calif.), Derek Jeter (1991-92, Kalamazoo HS, Mich.), Candace Parker (2001-02, Naperville Central HS, Ill.), Abby Wambach (1997-98, Our Lady of Mercy, N.Y.), Mark Sanchez (2004-05, Mission Viejo HS, Calif.), Angela Tincher (2002-03, James River HS, Va.) and Kenzie Fowler (2006-07, Canyon del Oro HS, Ariz.). The 5-foot-8 senior right-handed pitcher and shortstop compiled a 20-5 record in the circle along with a 0.63 ERA this past season, leading the Bears (22-7) to the semifinals of the Sac-Joaquin Division I Tournament in the one-loss elimination bracket.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Julie Mason (412-496-3196) GATORADE® NATIONAL SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR: KASEY FAGAN Former NCAA Softball World Series Champion and Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year Alicia Hollowell Surprises Standout with Elite Honor DUNNELLON, Fla. (June 16, 2010) – In its 25th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Kasey Fagan of Dunnellon High School (Dunnellon, Fla.) as its 2009-10 Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year. Fagan was surprised with the news during a team breakfast at Dunnellon High School by three-time World Champion and former NCAA Women’s College World Series MVP Alicia Hollowell, who earned Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year honors in 2001-02. “It felt great to surprise Kasey with the Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year award and welcome her into one of the most prestigious legacy programs in high school sports,” said Hollowell, a member of the 2008 USA Softball Women’s National Team, who holds the University of Arizona Wildcats career record for wins and strikeouts. “Gatorade has been on the sidelines fueling athletic performance for years, so to be recognized by a brand that understands the game and truly helps athletes perform is a huge honor for these kids.” By claiming the 220th National Player of the Year trophy to be awarded in the program’s 25-year history, Fagan joins former SEC Tournament MVP and LSU Tigers pitcher Dani Hofer (2004-05, Palm Harbor University, Palm Harbor) as the only high school athletes from the state of Florida to earn Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year recognition.
