Sánchez, director of the Spanish Colonial Research Center (SCRC), a partnership between the National Park Service and the University of New Mexico, convinced me that I needed to return to graduate school for my doctorate. With the support of Dr. Sánchez, the wonderful faculty of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, especially Dr. Diana Rebolledo and Dr. Anthony Cárdenas, I made the decision to accept the challenge of attending graduate school on a part-time basis while raising a family and working full- time for the SCRC. My rather large dissertation committee reflects the many professional and personal relationships I have developed throughout my many years at UNM. First and foremost, I thank Dr. Miguel López, my committee chair, for taking the time to reassure me throughout this process that, yes, indeed, my research and my work reflected a level of professionalism that meant I was ready to defend my dissertation. I thank Dr. Diana Rebolledo, who has known me since my undergraduate days so many years ago and who has never wavered in her support of my goals. She graciously agreed to serve first on my committee of studies and then on my dissertation committee, even though she was constantly threatening to retire. I am so grateful that I was able to finish my dissertation before she followed through on her threat. I have also worked for many years with Dr. Kathryn McKnight as a graduate student and through my work at the SCRC. I hope she knows that her integrity, her scholarship, and her dedication to her students and their work make her a very special person. Her constructive criticism and revisions, along v with her words of encouragement, have made this a better dissertation. I also thank Dr. Kimberle López for her careful editing of my dissertation. Her suggestions regarding organization and content not only improved my work but have paved the way to hopefully a better publication. I am grateful to Dr. Linda Hall, Department of History, for graciously agreeing to serve as my outside reader. I have known Dr. Hall for several years through my work at the SCRC and appreciate her support. Finally, once more, I thank Dr. Joseph P. Sánchez, who has played several important roles in my life throughout the last twenty-two years. As my employer and mentor, he has afforded me many opportunities to develop and grow in my professional career, first with UNM and now with the National Park Service. As a member of my committee, his knowledge of and insight into Mexican history, from its colonial past to the present, his encouragement and support of my archival research trips, and his suggestions and comments throughout the editing process, have enriched the interdisciplinary aspects of my dissertation. In many ways, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese has been like a home to me since the late 1980s. So many of the people that I met over the years have moved on, as it should be, but I would like to take the time to acknowledge their support. Rosario Johnson, who recently retired, has guided many students, including myself, through the labyrinth of paperwork, contracts, and graduation requirements, and always with a smile. She will be missed. I am also very grateful for the assistance that Martha Hurd has provided me over the years. She always reassured me that she never tired of my endless questions regarding forms, requirements, or professor’s office hours. I’m not sure that I believe her, but her smiles always seemed sincere! vi I met my best friend, María Campos, when we were both undergraduates at UNM majoring in Spanish. Our friendship has evolved and remained strong over the last 20 years, as we both entered graduate school, married, and had children. María has never failed to tell me how proud she is of me, yet, as a Spanish high school teacher for over 17 years, she is the one that deserves all the praise. Gracias, amiga, por todo tu apoyo. I would also like to take this time to thank the many other people at the Spanish Colonial Research Center who have enriched my life with their friendship over so many years. He and his family—my grandparents, many aunts, uncles, and cousins—have served as role models for always striving for excellence and are largely responsible for why I pursued a higher education. Without her help, and that of her sister, my nina Paulita, I would not have been able to go on my research and work trips; they were always ready to help my husband with our three children when I wasn’t there. Tixtla, Guerrero, 1834; d. San Remo, Italy, 1893) played a central role in defining the role that the mestizo—and, by force of circumstance, the Indian—would play in the formation of national identity after Mexico’s independence from Spain. This dissertation examines Altamirano’s literary and political works, as well as his personal correspondence, and his experiences as a soldier, educator, and politician, in order to understand how Altamirano, represented as an “indio puro” who underwent the transformation to mestizo, exemplifies the link between Mexico’s colonial past and its struggle to define its national identity.

Reviewed by Gilbert Harman, Princeton University Here are seven essays that describe and deplore a philosophical double standard that respects the methods and results of physics, chemistry, and biology but not the methods and results of linguistics and other sciences of the mind. One sign of the double standard is that, while hardly anyone thinks one can do philosophy of physics without knowing physics, it is all too common for to think one can do philosophy of language without knowing linguistics. Chomsky is, of course, the leading figure in contemporary linguistics. Starting in the 1950s, his development of generative grammar was an important factor in the shift from behavioristic to cognitive approaches to language and mind. Chomsky's approach takes the goal of linguistics to be to characterize the human faculty of language, noting its differences from the human faculties for general problem solving science. As Chomsky and other linguists tried to give explicit characterizations of the competence of a speaker of a language like English, it became clear that a child learning language simply does not have the sort of evidence available that would enable it to learn the relevant principles from scratch. There is a "poverty of the stimulus." The child must be prepared to acquire language with these principles in a way that it is not prepared to acquire the principles of, say, physics or quantification theory. It is clear that normal children acquire a language that reflects their particular linguistic environment.

  • Performing the Mexican Revolution in Neoliberal Times
    ABSTRACT Since the time of the Mexican Revolution of 1910, images associated with this nation-defining event have been presented in an array of media and cultural productions. Within the past two decades these images have been re-imagined, re-coded and re/de- constructed in reaction to social and cultural changes associated with a crisis of political legitimation and the demise of hegemonic revolutionary ideology, as espoused by the long-ruling Party of the Institionalized Revolution (PRI), amid the generalized implementation of neoliberal policies in the county. My dissertation argues that the ascendance of neoliberalism, with the opening of Mexican economic and political systems, has resulted in changes in the socio-cultural work performed by the Revolution- Nation-Gender triad. This trinity, solidified in the post-Revolutionary national imaginary, weaves the three notions together such that as hegemonic discourses of Revolutionary nationalism enter in crisis, discourses of gender are also destabilized. The dissertation consists of three main sub-arguments. First, I argue that the discourse(s) surrounding Revolutionary heroes has been integral to the (re)definition of the Mexican nation and that analyzing recodings of this discourse through the example of Emiliano Zapata reveals a destabilization of hegemonic nationalism. These changes have allowed alternatives to surface both in Mexico and across the border as part of a recoded ii transnational Revolutionary nationalism. As cracks opened in the Revolutionary edifice allowing alternatives to emerge, they have also opened space for alternative gender discourses. I next argue that a close analysis of representations of masculine gender roles as manifested in a variety of cultural texts, specifically through Revolutionary icons Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata, reveals a crisis of the macho archetype in the contemporary Mexican nation.

POSTMODERN SOLUTIONS TO MARKET ANARCHIST PROBLEMS by Daniel Pryor1 Proponents of market anarchism should strengthen the case for their doctrine by incorporating some aspects of postmodern philosophy into their arguments. However, certain tenets of postmodern philosophy should be excluded from this enterprise, since they are theoretically false and potentially damaging to market anarchist praxis. In order to advance this thesis, I will first define ‘market anarchism’ and ‘postmodern philosophy’. The term ‘market anarchism’ refers to a diverse tradition within political philosophy that traces its origins to individualist anarchists like Benjamin Tucker and the mutualism of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. Market anarchists are united by the contention that “the legislative, adjudicative, and protective functions unjustly and inefficiently monopolized by the coercive State should be entirely turned over to the voluntary, consensual forces of market society” (Molinari Institute, 2002). However, as this essay will make clear, different strains of market anarchist thought propose divergent visions of a stateless market society, all of which have been subject to criticisms from outside the tradition, as well as more granular criticisms from within. ABSTRACT In this paper I seek to explore what kind of socialist system can best make good on the socialist commitment to equity; democracy and solidarity -- in the wake of the failure of the political-economic systems of the USSR and Eastern Europe. I identify and explore two alternative models of socialism -- market socialism and participatory socialism -- and conclude by endorsing a form of democratic self-managed market socialism. Jntroduction What is socialism really all about? The revolutionary events of 1989 in Eastern Europe, and the enormous changes that have been taking place in the Soviet Union since then, have raised this question with renewed acuity. The idea of socialism developed historically out of opposition to the reality of capitalism.
