These provoke, however, varying reactions among academic psychologists. Empirical studies which test these hypotheses are rare. Rosen, Smith, Huston and Gonzales proposed a cognitive psychological experimental paradigm to investigate the nature of archetypes and the collective unconscious as archetypal (evolutionary) memory. In this article we report the results of a cross-cultural replication of Rosen et al. conducted in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. -

An "Authentic Wholeness" Synthesis of Jungian and Existential Analysis Samuel Minier Wittenberg University Eclectic approaches to psychotherapy often lack cohesion due to the focus on technique and procedure rather than theory and wholeness of both the person and of the therapy. A synthesis of Jungian and existential therapies overcomes this trend by demonstrating how two theories may be meaningfully integrated The consolidation of the shared ideas among these theories reveals a notion of "authentic wholeness' that may be able to stand on its own as a therapeutic objective. Reviews of both analytical and existential psychology are given. Differences between the two are discussed, and possible reconciliation are offered. After noting common elements in these shared approaches to psychotherapy, a hypothetical therapy based in authentic wholeness is explored. PART 1 - PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT CHAPTER 1: PERSONALITY Personality is the sum total of ways in which an individual reacts and interacts with others. Or Personality is generally defined as the deeply ingrained and relatively enduring patterns of thought, feeling and behavior. In fact, when one refers to personality, it generally implies to all what is unique about an individual, the characteristics that makes one stand out in a crowd. Personalities is the sum total of individual’s Psychological traits, characteristics, motives, habits, attitudes, beliefs and outlooks. Personality determinants: Heredity : Heredity refers to those factors that were determined at conception. Physical structure, facial attractiveness, gender, temperament, muscle composition and reflexes, energy level, and biological rhythms are characteristics that are generally considered to be either completely or substantially influenced by who your parents were, that is by their biological, physiological and inherent psychological makeup. Environment : The environmental factors that exert pressures on our personality formation are the culture in which we are raised, our early conditioning, the norms among our family, friends and social groups, and other influences that we experience. The environment to which we are exposed plays a substantial role in shaping our personalities. Situation : A third factor, the situation, influences the effects of heredity and environment on personality. An individual’s personality although generally stable and consistent, does change in different situations. The varying demand of different situation calls forth different aspects of one’s personality. We should not therefore look upon personality patterns in isolation. Self Awareness: Self Awareness knows your motivations; preferences, personality and understanding how these factors influence your judgment, decisions and interactions with other people. -

Slightly at Odds: James Hillman's therapy Gustavo Barcellos Published online on 01 December 2015 www.arquetipica.com.br Slightly at Odds: James Hillman's therapy Gustavo Barcellos In 1987, year that celebrated the 25th anniversary of C. G. Jung’s death, James Hillman presented – in Milan, at the Italian Center of Analytical Psychology – a reflection on the old master, whereby, together with other equally interesting issues, trying at the same time absorb, understand and process it, argued that the therapy that we inherited from Jung, would leave the individual engaged in his daily round “slightly at odds with the daily round, displacing the usual, releasing the captive image and alleviating the suffering of Sophia in the material”.1 The text of this reflection was published in 1988, on the first issue of the now extinct British journal of archetypal psychology and art, Sphinx (edited by Noel Cobb e Eva Loewe), and is fundamental to comprehend how Hillman understood Jung. In my opinion, this image speaks even more precisely about the therapy that Hillman himself left us as his legacy, which was also called “image focused therapy”. Archetypal psychology places us, as patients, and psychology itself as an investigative field, in an essentially critical position, in a slight, albeit constant conflict with all daily things. The expression “slightly” always seemed interesting to me. Undoubtedly, the first aspect of this “James Hillman therapy” is the therapy of ideas. As with many others, James Hillman’s ideas modified my understanding of psy- chology, particularly the practice of psychotherapy. Hillman changed our way of think- ing and moving ahead with Jungian psychology. -
Theory in the Practice of Psychotherapy
CAE Theory in the Practice of Psychotherapy Muay owe, M.. There are striking discrepancies between theory and practice in psychother- apy. The therapist's theoretical assumptions about the nature and origin of emotional illness serve as a blueprint that guides his thinking and actions during psychotherapy. This has always been so, even though "theory" and " therapeutic method" have not always been clearly defined. Primitive medi- cine men who believed that emotional illness was the result of evil spirits had some kind of theoretical notions about the evil spirits that guided their therapeutic method as they attempted to free the person of the spirits. I believe that theory is important now even though it might be difficult to define the specific connections between theory and practice. I have spent almost three decades on clinical research in psychotherapy. A major part of my effort has gone toward clarifying theory and also toward developing therapeutic approaches consistent with the theory. I did this in the belief it would add to knowledge and provide better structure for research. A secondary gain has been an improvement in the predictability and outcome of therapy as the therapeutic method has come into closer proximity with the theory. Here I shall first present ideas about the lack of clarity between theory and practice in all kinds of psychotherapy; in the second section I will deal specifically with family therapy. In discussing my own Family Systems theory, certain parts will be presented almost as previ- ously published (1,2). Other parts will be modified slightly, and some new concepts will be added. -

Lord Raglan in The Hero: A Study in Tradition, Myth, and Drama contends that this archetype is so well defined that the life of the protagonist can be clearly divided into a series of well-marked adventures, which strongly suggest a ritualistic pattern. Raglan finds that traditionally the hero's mother is a virgin, the circumstances of his conception are unusual, and at birth some attempt is made to kill him. He is, however, spirited away and reared by foster parents. We know almost nothing of his childhood, but upon reaching manhood he returns THE HERO to his future kingdom. After a victory over the king or a wild beast, he marries a princess, becomes king, reigns uneventfully, but later loses favor with the gods. He is then driven from the city after which he meets a mysterious death, often at the top of a hill. His body is not buried; but nevertheless, he has one or more holy sepulchers. Characters who exemplify this archetype to a greater or lesser extent are Oedipus, Theseus, Romulus, Perseus, Jason, Dionysos, Joseph, Moses, Elijah, Jesus Christ, Siegfried, Arthur, Robin Hood, Watu Gunung (Javanese), and Llew Llawgyffes (Celtic). Intrapsychic Perspectives on Personality
PSYCHODYNAMIC PERSPECTIVES ON PERSONALITY This educational CAPPE module is part i in section III: Theories of Human Functioning and Spirituality Written by Peter L. VanKatwyk, Ph.D. Introduction Psychodynamic theory goes back more than 100 years and has been a principal influence in the early history of clinical pastoral education (CPE). It is a way of thinking about personality dynamics in interpreting and understanding both the spiritual care-provider and care-receiver. This module will briefly summarize the basic theory and punctuate psychodynamic concepts that have been significant in the study of psychology of religion and theological reflection in the practice of spiritual care and counselling. Psychodynamic theories presently practiced include in historical sequence the following three schools that will be covered in this module: 1. Ego Psychology, following and extending the classic psychoanalytic theory of Freud, with major representatives in Anna Freud, Heinz Hartmann and Erik Erikson. 2. Object Relations Theory, derived from the work of Melanie Klein and members of the “British School,” including those who are prominent in religious studies and the practice of spiritual care: Ronald Fairbairn, Harry Guntrip, and D.W. Winnicott. 3. Self Psychology, modifying psychoanalytic theory with an interpersonal relations focus, originating in Heinz Kohut, systematized and applied for social work and counselling practice by Miriam Elson. In conjunction these psychodynamic theories offer three main perspectives on personality: 1. the human mind harbors conflict – with powerful unconscious forces that are continually thwarted in expressing themselves by a broad range of counteracting psychological processes and defense mechanisms. 2. each person carries an unconscious internalized world of personal relationships – with mental representations that reflect earlier experiences of self and others which often surface as patterns in current relationships and interpersonal problems.
