THIEM, GOFFIN BATTLE WITH SEMI-FINAL SPOT AT STAKE

• The last semi-final spot in the Nitto ATP Finals will be decided on Friday afternoon between No. 4 seed Dominic Thiem and No. 7 David Goffin. No. 6 Grigor Dimitrov has already won Group Pete Sampras and he will look to close out the group unbeaten as he takes on alternate Pablo Carreno Busta in the evening session. The winner of Thiem and Goffin will become the first player from or Belgium to reach the semi-finals in the history of the tournament (since 1970). It will also mark the first time since 2008 there are three players (Dimitrov, Sock) appearing in the semi-finals of the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time. In 2008, Djokovic, Murray and Simon were in the SFs.

• Goffin comes in with a 6-3 FedEx ATP Head2Head record against Thiem and the Belgian has won the past two meetings this season in the 4R at the Australian Open and the 3R at ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo. Both players are 1-1 this week with Goffin beating No. 1 Nadal and losing to Dimitrov. Thiem lost to Dimitrov and came back to beat Carreno Busta, both three-setters.

• In the evening match, Dimitrov and Carreno Busta square off for the fifth time (tied 2-2) with the Spaniard winning the last two meetings, at ATP Masters 1000 Madrid last year and at Roland Garros on June 2. Dimitrov has clinched Group Pete Sampras with wins over Thiem and Goffin. He will play Jack Sock (1-3) in the semi-finals on Saturday. Carreno Busta, who has compiled a career-best season with a 36-25 record, made his London debut on Wednesday and lost to Thiem in three sets.

• In doubles action, four-time champions Bob and Mike Bryan face alternates and Mate Pavic in the first match on. The Bryans are trying to reach their 11th SF in the Nitto ATP Finals (see scenarios below). In the evening match, top seeds Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo, who have already clinched the year-end No. 1 Emirates ATP Doubles Team Ranking on Monday, and a spot in the semi-finals, take on Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares. Kubot/Melo are 2-0 this week and they have a 3-1 head-to-head record against Murray/Soares, who are 1-1 so far in round robin play.

36-YEAR-OLD FEDERER, 20-YEAR-OLD ZVEREV TO RENEW RIVALRY

 World No. 2 Roger Federer and No. 3 Alexander Zverev will bring their budding rivalry to the ATP World Tour’s biggest stage when they meet at the Nitto ATP Finals on Tuesday. Federer is 2-2 against Zverev, including a win in the Halle final and a loss in the ATP Masters 1000 Montreal final this season. No one else has beaten Federer or Zverev in a 2017 final, with the Swiss winning seven titles and the German claiming five. Zverev is one of only four players to defeat Federer this season.

 After Zverev turned 20 on April 20, Federer celebrated the 20th anniversary of his first Emirates ATP Rankings point on September 22. The six-time champion hopes to reach the semi-finals for the 14th time in 15 Nitto ATP Finals appearances. He will do so on Tuesday by beating Zverev in straight sets or with a win over Zverev and a Jack Sock victory over Marin Cilic. Zverev, who is making his Nitto ATP Finals debut, will qualify for the semi-finals with a win over Federer and a Cilic victory over Sock.

 Federer and Zverev will know the outcome of Cilic vs. Sock before they take to the court at 8 pm. The Croat and American are scheduled to play at 2 pm. Sock swept Cilic in two meetings last summer, rallying from two sets down to defeat him in Davis Cup play before beating him in straight sets at the US Open. Cilic is 1-6 at the Nitto ATP Finals, while Sock is seeking his first win in his second match.

 Defending doubles champions Henri Kontinen and John Peers meet 2015 champions Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau in Tuesday’s first match. During the evening session, Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut face Ryan Harrison and Michael Venus with a semi-final spot potentially on the line. Herbert and Mahut will qualify for the semi-finals with a win and a Rojer/Tecau victory. Harrison and Venus will qualify with a win in straight sets or with a win and a Kontinen/Peers victory.

NADAL BEGINS QUEST FOR BIGGEST TITLE MISSING FROM RÉSUMÉ

 Rafael Nadal owns 75 singles championships, including 16 Grand Slams, 30 ATP Masters 1000s and an Olympic gold medal. On November 1 in Paris, the 31-year-old became the oldest year-end No. 1 since the Emirates ATP Rankings were established in 1973. But the four-time year-end No. 1 still has a glaring hole on his Hall-of-Fame résumé. He’s never won the Nitto ATP Finals in seven prior appearances. The Spaniard returns Monday to The O2 in London against No. 7 seed David Goffin.

 The Nitto ATP Finals is held on indoor hard courts, a surface where Nadal has struggled. Nadal’s only indoor hard-court title came 12 years ago at ATP Masters 1000 Madrid, which has since switched surfaces to outdoor clay. Nadal defeated Goffin on the Madrid clay earlier this season, but the Belgian bounced back with consecutive titles at Shenzhen and Tokyo in the fall. Goffin is 20-6 since the US Open, helping him become the first Belgian qualifier in the 48-year history of the Nitto ATP Finals.

 Also making history for his country is No. 6 seed Grigor Dimitrov, who is the first player from Bulgaria to compete in the year-end championships. He meets No. 4 seed Dominic Thiem in the opening match from Group Pete Sampras. All four players in the group have career-high rankings this week (Nadal - No. 1, Thiem - No. 4, Dimitrov - No. 6, Goffin - No. 8). DAY 1, NOVEMBER 12, 2017 – 10 THINGS TO WATCH IN LONDON

1) 48th Finals: London hosts its ninth straight Nitto ATP Finals, trailing only for most all- time (1977-89). Eight countries are represented in the singles field for the second straight year.

2) Rafa, Roger Lead the Way: Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are the Top 2 seeds at the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time since 2010, when Federer beat his rival in the final. They were also the Top 2 seeds in 2006-07 and 2009. Federer leads all players with seven titles in 2017, one more than Nadal. They accounted for all four Grand Slam titles and five of the nine ATP Masters 1000 titles in 2017.

3) Rafa Eyes Maiden Title: Nadal arrives in London after clinching year-end No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings for the fourth time at the Rolex (2008, 2010, 2013, 2017). The Spaniard has qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals in each of the last 13 years. He is making his eighth appearance and has withdrawn five times. Nadal is seeking his first Nitto ATP Finals title after runner-up finishes in 2010 and 2013. Last year, Andy Murray won his first Nitto ATP Finals title in his eighth appearance.

4) Big Four No. 1 Dominance: Year-end No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings has been held by one of four players each of the last 14 years – Nadal, Federer, Murray or Novak Djokovic. Of the 26 men to reach No. 1 during their careers, 14 have won the Nitto ATP Finals. Nadal hopes to join the group.

5) Roger on a Roll: While the 31-year-old Nadal is the oldest year-end No. 1, the 36-year-old Federer is the oldest year-end No. 2. Federer holds Nitto ATP Finals tournament records for the most titles (6), finals (10), appearances (15), victories (52), and prize money ($14,349,000). The Swiss is 49-4 overall and 11-1 against Top 10 players this year, posting the best win percentage in both categories.

6) New Faces in Finals: There are four first-time qualifiers at the Nitto ATP Finals this week: No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev, No. 6 Grigor Dimitrov, No. 7 David Goffin and No. 8 Jack Sock. Goffin was 0-1 as an alternate in 2016. He and Zverev are tied for second with 54 wins on tour this year (Nadal: 67).

7) First-Time Success: Not since Alex Corretja at Hanover in 1998 has a debutant won the Nitto ATP Finals title. John McEnroe (1978 New York City), Guillermo Vilas (1974 ), Ilie Nastase (1971 Paris) and Stan Smith (1970 Tokyo) also did so during the first decade in tournament history.

8) Zverev in Top 3: Zverev, 20, has won five titles this season, including ATP Masters 1000s at Rome and Montreal. He bids to become the youngest player to finish in the Top 3 since Djokovic in 2007.

9) Doubles Field: Marcelo Melo can clinch year-end No. 1 in the individual and team doubles rankings alongside Lukasz Kubot. They’ve won an ATP-best six titles in 2017. Reigning champions Henri Kontinen/John Peers and 2015 champions Jean-Julien Rojer/Horia Tecau are also in the field.

10) Bryans Back: No. 5 seeds Bob and Mike Bryan have qualified for a record 16th Nitto ATP Finals. They have won a record 114 titles, including year-end championships in 2003, 2009, 2013 and 2014.
