  • Hip-Hop, Postmodernism, and African-American Vernaculars
Down at the Cross Roads: Hip-Hop, Postmodernism, and African-American Vernaculars It is sadly ironic that the contemporary discourse which talks the most about heterogeneity, the decentered subject, declaring breakthroughs that allow recognition of otherness, still directs its critical voice primarily to a specialized audience, one that shares a common language rooted in the very master narratives it claims to challenge. If radical postmodernist thinking is to have a transformative impact then a critical break with the notion of "authority" as "mastery over" must not simply be a rhetorical device, it must be reflected in habits of being, including styles of writing as well as chosen subject matter. --bell hooks, "Postmodern Blackness" 1 It's after the end of the world. Don't you know that? -- Sun Ra2 It has become a customary -- and in some cases rather gruelling -- ritual to start any new book with the word "postmodern" in its title with a debate on just what postmodernism is. By the time such a debate is completed, most readers in search of a stimulating and engaging text will have been successfully warded away, leaving the stage clear for the cognoscenti to address each other in the familiar terms of their ongoing arguments among themselves. I would like to begin instead with an opening for readers, starting with a sample of Umberto Eco: "Postmodernism is not a trend to be chronologically defined, but, rather . a way of operating."3 Such a definition, while it by no means encompasses all the arts and practices which set themselves forth -- or are set forth -- as postmodernisms, 1 Postmodern Culture, vol.

  • La Morte Dietro L'angolo. Tupac Shakur, Icona Afroamericana Tra Hip
H-ermes. Journal of Communication H-ermes, J. Comm. 4 (2015), 131-151 ISSN 2284-0753, DOI 10.1285/i22840753n4p131 http://siba-ese.unisalento.it La morte dietro l’angolo. Tupac Shakur, icona afroamericana tra hip hop e cinema Luca Bandirali Death around the corner: Tupac Shakur as afroamerican icon between hip-hop and cinema. The way an artist turns into an icon in the popular music system is allowed by the deep narrative structures detectable in the artist’s biography. The case of Tupac Shakur (1971-1996) as an icon of the afroamerican hip hop subculture of the 90’s exemplifies the process at issue because his biography can be compared to a mitography, as to say that it concides with the archetypal structure of the mono-myth. These structures are strictly connected with the artist’s work as musician, which is often a sort of autobiographical storytelling. Beyond both artistic and biographical profiles of Tupac Shakur there’s a third iconic level: his acting career, which overlaps both life and music, introducing a series of symbolic relations and building a picture of himself. This picture is the main support to the cult icon Tupac Shakur has become.

Wang 00:00:08 Morgan Host And I’m Morgan Rhodes. You’re listening to Heat Rocks. Rhodes 00:00:10 Oliver Host Every episode, we invite a guest to join us to talk about a heat rock: an album that just burns eternally. And today, we have something for the blunted as we dive back to 1991, to talk about the debut, self-titled album by Cypress Hill. 00:00:27 Music Music “Break It Up” from the album Cypress Hill by the band Cypress Hill. Light, multilayered rap. Break it up, Cypress Hill, break it up Cypress, break it up, Cypress Hill Cypress Hill! Break it up Cypress Hill, break it up Cypress, break it up Cypress Hill Cypress Hill! Break it up Cypress Hill, break it up Cypress, break it up Cypress Hill Cypress Hill! [Music continues under the dialogue briefly, then fades out.] 00:00:39 Oliver Host The first time I ever saw Cypress Hill was at my very first hip-hop show, in San Francisco in ’91. Cypress, however, were not the headliners. That would have been the trio of 3rd Bass, then touring behind their radio single, “Pop Goes the Weasel”. Cypress Hill was the opening act, with only a slow-burn B-side, “How I Could Just Kill a Man”, to their name at the time. Of course, a few years later and this would all change.

  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - Anthony's Sex Files "Kerrang!" (N°673 - Juin 1990) - Mick Wall
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Anthony's Sex Files "Kerrang!" (n°673 - Juin 1990) - Mick Wall Who? Red Hot Chili Peppers ... Where? Los Angeles ... When? June 1990, in the first of a series of classic Kerrang! interviews, we rewind seven years to find the RHCP on the verge of conquering the world. Happily, singer Anthony Kiedis is already obsessed with shagging ... Los Angeles, 1990, was the perfect time and place to meet the RHCP. They were the face of the future. That they choose to combine rock and funk was hardly original (Funkadelic, Taling Heads and others had already broken the trail). But the way in which the Chilis did it was. In an era of hair-leased, MTV motivated, money-worshipping mindlessness, the Chilis stood out like a beacon. When they came along, it suddenly seemed there might be more than just shite at the end of the tunnel. The Chilis refused to conform, and actually set themselves as hard against the grain as they could go. Often, that would lead to trouble. But instead of derreting them, the Chili Peppers just seemed inspired by the blustering reactions their then only semi-famous presence could provoke. When they performed live on the Johantan Ross Show a few weeks before, Flea had dangled upside down from a rope throughout the entire performance and Anthony had startled Ross by bouncing over his desk and running amok amongst the audience. In person they were no less mood-enhancing. At the photo session which followed this interview Flea leapt from the third floor balcony and hung from it by his fingerstips when suddenly decided "this is too boring, we need something else".

  • Tupac Biography
Tupac Biography Written by Staff ID17 Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:02 - Last Updated Tuesday, 13 December 2011 09:09 Tupac Biography "A moment of silence, and then it was on!" - 2Pac (Resurrection DVD) An embryo in Prison.Cultivated behind bars. Then on the 16th June 1971, 'Lesane Parish Crooks' was entered into this world. The world will later know this man as 'Tupac Amaru Shakur'; but little did they know the impact that this man would have on this world. Tupac was the son of one of the famous 'Black Panther' members, Afeni Shakur. This was a movement fighting for the prejudice against African Americans. He was from a single parent family as many at the time were and he would from a very early age ask about his father but the reply from Afeni was vague, "She just told me, ''I don''t know who your daddy is.'' It wasn''t like she was a slut or nothin''. It was just some rough times." His step father, Mutulu Shakur was sentenced to sixty years for a fatal armored car robbery. This had a big impact on Tupac's life, he had no father figure that he could look up to; "How can I be a man if there's no role model? Strivin to save my soul I stay cold drinkin a forty bottle",the only role models that he had were pimps and hustlers, and this is where he adopted the thug image. Tupac moved to Baltimore at an early age. He describes these "as the best days of my life".
