The city today is a vibrant, living testimony to this cultural heritage. Our hotel is located right in the historic centre of town, so the vibrancy of this diverse city is all around you. Starting the tour, we first look at a series of sights that provide an insight into both Palermo and Sicily – the Quattro Canti, the Arab-Norman architecture, Palermo fountain Fontana Pretoria, and the exteriors of the Arab- Norman churches of San Cataldo and Martorana. At this point we team up for the afternoon with a specialist expert who has a depth of knowledge about all things Sicily and Palermo. Together we travel a short distance to Monreale, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Monreale is on the outskirts of Palermo, a 30 minute drive. We start by visiting the cathedral at Monreale, with incredible golden mosaics. It is said to be one of the finest Norman buildings in the world. The cloisters at Monreale We go on to visit the cloisters at Monreale, a particularly evocative setting lined with marble columns. You’ll be am azed at the detailed carved marble and inlaid stone. On returning to central Palermo we visit the Oratorio of Santa Cita. In this 'oratorio', a private chapel constructed in the 16th century, you will find sumptuous rococo stucco sculptures decorating the interior.

    Sicilian Landscape as Contested Space in the First Century BC: Three Case Studies Dustin Leigh McKenzie BA (Hons), Dip. Lang. A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2018 School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry ii Abstract Sicily was made the first overseas Roman province between 241 and 212 BC, and became known as the ‘bread-basket’ of the Republic due to the island’s famously fertile farmlands. The island, with its history of pre-Roman conflict, second century slave revolts, and use as a military stronghold in the civil wars of the first century, never dissociated itself from conflict. As such, its construction as a ‘contested space’ was popular in the literature of first-century Rome, employed as a symptomatic topos of the state of Rome – the closer Roman Sicily resembled its pre- annexation state, the greater the perceived threat to the Republic, and vice-versa. This construction of Sicily and its landscape was employed by authors such as Cicero, Diodorus Siculus, and Virgil to great effect, as they engaged with, reinforced, or challenged the major contemporary discourses of imperialism, the impact of civil war, and food security. Cicero’s In Verrem presents its audience with a Sicily that has been purposely constructed to deliver the most damning image of Verres, the infamously corrupt governor of Sicily from 73-71, the most sympathetic and familiar image of the Sicilians, presented as virtuous and stoic farmers, and a Sicily that has been reduced to a war-torn desert under Verres’ rule. Through his construction of Sicily as contested space, Cicero secured his win against Verres in court and demonstrated to his audiences the danger Verres’ actions presented Rome, threatening the stability of the relationship between Sicily and Rome.

Dumbarton Oaks Fieldwork sponsored this project. The materials document in detail mosaics and other architectural aspects from several buildings in Sicily. The collection contains photographic negatives and oversize drawings from Capella Palatina, Cefalù, Martorana, Monreale, and other sites. HISTORICAL NOTE Ernst Kitzinger was born on December 27, 1912 in Munich and died on January 22, 2003 in Poughkeepsie, NY. He received his PhD, summa cum laude, from the University of Munich in 1934 under the direction of Wilhelm Pinder. He completed his dissertation entitled Roman Painting from the early seventh to mid-eight century1 where he discussed the influence of Byzantine art on the early stages of medieval Roman artistic production. In the same year, Kitzinger moved to England, where he worked at the Department of British and Mediaeval Antiques at the British Musum, and in 1937, he published Early Medieval Art at the British Museum.2 He eventually migrated to the United States in 1941, and “he had been created Director of Studies [at Dumbarton Oaks], a post that he held with great distinction from 1955 until 19663. From 1950 to 1951, Kitzinger was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship during his tenure as an Assistant Professor of Byzantine Art and Archaeology at Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection (Dumbarton Oaks).
