    Save Medina Lake committee update with LAMCOS membership January 8, 2018 WHO IS SAVE MEDINA LAKE? 5 years ago, a group of concerned citizens formed the Save Medina Lake committee (SML) as part of Lake Medina Conservation Society. The fundamental question of the committee was: Why was Medina Lake drained from 2007 to 2013, while all comparable lakes in Central Texas were not? Today the SML committee has almost 15,000 followers on Facebook and receives over 100,000 views on many of our posts. We have gathered over 10,500 signatures on a petition supporting our efforts. SML has gained approval as a 501(c)(3) organization. 2 GUIDING PRINCIPLES 1. Save Medina Lake is a data and fact driven organization. Research and data analysis drives all of our work. 2. Save Medina Lake does not challenge the water rights granted to the BMA to divert water for “real” irrigation and municipal purposes. HOWEVER we seek to influence the permit to include : • Water Conservation & Environmental Policies • Consideration of all stakeholders in and around the lake. 3. Surface water in Texas is owned by the state and held in trust for the citizens of the state. It is our democratic right to seek influence over how the water in Medina Lake is managed. 3 PROBLEM STATEMENTS 1. Data analysis proves that the reason Medina Lake was drained in 2013, and not just low as other lakes in the region, is because the valve(s) at Medina Lake were not managed and were left open.     Water-Data Report 2013 08179500 Medina Lake near San Antonio, TX San Antonio Basin Medina Subbasin LOCATION.--Lat 29°32′24″, long 98°56′01″ referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Medina County, TX, Hydrologic Unit 12100302, at gate-operating platform, 576 ft from the left end of Medina Dam on Medina River, 4.2 mi upstream from Medina diversion dam, 13 mi north of Castroville, 28 mi west of San Antonio, and 70.4 mi from mouth. DRAINAGE AREA.--634 mi². SURFACE-WATER RECORDS PERIOD OF RECORD.--May 1913 to Sept. 1994, Aug. 1997 to current year. Prior to Oct. 1965, end of month contents only from records provided by Bexar- Medina-Atascosa Counties Water Control and Improvement District No. 1. PERIOD OF RECORD, Water-Quality.-- CHEMICAL DATA: Oct. 1969 to Sept. 1984. REVISED RECORDS.--WSP 1923: 1953(M), Drainage area. GAGE.--Water-stage recorder. Datum of the gage is NGVD of 1929. Prior to Oct. 1999, datum of gage was 7.81 ft higher. Satellite telemetry at station. REMARKS.--Record is rated good. Some records listed in the "Period of Record" for surface water and water quality may not be available electronically. The lake is formed by a gravity-type concrete dam, 1,580 ft long. The dam was completed and storage began May 7, 1913. The uncontrolled spillway is a cut through natural rock 880 ft long, with a 3-foot wide cutoff wall, located near right end of dam. The dam and lake are owned and operated by Bexar-Medina-Atascosa Counties Water Control and Improvement District No.
