    RENARRATIVISATION OF TOURING IMAGES OF AN EXOTIC LAND When India is celebrating it’s 62 nd anniversary of Independence from the British colonial rule , an exhibition contexualising various selective art objects representing the late eighteenth century to early nineteenth century India, can be legitimately considered as a profound metaphor for changing contours of identity formation. With the collapse of the universal systems of metanarratives , a need for re- narrativization of Indian images – oil paintings of Indian landscapes and Mughal architecture , Portraits of Rajput rulers ,drawings of Hindu architecture, Indian Botanical drawings of a particular era (Georgean age) emerges out of the bottom and slowly floats on the surface to make an urgent impact of a message upon the universal audience. With an accentuated reversal of the decolonization process and a globalizing neo- imperialism, multipleways of looking at the images passed on to us by the past is becoming a necessity for the purpose ofredefining the present which was already codified by the earlier historiography . If we look at the biography of art objects originated in India and collected in a museum elsewhere ,one can realize that they have been relocated and revalorized over time by various communities for various reasons and there by given room for multiple interactions and interpretations in new contexts that Indians never foreseen ever before. I realized this fact personally when I visited for the first time in 1994 as a Research scholar to various British Museums in London ,Oxford and Cambridge . Reconstructing such debate among Company officials and critics from the 1770s to the 1830s, the study makes several further interventions. It argues against what has been perhaps the dominant narrative about Company and British-imperial ideology in this period, a narrative of reorientation from “Orientalist” to “Anglicist” cultural attitudes. It shows instead how the Company shifted from a commercial idiom of sovereignty, concerned with conciliating elites through scholarly patronage, to a territorial idiom, concerned with cultivating popular affection through state-sponsored education.

The rising power of the European empires—and of the British Empire in particular—secured unprecedented levels of trade and exchange. The trade of the European East India companies in South Asia, for example, entailed the exchange of gifts to ease diplomatic and commercial relations. By the last quarter of the eighteenth century portraits had come to dominate such gift relationships. Dozens of portraits of King George III were sent to India in exchange for which local rulers and princes gifted their own oil portraits. This practice necessitated the services of European painters as large- canvas portraits were an artistic genre absent in Indian art. The first of such European artists to reach India was the Englishman Tilly Kettle (1735–86). To him and another dozen European artists we owe not just a remarkable number of state portraits but also more informal and personal portraits of European East India Company servants and their families living in India. These portraits remind us of the importance of individuals’ lives in shaping larger histories of empire and trade.

O’Shea, Chair This dissertation presents a critical examination of dance and multiple movements across the Coromandel in a pivotal period: the long eighteenth century. On the eve of British colonialism, this period was one of profound political and economic shifts; new princely states and ruling elite defined themselves in the wake of Mughal expansion and decline, weakening Nayak states in the south, the emergence of several European trading companies as political stakeholders and a series of fiscal crises. In the midst of this rapidly changing landscape, new performance paradigms emerged defined by hybrid repertoires, focus on structure and contingent relationships to space and place – giving rise to what we understand today as classical south Indian dance. Far from stable or isolated tradition fixed in space and place, I argue that dance as choreographic ii practice, theorization and representation were central to the negotiation of changing geopolitics, urban milieus and individual mobility. This study traces change through intersecting movement of people, ideas and repertoires anchored in specific new and changing urban milieus; developing the concept of performative geographies It unpacks the ways in which multiple stakeholders, themselves often on the move, drew from diverse milieus (performative, geopolitical, temporal and social), connecting through the subcontinent and across the Bay of Bengal.
