2 EDITORIAL

April 2014 Dear readers: We are thinking about Spring, even though we had a little set-back last week with some more snow, but we will have some nice weather soon. As the various clubs are beginning to wind-up their winter activities, there are still many special events going on at the club in April and May: the Annual General Meeting, the Bazaar, Billiard wind-up tournament, Spring Market, Seniors bustrip, and Bloomsday coming up in June. Plenty of reasons to come out and spend some time with us at our facilities. It was great to see many of our members at the Muttart Conservatory for the Touch of Dutch feature pyramid with the tulips displays. It was a nice Sunday afternoon! The tulips will be in bloom and featured until April 6. Thanks Emmy for organizing the “Dutch Day”. I wish all of you a Happy Easter with friends and family and I hope to see many members at our Annual General Meeting on March 28. Jenny Smits - 780-473-0905 - [email protected]

NEWS FROM THE BOARD

SPRING MARKET - MAY 10, 2014 Our Market Coordinator has been busy lining up vendors and organizing this year’s Spring Market and we always need volunteers to help with the set up. We need a crew to set up the new stalls before the event and a crew to clean up after the event as well. But this year we have an extra challenge: we need to get it all cleaned up that same Saturday because the Lynne Singers are setting up on Sunday for the rehearsal of their concert. So extra help would be greatly appreciated. The DCC Auxiliary is going to need volunteers as well to help prepare and sell food from the kitchen and the Holland Snack Bar trailer. We know we can always count on you to help us make this event successful. If you would like to rent a stall to sell your merchandise please contact Barbara de Visser at 780-444-8855 or email her at [email protected].

3 NEWS FROM THE CLUBS

KLAVERJAS CLUB & KLAVERJAS TOURNAMENT We had another successful Klaverjas Tournament; twenty-four players attended on Sunday, March 16. The winners of the tournament were: 1. Martin Wouterse 2. Ria Bok 3. Isabel Van Essen A lot of interest was shown for the booby prize, which was donated by Dick Van Boven. Thanks Dick. Our next tournament will be held on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at 1:30 pm. Mr. Piet Van Papeveld and Mrs. Ria Bok will be running this next tournament because Erica and I will be on holidays. Piet and Ria will also be looking after the Tuesday Klaverjas Club until we return. Please note: the wind-up party for the Klaverjas Club will be on Tuesday, May 13 at 12:00 noon. Piet & Erica van Leeuwen - 780-459-5367 - [email protected]

CARD MAKING CLUB Our dates for card making are March 29, April 12 and 26, 2014. We hope to have a good turn out on March 29. Please keep Linda in your thoughts and prayers, her husband is not doing well. We hope to see her at the next card making day. See you all there. Ria Bok 780 472 2725- [email protected]

SEWING AND CRAFT CIRCLE The new fabric is in and we are working very hard on the new table covers for the market. They look very nice, hopefully we can get quite a few done before May 10. We meet every Tuesday from 10:00 am until about 3:00 pm and everyone is welcome to come out and help us with this huge project. Even if you don’t sew, you can help us out: we need to measure the fabric, then cut it, then assemble it before we can finally start to sew and serge it. Please bring your own lunch; coffee and tea are provided. Jenny Smits - 780-473-0905 - [email protected]

5 NEWS FROM THE CLUBS

STITCH ’N RIP CLUB It seems like I just finished the March news and here we are again with the April newsletter. Time is going too fast. We are busy as always, and a lot of baby blankets have been coming in. We dropped 30 of them off at the Stollery Hospital and they where very happy with them. Thanks to the Stitch ‘N Rip Club! Well done Ladies! Some of us are knitting socks, these are also needed for the homeless. It is nice to be able to help those who need help so it is all for a good cause. I hope winter is over soon, and I am looking forward to summer. We wish all of you a Happy Easter. Edith Van Leeuwen - 780-489-8404 - [email protected]

HERITAGE FESTIVAL 2014 Organizing for the 2014 festival is well underway. We have paid our dues and our application has been approved. We are hoping to streamline some of the volunteer positions this year in an effort to reduce frustration in the kitchen. It’s not too early to begin thinking of your summer plans, and if you are free on the August long weekend, August 2, 3, and 4, we would be happy to have you join us! We are seeking one or two volunteers to take on the role of kitchen supervisor. This individual should have experience working with us in the past and understand the Heritage Festival menu for the Dutch Pavilion, have a sunny disposition and enjoy teaching others. We would also like someone to take on the role of Entertainment Coordinator for the weekend. As you know we share our stage with the Indonesians, and will continue to do so this year. This role will require working closely with the Entertainment Coordinator from the Indonesian Pavilion. Scheduling skills as well as great attitude are all that is required. Please contact Rita Hemmes – Davis at 780-449-1080 or email [email protected] to volunteer for these or any other positions for the Heritage Days Festival. Emmy Diamond 780-433-5584 [email protected]

2014 FIFA World Cup Soccer Brazil - June 12 - July 13 This year the Soccer World Cup will be played in Brazil and the Dutch team is in group B where they have to play against Spain, Chili and Austria. It’s that time of year again – Spring Cleaning!! You’ve cleaned the blinds, washed the windows, dusted everything from baseboards to ceiling fans, cleaned and organized the fridge and pantry, what else is there to do? Here are a few you may not have thought of: - Clean inside garbage and recycle cans with a bleach solution. - Reseal grout lines in floors and countertops. - Rotate mattresses and break out the spring/summer bedding. - Defrost the freezer and dust refrigerator coils. - Clean inside the closets from the shelves on top to the floor below. - Flood proof the basement by moving items onto shelves and off the floor - FORGET ALL THE ABOVE AND LET’S GO GOLFING, ETC. Here’s to working together to build a better Club! Judy Boekholt – 780-467-3701 – [email protected]

10 EPS warns of Canada Revenue Agency scams

14-Mar-2014 @ 11:00 AM MRU #:14R031 With tax season approaching, the Edmonton Police Service is warning citizens to beware of recent scams where fraudulent letters and emails that claim to be from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) are asking for personal information.

All citizens should be aware of these scams and should not provide their personal information. They are designed to steal personal information, which can be used for fraud and identity theft.

The letter states the CRA needs more information like bank account and passport information.

The circulating email says the recipient can claim a tax refund through an online form. It may include a link to a false website asking for sensitive financial information.

“In order to make their claims more believable, the scammers often include seemingly official tax department logos, copyright notices and secondary links that lead to the genuine tax department website,” says Const. Nadine Swist who works in Economic Crimes with the EPS. “Everyone should be vigilant when divulging any confidential information to third parties.”

The Canada Revenue Agency has well established practices to protect the confidentiality of taxpayers’ information and has warnings about such scams on its website.

If you have received a letter or email claiming to be from the CRA, take measures to protect yourself.

If you suspect you may be a victim of this or any type of fraud contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567

14 Are you getting the most out of your income tax return? Diligent receipt collectors and record-keepers may think so, but one expert says many Canadians are missing out on tax deductions we didn’t realize were allowed. Cleo Hamel, a senior tax analyst at H&R Block, told CTV’s Canada AM that a number of common expenses are often overlooked at tax time because few people know they can be claimed. Here are some little-known deductions that might boost your income tax return this year: • Travel medical insurance: Hamel said many Canadians purchase out-of-country medical insurance every year, but never think to claim it. “Don’t throw the receipt out,” she said. But remember that only medical, not trip cancellation, insurance is tax-deductible. • Children’s activities: Many parents are aware of the children’s fitness credit, which allows them to claim expenses related to their kids’ sports activities. But Hamel said there is also a children’s art credit, which may cover tutoring, language and music classes, among other expenses. • Hearing aid batteries: “People have to buy them on a weekly basis sometimes,” Hamel said. “So if you are purchasing them…buy them separately so you have a receipt for them, and claim them as a medical expense.” • Public transit: Monthly transit passes are tax-deductible. Even if you qualify for a subsidy, you can claim the amount you still have to pay out of pocket, Hamel said. • Safety deposit box rental: This likely won’t be an option as of next year, so take advantage of it, Hamel said. “It might be 40, 50 or 60 dollars that you’re able to claim and as far as I’m concerned, every dollar you save counts.” The deadline to file your papers is April 30. 15 Snowbird Taxes: Why do people count the number of days they spend in the South during the winter? The total number of days you spend in the States (including non-consecutive and partial days) is one of the ways the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) uses to determine if you are a resident or a non-resident alien. Each day in the current year counts as a full day, each day in the year before that counts as one- third of a day and each day in the year before that one counts as one-sixth of a day. If the total is at least 183 days, you will generally be considered as a resident alien for the current tax year. You will probably have to file a U.S. tax return and declare income from all sources, including Canadian income. Non-resident aliens are usually taxed only on income from U.S. sources. In general, if you never spend more than 121 days in total in the U.S. during any tax year, you will not be considered a U.S. resident alien. What happens if I buy a winter home in the US? If you have not bought it yet, you will be able to plan for the family tax implications of renting, selling and leaving the property to your family. It is best to do so with a qualified accountant with tax expertise and an experienced estate-planning lawyer. When you sell your second home, you are subject to U.S. income tax on the capital gains. Renting your property while you are back in Canada. If you rent your seasonal residence while you are not using it, the Internal Revenue Service will expect you to pay income tax on the rental income. You will have to apply for an ITIN number (individual taxpayer identification number) from the IRS before you file your taxes. It will take several weeks to get your number. Do I have to pay estate tax on my U.S. property when I pass away? U.S. estate tax is based on the fair market value of the property that is located in the States but your worldwide estate (fair market value of all assets at death, personal or spousal RRSPs, RRIFs, etc.) will be considered when calculating your total estate value and tax owing. Estate tax will not apply if your U.S. assets are under $60,000 and if your worldwide estate is under $2 millions. How do I file my income tax in Canada? When you spend part of the year in the U.S. and you maintain residential ties in Canada, you are considered a factual resident. Simply complete Schedule D on form T1248 and become familiar with these precisions before you file your income tax. I won money from U.S. lottery or gambling. What happens now? First, it is recommended that you keep a detailed diary of your gambling losses and wins as well as all your wagering tickets so you can deduct your losses from your winnings. If the winnings did not come from blackjack, baccarat, craps, roulette and the “Big 6” wheel, they were subject to a 30% tax at the time of the win. You can recover that amount by using your ITIN number and attaching form 1040NR to your U.S. tax return. What documents do I need at the border? Since June 1, 2009, Canadians who fly into the States need a valid passport. Those who enter by land or water may present a passport or an Enhanced Driver’s License or Enhanced Identification Card, available in certain provinces. Frequent travelers may obtain a NEXUS card. As a visitor or tourist, you will probably be issued a B-2 visa, for which you can apply in advance, allowing you to stay a maximum of six months in a calendar year. You will not be able to work and you must keep your primary residence in Canada. Since you will be staying more than 31 days, you will need to prove that you can support yourself and that you plan to return to Canada. Canadian bank statements, notices of assessment, proof that you own your principal residence, and utility bills. Travel insurance indicating a termination date or a return plane ticket can be very helpful. Source: turbotax.intuit.ca

16 TOUCH OF DUTCH AT MUTTART!

Mia We enjoyed a beautiful sunny afternoon with our friends at the Muttart Conservatory. Visitors of all ages were able to experience a little Dutch Culture along with some yummy food samplings. Muttart has indicated that this was one of the most successful launches they have experienced on a feature pyramid. And that was mostly thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers who assisted the Board in organizing and executing this event. A big THANK YOU to all of you! We had a beautiful delegation of ladies and gentlemen in traditional costumes and a very engaging and interactive cultural display! After speaking with the organizers at the Muttart Conservatory, they expressed hope for this to once again become a yearly Partnership with the DCC. This type of exposure is invaluable to our Club as we continue to promote ourselves to the community! Well Done! Emmy Diamond - 780-433-5584 [email protected]

17 BUTTER OR MARGARINE by Diane Britton, Registered Dietician Diane Britton is a registered dietician whose background includes sports nutrition, individual nutrition counselling, workshops and media Whether you choose margarine or butter, use it in moderation. Both are 100% fat and both contain 4 g of fat per teaspoon or 35 calories in each teaspoon (5mL) - about 100 calories in each tablespoon (15 mL). Choosing a spread depends on a person’s medical condition, family history, taste preferences and overall dietary habits. Margarine Margarine is made from vegetable oils and therefore is loaded in good fats (yes, your body does need good fats!), both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated, that help lower bad cholesterol (LDL). Margarine also contains no cholesterol. Many margarines are a source of omega 3 fats, great for heart health and are a source of vitamin D. But not all magarines are equal. Some margarines are made by hydrogenation, a chemical process that turns liquid fat (vegetable oils) into solid fat )spreadable margarine). This process adds trans fats, the worst type of fat for your heart. Trans fats can increase your bad cholesterol (LDL) and decrease your good cholesterol (HDL). Block margarine, or hard stick margarine, contains a large amount of hydrogenated and trans fats. The nurses’ Health Study found that women who used four teaspoons of stick margarine a day had a 50% greater risk of getting heart disease than women who only ate margarine rarely. If margarine is your choice, the type of margarine you choose matters. Tub margarine is a better choice than block margarine. Read the label and look for the lowest trans and hydrogenated fat content. Most tub margarines in Canada are non-hydrogenated and contain no trans fat. In this case, instead of hydrogenation, the makers have added some saturated fats such as modified palm oil to keep it solid. Read the label and choose a tub margarine that has the lowest saturated and trans fat content. Some are as low as 1 g per serving. Butter It takes 10.2 litres of fresh cow’s milk to make a pound (454 g) of butter. Separate the cream from the milk, churn it until it thickens, add a dash of salt and you have butter. An old-fashioned natural product, butter does not undergo any hydrogenation. It contains about 50% saturated fats, known collectively as bad fats for our heart health and does contain cholesterol. However, new research reveals some hidden natural benefits found in butter fat. Research shows that CLA (conjugated linoleum acid) is a potent cancer inhibitor. Just one teaspoon (5 mL) of butter contains 19 mg of CLA. CLA fat may also aid in fat loss and increase muscle mass. Other micronutrients in butter include sphingolipids and butyric acid (a good saturated fat - not all saturated fats are bad for us!) that also show cancer inhibition potential. But that does not mean that you can layer the butter on thickly. If butter is your choice, use it sparingly; remember, moderation wins the nutrition race.
