BLUE JACKETS NOTES IN THEIR 18th SEASON Columbus is in its 18th NHL season, looking to continue its upward trajectory and earn the sixth winning season in the past seven campaigns. The Jackets completed their 17th season with a 45-30-7 record (97 pts.), finishing fourth in the Metropolitan Division, seventh in the Eastern Conference and 14th overall in the NHL. The 2017-18 campaign marked the second-best regular season in club history after 2016-17’s 50-24-8 (108 pts.) season. The Blue Jackets hit the 42-win mark for the fourth time in the past five seasons. Columbus earned a playoff spot for the second-straight campaign, a first in franchise history, and fell in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals to the eventual Stanley Cup champion once again (Pittsburgh in 2017 and Washington in 2018).

HOME AT NATIONWIDE The Jackets return home after splitting their two-game trip to Florida last Thursday/Saturday. The club (1-1-0 at home this season) plays three-straight and five of the next six contests at Nationwide Arena. Columbus is 7-3-0 in its last 10 home games dating back to Oct. 21, 2016, outscoring opponents 31-21 during that stretch. Just two of those October home games have been decided after regulation with the Jackets winning both of them (Oct. 27, 2017 vs. Winnipeg and Oct. 30, 2017 vs. Boston.

AMONG THE LEAGUE’S BEST Columbus has been among the best teams in the NHL in picking up wins over the past few seasons. Dating back to the 2016-17 campaign, the Jackets are fifth-T in the league in wins (98, Boston), trailing only Washington (106) along with Nashville, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay (99).

WEST HEAVY SCHEDULE The beginning of the 2018-19 season for the Jackets is a schedule heavy in Western Conference opponents. The team plays eight of its first 15 games against West opponents. On the flip side, the Blue Jackets have just two games against Metro Division rivals during that stretch (Oct. 5 vs. Carolina and Oct. 18 vs. Philadelphia).

YOUTH IS SERVED The Jackets’ youth has been on full display over the past three campaigns. The club has had the youngest opening night lineup in two of the past three season openers, averaging 25 years and 32 days in the 2016-17 opener vs. Boston and 25 years, 24 days last Thursday at Detroit. In 2017-18, the Jackets’ average age ranked sixth youngest at 25 years, 287 days in the club’s 5-0 win vs. the Islanders.

SHOTS AHOY The Blue Jackets have recorded 30 or more shots in each of their five contests this season, ranking ninth-T in the NHL in shots per contest (34.0). The team has posted 30-plus shots in each of the past nine contests dating back to Mar. 31 at Vancouver (33.6 average).

FOR THE WIN The duo of forward Artemi Panarin and defenseman Markus Nutivaara have been instrumental in each of the Jackets’ three wins this season. Panarin has recorded two game winners (Oct. 4 at Detroit and Oct. 9 vs. Colorado) and assisted on Cam Atkinson’s winning goal on Oct. 11 at Florida. Each of Nutivaara’s assists on the campaign have been recorded on the eventual game winner. TONIGHT’S GAME The Flyers visit the Columbus Blue Jackets in their seventh game of the season and fourth at home. The Flyers are 3-3-0 on the season after a 6-5 shootout win over the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night in Philadelphia. They are continuing through a light stretch of the schedule that contains just six games in a two-week span, four of which are at home; this game tonight is actually the Flyers’ longest road trip in that timeframe. The Flyers will return home following tonight’s contest to host the New Jersey Devils on Saturday afternoon.

FLYERS vs. BLUE JACKETS This is the first of four games between the Flyers and Blue Jackets this season. Columbus will visit Philadelphia twice in December, on the 6th and 22nd, and the Flyers will come back here on February 28.

The clubs played one another just 11 times in Columbus’s first 11 years of existence, when they were in the Western Conference, and the Flyers posted a record of 6-2-3. Since the Blue Jackets joined the East in 2013, the clubs have played 21 times and the Flyers are 6-9-6 during that period. However, the Flyers have points in four of their last five games against Columbus, going 3-1-1.

2017-18 RECAPS Saturday, December 23, 2017 – Columbus 2, Flyers 1 (SO) at Nationwide Arena: Pierre-Luc Dubois was the only shooter to tally in three shootout rounds, giving Columbus the extra point in a goaltending exhibition on the part of both teams. Columbus took the lead late in the first period on a Seth Jones shot from the point that deflected off a Flyer in front and past Brian Elliott; the Flyers answered just under four minutes into the second period on a similar drive through traffic from Ivan Provorov that beat Sergei Bobrovsky. Neither goaltender yielded another tally till Dubois got through in the final shootout round, as Bobrovsky stopped all three Flyers shooters following 30 saves in regulation and overtime. Elliott stopped 35 for the Flyers. Stars of the Game: 1 – Sergei Bobrovsky; 2 – Brian Elliott; 3 – Pierre-Luc Dubois.

Friday, February 16, 2018 – Flyers 2, Columbus 1 (OT) at Nationwide Arena: Sean Couturier scored 1:52 into overtime to give the Flyers their first win in Columbus in over 12 years. Wayne Simmonds had put the Flyers up 1-0 with 9:35 in the second, but the Blue Jackets tied it on a goal by Cam Atkinson with 3:28 to play in the third. Couturier’s game-winner came off a 2-on-1 with Travis Konecny. Michal Neuvirth earned the win with 35 saves, while Sergei Bobrovsky absorbed the loss with 23 stops. Stars of the Game: 1 – Michal Neuvirth; 2 – Sergei Bobrovsky; 3 – Sean Couturier.

Thursday, February 22, 2018 – Flyers 2, Columbus 1 at Wells Fargo Center: Nolan Patrick scored with 10:11 remaining in the third period and the Flyers held on the rest of the way for the win. The Blue Jackets struck first with 7:09 left in the second when Artemi Panarin scored an unassisted goal, but the Flyers answered with two in the third – Claude Giroux tied the score 2:34 into the final period, and then Patrick’s power-play goal stood up as the game-winner. Petr Mrazek won his first game as a Flyer with 19 saves, while Sergei Bobrovsky took the loss with 18 stops. Stars of the Game: 1 – Claude Giroux; 2 – Petr Mrazek; 3 – Artemi Panarin.

Thursday, March 15, 2018 – Columbus 5, Flyers 3 at Wells Fargo Center: A pair of Columbus goals 11 seconds apart turned out to be a fatal blow in an eventual 5-3 setback. Oliver Bjorkstrand’s goal 9:41 into the game was quickly followed up by a goal from Boone Jenner, giving the Jackets the early 2-0 lead. Claude Giroux made it 2-1 less than two minutes later, but Cam Atkinson restored the two-goal lead with 1:52 left in the frame. Shayne Gostisbehere tallied 14 seconds into the second period on a power play, only to see Atkinson pick up another one just over three minutes later. Andrew MacDonald made it 4-3 with 7:37 left in the second, but the Flyers couldn’t another one past Sergei Bobrovsky. Atkinson potted an empty-netter with eight-tenths of a second left in the game. Petr Mrazek stopped six of 10 shots before stepping aside for Alex Lyon, who turned away all 18 shots he faced. Bobrovsky stopped 27 in the win. Stars of the Game: 1 – Cam Atkinson; 2 – Andrew MacDonald, 3 – Alex Lyon.

Tuesday, October 16, 2018 – Flyers 6, Florida 5 (SO) at Wells Fargo Center: Jordan Weal scored in the third round of the shootout to lift the Flyers to the 6-5 win over the Panthers. Florida started off the scoring with 2:02 left in the first period on a goal by Frank Vatrano, but Weal, Claude Giroux and Wayne Simmonds each tallied in the first 8:50 of the second period to turn that into a 3-1 lead. Vatrano struck again with 7:29 left in the second, but after that came two more Flyers goals – a second each for Giroux and Simmonds – to give the Flyers a 5-2 lead. But the Panthers were eventually able to tie the score on a late second period goal by Aleksander Barkov and third period tallies from him and Evgenii Dadonov. In the shootout, Jake Voracek and Barkov tallied in the first two rounds, setting the stage for Weal’s winner. Brian Elliott started and made 19 saves on 23 shots through 45:06 before stepping aside for Cal Pickard, who took the win with two saves in 19:54 of action and two saves in the shootout. Michael Hutchinson stopped 21 of 26 in the loss. Stars of the Game: 1 – Claude Giroux; 2 – Aleksander Barkov; 3 – Wayne Simmonds.

NOTABLES The Flyers scored five goals in the second period. It was the 62nd occasion out of 11,910 periods in franchise history that the team has scored five or more goals. The last such occasion was March 30, 2017 in the first period against the New York Islanders.

Christian Folin played 18:33 and recorded an assist. He was a plus-4, tying a career high he set on Oct. 18, 2017 with Los Angeles vs. Montreal.

Claude Giroux scored two goals and led the Flyers with eight shots on goal. It’s his ninth career game of eight or more shots but his first since Dec. 21, 2016 when he had 8 in a win over Washington. The Flyers are 6-1-2 when Giroux has eight or more shots on goal.

Wayne Simmonds scored twice, converting both his shots on goal, while playing just 12:33 due to 14 PIM. He now leads the Flyers with five goals on the season.

Jordan Weal had a goal and an assist for his fourth career two-point game and scored the game-winning shootout goal in the third round. He also went 9-for-13 (69 pct) on faceoffs.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

The Flyers have 21 goals on the season, which was tied for seventh in the NHL entering last night’s games. They’ve allowed 25, which was the second most allowed in the league before last night.

Jake Voracek and Claude Giroux share the team lead with eight points apiece – Giroux with 3G and 5A, and Voracek with 2G and 6A. Giroux has points in five of the Flyers’ six games this season, with the shutout loss to VGK the only exception, and he has multiple points in three of those five games. Voracek had a career-high five points (2G, 3A) last Wednesday at Ottawa and has one other multi- point game on the year.

Earlier this year, Giroux moved into third place in Flyers history in career assists, and he is 10 games away from moving into fourth place all-time in games played. Giroux is in his seventh season as the captain of the Flyers; only he and Bob Clarke have captained the team in seven or more seasons.

Wayne Simmonds leads the Flyers with five goals after a two-goal game on Tuesday. It tied him for seventh in the NHL entering last night’s games. Simmonds has had at least 24 goals in each of his six full seasons with the Flyers. In 2015-16, when he had his career- high 32 goals, Simmonds only had one goal in the first 13 games.

Since the start of last season, Giroux has 73 assists, the most of any player in the league in that timeframe. Voracek is tied for second with 71.

Scott Laughton recorded his third career two-goal game last Wednesday at Ottawa and now has three goals on the season through just six games. His career high for goals in a season was 10 last year, when he also played a career-high 81 games.

Shayne Gostisbehere has been credited with 22 shots on goal, which is tied for third in the NHL among defensemen.
