Robert Burns was a national poet of Scotland. He was born on the 25th January 1759 in , . He lived in Alloway until he was seven years old. He lived with his parents, Angus Broun and William Burnes, along with his six siblings. He had 3 brothers and three sisters. Burns’ parents were farmers and didn’t have much money but they ensured all six of their children had good education. As a child, burns went to ’s school in Alloway before moving to a school in Ayr. However, soon enough burns had to leave school due to financial problems within the family. Although Burns left school, it didn’t mean he got no education. He read the whole time when he wasn’t helping out on the farm. Robert Burns started to enjoy writing poems from a young age. When he was just15 years old he started to write poems to the girls who caught his eye. Throughout the years Robert started to get more serious about writing poems and at the age of 27 he became a professional poet. However, Burns wasn’t just a poet, he was a farmer, lyricist and he went on to be an excise man. On the 5th August 1788 Robert Burns got married to . They went on and had 9 of Burns’ 12 children. The other 3 children were to three other woman. Burns wrote about 300 songs which were poems but they got turned into songs! Burns’ most famous poem was named “Tam o Shanter”. He had many more amazing poems. On the 21st July 1796 Robert sadly passed away he had rheumatic fever and was drinking at the side of the road, fell asleep and got hypothermia in Dumfries. Robert was only 37 years old when he died. The 9th child Robert had with Jean Armour was born on the day of Burns’ funeral service. Burns night is a Scottish thing, however that doesn’t mean to say people don’t celebrate it world-wide. To Remember Robert Burns people around the world (mostly in Scotland) celebrate it by having haggis, carrots, neaps, whiskey sauce and a glass of whiskey! Sometimes people like to read out his poems and sing his songs to remember him too! We should remember him for all the amazing poems he wrote!
