Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This weekend we celebrate the feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino to be

canonized. San Lorenzo Ruiz was a layman, who suffered a cruel martyrdom in in 1637. When we think of canonized , we usually think of priests or , but the majority of saints in heaven are lay people. Most of them have not been formally canonized by the Church. John Paul II took care to single out for this honor. Fr. Paul Schmidt In the Constitution on the Church, the bishops of the devoted an entire chapter to the universal call to holiness. Holiness is not only for a select

few. It is for all of us. In the Church everyone, whether belonging to the hierarchy or being

cared for by it, is called to holiness, according to the saying of the Apostle: “For this is the

will of God, your sanctification.”

The Council tells how Jesus preached a gospel of holiness for all. “Be perfect, as

your heavenly Father is perfect.” He sent the Holy Spirit to dwell in us, so that we could

obey the great commandment of love. By faith and baptism we become the adopted children

of God, “sharers in the divine nature.” The Council adds a reminder that we are all sinners, Holiness and must continually pray for God’s mercy and forgiveness. Living a holy life is a lifelong process and requires God’s grace. is not only “By this holiness as such a more human manner of living is promoted in this earthly society.” Holiness does not take us out of the world. It means following in the footsteps of for a select few. Jesus in this world, conforming ourselves to the image of Christ and seeking the will of the Father in all things. “In this way the holiness of the people of God will grow into an It is for all of us. abundant harvest of good, as is admirably shown by the life of so many saints in Church history.” San Lorenzo Ruiz is one such example. The Council says that “in the various classes and differing duties of life, one and the same holiness is cultivated by all, who are moved by the Spirit of God, and who obey the voice of the Father and worship God the Father in spirit and in truth.” Each one of us has our own ‘personal and duties’ with which to respond to this call. The Council outlines how bishops, priests, religious, and other special people become holy. Then it turns to the laity, some of whom assist in particular apostolic work as a profession, but most of whom find their holiness as married, single, or widowed people. It singles out laborers, who imitate “the very Christ who plied his hands with carpenter’s tools.” These, in their daily work, “should climb to the heights of holiness and apostolic activity.” The Council also gives special attention to the poor and suffering. All are called to live a life of love, to hear God’s Word, to accept God’s will, to receive the Sacraments and participate in the Mass, to pray alone and in the community, to practice all the virtues. Some are called, as San Lorenzo was, to imitate Jesus in laying down their lives, “to give the supreme testimony” of shedding their blood for the faith. This San Lorenzo did willingly. “The church considers martyrdom as an exceptional and as the fullest proof of love. By martyrdom a is transformed into an image of the Master by freely accepting death for the salvation of the world.” The Council adds: “Though few are presented such an opportunity, nevertheless all must be prepared to confess Christ before men. They must be prepared to make this profession of faith even in the midst of persecutions, which will never be lacking to the Church, in following the way of the cross.” This includes all of us. May San Lorenzo Ruiz pray for us, that we may follow his example, and become holy saints of God. Your Pastor, Father Paul Schmidt
