Summer 2017.indd 1 29/08/2017 10:52:14 PRINCIPAL POINTS It has been a fantastic and exciting year at The Chalk Hills Academy, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year as Principal.

We have had some fantastic sporting achievements this term and Hannah Foster performed at the English Schools Athletics Finals during July. She won the final race with a time of 39.08 making her the National champion for the Inter Girls 300m. Well done Hannah!

Chalk Hills students thoroughly enjoyed both the Rock Assembly and work experience. We successfully placed over 260 Year 10 students who engaged professionally with local employers. We will also be working with Monarch Airlines during the next academic year and our students will work with staff on interview techniques, and professional careers advice.

We continue to expand as an academy and we held two successful public consultation events recently. Our new specialist standalone block will house up to 300 students and prove to be an excellent base for our Scientists and Post-16 students.

We are proud of both our multicultural and diverse student and staff body at The Chalk Hills Academy. We have been recognised as providing strong support for English as an Additional Language. I am thrilled to announce that we received the Silver Award Quality Mark for EAL provision from the EAL Academy during the Summer Term.

May I take this opportunity to wish all our pupils, staff and parents a restful Summer break. We look forward to celebrating and welcoming students back to the academy in September 2017.

Best wishes,

Louise Lee. Principal The Chalk Hills Academy

Summer 2017.indd 2 29/08/2017 10:52:18 CHALK HILLS STUDENTS CAN BE ‘COUNTED ON’ IN THE UK MATHS CHALLENGE

There has been a glut of precious metal at Chalk Hills thanks to our best mathematicians in years 9, 10 and 11. The school’s top maths students gained 3 gold, 10 silver and 9 bronze awards in this year’s UK Intermediate Maths challenge.

Special congratulations go to Razvan Moiseanu in year 10 and Sourav Debnaths and Toby Sison in year 9 who made it through to the second prestigious “Kangaroo” round. We are eagerly awaiting the results as the newsletter goes to print.

The UK maths challenge which took place in February is run by the UK Maths Trust. It is a national event which challenges 10s of thousands of students from across the UK to solve a series of fiendish mathematical puzzles in a strict timetable. It aims to stretch students mathematical thinking and problem solving skills. Year 7 and 8 students will be taking part in the Junior maths challenge in April.

Quote from Razvan “There were some tough questions which really challenged me to think quickly. I was extremely pleased with my score and hope I can do the school proud in the second round.”

Summer 2017.indd 4 29/08/2017 10:52:42 READING CHAMPIONS Our Reading Champions have made a super contribution across the Trust this year. They hosted an event for the Re adin g Ch a m pi o ns f ro m L in d e n an d Val e in A p r il an d p rove d themselves to be welcoming, enthusiastic and reliable . They carried out ‘Learning Walks’ during our first DEAR session and provided insightful and positive feedback. In June, our Reading Champions visited The Vale Academy to deliver reading workshops to EYFS as part of National Bookstart Week. Our students were consummate professionals; they showed maturity, warmth and great enthusiasm. A huge congratulations to them for being fantastic ambassadors for Chalk. Well done to Shimaz Shibley, Faith McNevin, Rhoda Ifilada, Kithusan Gnaneswaren, Navidad Musomza and Kaitlin Ward . . . and a BIG thank you.

WOMEN IN ENGINEERING CELEBRATION EVENT AT CRANFIELD UNIVERSITY Mrs Martin and I (Mr Akpa) took 12 year 9 and 10 girls to Cranfield University to attend the Women in Engineering event aimed at encouraging and creating opportunities for more female students to take up careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related fields. During the event, the students listened to inspirational speeches from women in various fields of engineering, removing the myth that engineering is for men only and took part in various activities including discussion with engineering companies. All the girls that attended left with positives about the event and engineering, so watch out for budding female engineers from Chalk Hills Academy!

Summer 2017.indd 5 29/08/2017 10:52:44 Love Peace and unity

Our students took some time out in PL lessons to discuss the terrorist events over the past few months that have affected our country and our communities.

Each student had a piece of card that they were asked to write on after they had watched some videos surrounding the events and they were encouraged to express their thoughts and feelings.

We are in the process of making these cards into a peace, love and unity rainbow display which the students can then spend time looking at and reflecting on.

GOVERNANCE The Trust would like to extend our thanks to the parents for their support of both The Chalk Hills Academy and indeed The Shared Learning Trust. The voice of parents is of utmost importance to the Trust, so we would urge you to engage fully with the academy staff to quickly address concerns regarding your children, should they arise. We have recently undergone two elections for parent governors and I am very grateful to Mr Edmund Ackah and Mr Hassan Saleem Raja for taking the role as parent governors on The Chalk Hills Academy local governing board (LGB). In addition to this role, Mr Ackah is a member of the academy staff, but on the LGB he represents the views of parents and as such is readily contactable via the academy.

Summer 2017.indd 6 29/08/2017 10:52:45 Mrs. Breslin After more than 17 years of ser- vice, Mrs Breslin has now moved on, here’s a short interview... How long have you been in the profession and what inspired you to want to work with young people with special educational needs? “I have been in the profession since 1970, coming straight from universi- ty, starting off as a teacher for 4 years and then taking a 10 year break to raise my family, and then back into teaching since 1984. I am qualified as a maths teacher in Liverpool. I then moved south and took an opportunity as a Special Educa- tional Needs Coordinator, I really like working with individual pupils, it is so important to know them well and know there needs. Once I started it it was so rewarding and I have enjoyed it so much. It is wonderful to work with a team that care so much for the students, the pastoral team here is just fantastic.” I hear in your spare time you like running a marathon or two, how do you prepare for something like that? “Well, you just run… lol. You run regularly on the weekends etc. and build it up. They say in run- ning you should run at least half the distance before you do the full distance, running a half marathon is quite easy. I mainly do it for fun and fitness, I started running when I was over 50 because my children are very athletic and into sport. I have run the Luton Marathon making some sponsorship money for the Keech Hospice, and also the London Marathon raising money for Alzheimer’s, and plenty of smaller half marathons.” After a little bit of research I found out that your surname Breslin is of Irish Origin, is this where you are originally from? “No, my husband’s family come from Irish originally and then they moved to Liverpool, I met him at University. My family are Polish and I remember learning English when I went to school, my maiden name was Toporovska, my hometown in England is Oxford, that was where I was born and where I lived for most of my childhood. My parents came after the 2nd World War as refu- gees, we lived in a refugee camp in Fairford. We lived in Nissen huts, and didn’t have hot water at the time. When we finally did get a house, it was amazing! We had no money at the time, and were given the money for the deposit from a priest who received compensation money for be- ing in a concentration camp during the war, and my mother has never forgotten to thank him as otherwise we would have never managed to afford a house, we were very thankful for that. I was 7 years old when we finally got a ‘proper’ house.” Your spoken word poetry during your leaving speech was very moving, what inspired you to write it? “My daughter is a published poet and playwright in New Zealand and she has just published a book called Alzheimer’s and Spoon about my mother who had alzheimer’s. I read the poem to her but I didn’t send it to her because I didn’t want her to change it (lol), but she liked it, I wanted it to be my poem, I know it sounds bad, she is so much better at writing than I am.” What are your future plans? “I am very lucky, I wanted to downsize my hours and travel, so I have secured a job teaching Eng- lish as an additional language to Polish students as well as students with other language barriers at a Catholic school in Milton Keynes.”

Summer 2017.indd 7 29/08/2017 10:52:47 Geneva and CERN trip 2017

25 Year 10, 11 and 12 students visited Geneva for 3 days with a view to expand their knowledge of Particle Physics, Maths, Geopolitics and History. The first stop after a long day of travelling was a rather bleary-eyed visit to CERN. We were im- mersed into the wonderful world of Particle Phys- ics with a fascinating lecture detailing the particles and forces that underlie the very nature of reality. Following the lecture we got the bus, crossed the border over to the site of the particle accelerators where we descended 7m underground to the site of the Compact Muon Solenoid detector (CMS), where the magnetic field was so strong (about 100,000 times stronger than the earth’s magnetic field) that a paper clip chain would attract to any surrounding metal. The main purpose of the CMS detector is to study the prop- erties of the Higgs Boson and to look for evidence of ex- tra dimensions. The next trip was to the UN headquarters, where students had the opportunity to soak up the exciting diplomatic at- mosphere by being in the very rooms where important issues such as human rights, environmental issues and world peace are discussed by the delegates of the world’s leaders. Students were very forthcoming about their pressing concerns on world issues when they were invited to ask questions. On the tour of the UN headquarters, displays of artefacts from around the world pro- vided an interesting insight into the diversity of human culture. Across the road from the UN headquarters was the Red Cross and Cres- cent Museum which was our next stop. Here the students reflected upon the consequences of some of the issues discussed at the UN by viewing the thought provoking exhibits on slavery, recovering missing persons and the pro- vision of foreign aid. The final highlight to the trip was exploring the stunning natural beauty of Lake Geneva, where students and staff alike took great delight in the water taxi rides and relaxing on the beautifully clean beach.

MEDIA NEWS Year 10 students in media have worked consistently all year to complete coursework worth 60% of their GCSE. Their diligence has not only ensured maximum time for their exam content as year 11s, it has additionally secured them a pizza party during their last lesson of the year. Students have produced a variety of coursework pieces, including two textual investigations on genre in sitcom and representation in lifestyle magazines to an in depth production for which they conducted research into the film industry and audiences, and planed and constructed their own film poster campaign consisting of a teaser and cinematic poster for the same film. To earn an invitation, students have completed each piece of their coursework to three or more levels of progress, which has occurred well in advance of the exam board deadline of May 2018. Congratulations to everyone who earned an invitation, we are incredibly proud of your hard work!

As a reward for all the hard work they have been doing they got a treat of fairy cakes with strawberries on top.

Miss Harvey then used some of the strawberries to make some jars of homemade jam which we will be using for toast in our morning breakfast club.

The science department also used the school garden to con- duct an experiment into PH levels in the soil and how this affects crop growth and as you can see we got a lovely bunch of radishes!

Summer 2017.indd 12 29/08/2017 10:53:27 THE ANNE FRANK EXHIBITION This year saw the return of our hugely successful partnership with The Anne Frank Trust. 20 student ambassadors have been trained to guide groups around a wonderful exhibition cen- tred around Anne Frank’s life and story and the history that led to the publishing of her diary.

The Trust draws on the power of the diary and Anne’s life to challenge prejudice and reduce hatred, encouraging people to embrace positive attitudes, responsibility and respect for others.

We followed the guided tours with a week of workshops to Year 7 and Year 10 to bring the his- torical elements of Anne’s story into a modern context. These workshops were designed to give students an opportunity to explore and discuss a wide range of issues and topics with staff from The Anne Frank Trust and reflect on what they have learnt from the exhibition.

Over 70 students have already said YES to NCS! … Could your son or daughter?

In partnership with National Citizen Service (NCS), we wish all of our Year 11 and Year 12 students who’ve signed up to NCS for this Sum- mer the very best of luck as they begin their NCS adventure over the coming weeks.

NCS is a life-enhancing programme open to young people in Year 11 and Year 12 and places are funded by the government. During Summer 2016 and this Summer over 70 of our students said YES to NCS - the biggest youth development programme in England. NCS is officially rec- ognised by UCAS, leading universities and UK employers.

Why take part in NCS? Your son/daughter gets the chance to … • develop their confidence and independence along with skills that employers look for, such as teamwork, leadership and communication • make a positive difference in their local community • meet amazing people, make new friends and gain memories that will last a lifetime • become an ‘NCS Graduate’ and receive a certificate signed by the Prime Minister.

Here at Chalk Hills we’re really supportive of NCS and are keen for more students to get in- volved in Summer 2018. If your son or daughter will be in Year 11 or Year 12 in September, then NCS will be coming into The Chalk Hills Academy to talk to them about this opportunity so they can sign up.

Look out for more information this Autumn or, if you can’t wait that long, visit www.learnbyde- sign.co.uk/ncs-school-link-east-ea1/ for more information!

Summer 2017.indd 14 29/08/2017 10:53:45 10 OUT OF 10 FOR CHALK HILLS Ten of Chalk Hills’ brightest and best Year 10 maths students were inspired to aim for the top at a special event hosted by Bedfordshire University.

The event organised by the Further Maths Support Group aimed to inform, inspire and educate able maths students to study at A ‘Level and beyond. The group are particularly keen to reach out to able students that are not sure about studying maths at .

The day started with a talk highlighting the earning potential of students, including the varied careers and other qualifications that A Level maths skills support. Following this, students took part in three workshops.

The first took the tightly knit Chalk Hills’ students out of their comfort zone. Split into teams from different schools they had to work collaboratively, with people they had just met, to answer a series of mathematical problems. It was hardly surprising when the win- ning team included our student Annmol Anil. She took home a valuable guide to problem solving as a prize.

In the next workshop, students investigated the mathematics of nature. The how and why of simple mathematical rules that govern the shape and form of animals and plants. Students saw how the Fibonacci sequence can predict the population of animals and is seen in the layout of plants. Investigating further, the Year 10s saw that these patterns in the layout of plant leaves are a mathematical consequence of the need for plants to efficiently capture sunlight.

The third session saw students, and teachers, amazed by what looked like magic tricks. The presenter then challenged us all to uncover the mathematical and scientific prin- ciples behind them, which allowed what appeared impossible, possible. This included discovering how to tie a knot in a tie with a simple flick of the hand, and to wrap a ring in a chain by dropping it.

Perhaps the most inspirational talk was by Dr Katie Steckles who gained her PhD from Manchester in 2011 and is now a research mathematician and speaker who gave stu- dents an insight into academic life. She explained that her research meant she is paid to solve puzzles including how to sort pancakes quickly!
