Based on Gisborne Hospital’s grounds, the module will house Matai Research’s state-of-the-art MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine, a General Electric Healthcare 3-Tesla. While workers readied the magnet to be craned out of its plywood hut on the back of a truck, another truck delivered a shipping container to the site. The MRI’s components will be stored in the container while the machine is assembled. Assembly will take about a week, after which the machine will be filled with liquid helium. This will keep the machine cool enough for the electric current to flow around the tube with zero resistance. The coolant provides the level of superconductivity required to enable generation of high-intensity magnetic fields in the MRI scanner. Once installed, the MRI machine will be tested so it is ready to go live on September 7. Picture by Liam Clayton

We are proud to introduce: He Rangitapu, He Tohu Ora Tairāwhiti Wellbeing Framework Our people, whānau and communities of Tairāwhiti are able to live the lives we value, in ways that matter to us. This aspirational framework provides the Trust with a guiding set of outcomes by which to align our strategy, operations, and investments. It is designed to be a smaller-schools counterpart to the Weka Ball, which is Poverty Bay primary school rugby’s equivalent of the Ranfurly Shield. The inaugural game for the new trophy was held last weekend, with Ormond hosting the Waerenga-o-Kuri-Matawai Rural Mixed rugby team. A hard-fought game was won by the Rural Mixed team, 70-25. Waerenga-o-Kuri School principal Richard McCosh said the shield was an exciting initiative to promote the game. His students were buzzing about being the first holders. “They were very excited to bring back the shield and show their friends . . . we’ll have an assembly to show off the trophy and talk about George Bridge.” The new shield is named after the Crusaders and All Black winger, who went to school in this district and says he still considers Gisborne his hometown. “Gisborne is a special place for me — I’d love to get home at some stage and give back to the community — but it’s quite tough for me right in the thick of the season,” Bridge said this week. “It’s obviously pretty special having the shield named after me.
