Bill’s Guide to Week Two of the 47th Annual Chicago International Film Festival By Bill Stamets Special for Films for Two® My recommended films in Week Two (in “must see” order): 1.) Pina: German director Wim Wenders previously profiled Japanese film director Yasujiro Ozu, Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto and Cuban musicians. His latest documentary introduces cinefiles to the choreography of German avant-gardist Pina Bausch. In his first use of 3-D cinematography, Wenders evokes the volume of the stage, even for performances staged in non-theatrical settings, including a tramway and an escalator. Four different works are presented. Some are revisited via archival 2-D footage. Seeing various versions adds more figurative depth to our appreciation of Bausch's work than the 3-D adds literal depth to our onscreen perception. Bausch's death during the making of the film may have lent an elegiac note to the laudatory interviews with members of her international company Tanztheater Wuppertal. They do not speak on camera during looking-into-the lens portrait sessions. The soundtrack excerpts their comments, apparently recorded off- camera, to underscore their role as voiceless dancers. Wenders channels Bausch's tactile and theoretical grasp of the body as metaphysical material for art. 2.) The Descendants: Alexander Payne (Sideways, About Schmidt, Election, Citizen Ruth) directs George Clooney as Matt King, an Hawaiian lawyer dealing with his wife hospitalized in a coma and their 10-year-old and 17- year-old daughters. Payne and his co-writers start from Kaui Hart Hemmings' 2008 novel for a truly touching male melodrama, as Clooney's character reconciles his mixed emotions about his wife. -

Crossroads Film and Television Program List This resource list will help expand your programmatic options for the Crossroads exhibition. Work with your local library, schools, and daycare centers to introduce age-appropriate books that focus on themes featured in the exhibition. Help libraries and bookstores to host book clubs, discussion programs or other learning opportunities, or develop a display with books on the subject. This list is not exhaustive or even all encompassing – it will simply get you started. Rural themes appeared in feature-length films from the beginning of silent movies. The subject matter appealed to audiences, many of whom had relatives or direct experience with life in rural America. Historian Hal Barron explores rural melodrama in “Rural America on the Silent Screen,” Agricultural History 80 (Fall 2006), pp. 383-410. Over the decades, film and television series dramatized, romanticized, sensationalized, and even trivialized rural life, landscapes and experiences. Audiences remained loyal, tuning in to series syndicated on non-network channels. Rural themes still appear in films and series, and treatments of the subject matter range from realistic to sensational. INTRODUCTION The Big Thing in popular literature in the 1980s and the early 1990s was cyberpunk, and academics loved it:1 Neuromancer2 was dark. It was serious. It dripped Weltschmerz from every page. But the essential nihilism of the genre, so delightful to cultural scholars, offered little for lawyers. Deconstructing The Descendants: How George Clooney Ennobled Old Hawaiian Trusts and Made the Rule Against Perpetuities Sexy By Professor Randall Roth The first and last sections of this essay are about a reel story. Of course I’m talking about the movie, The Descendants. It is based on a book of the same name, written by Kaui Hart Hemmings.1 The stories in the book and the film are quite similar, but not identical.2 The movie was nominated for five Academy Awards: best screenplay, best editing, best direction, best leading actor, and best movie. It won for best screenplay. If you saw the movie and stayed to watch all the credits—and I mean all the credits—you saw my name. It was the last name, on the last screen—appearing right after Dollar Rent-A-Car—but it was there. My involvement began three years earlier with a phone call from one of the movie’s producers wanting me to meet with Alexander Payne, the creative genius who was writing the script and in a few months would be directing the movie. I had not yet read the book, but the chance to meet with a successful moviemaker sounded like fun, so I invited both of them—Alexander and the producer—over to dinner. I also invited my Broken Trust3 co-author, federal judge Sam King, 1 Hemmings happens to be the daughter of longtime family friends. The Descendants is her first novel. Interestingly, the movie’s producers acquired the movie rights to the book while it was just a pre-publication manuscript. -
