Daniela Roberta Holdefer1*; Junir Antonio Lutinski2; Flávio Roberto Mello Garcia3 Abstract Does organic management of agroecosystems contribute to the maintenance of the richness of ants? This study assessed the richness of ant species in organically farmed crop agroecosystems of different ages located in the southern state of Paraná, Brazil. During the sampling, the pitfalls that were active during May/August 2009 and from October 2009 to February 2010 were used. A total of 11,874 ants belonging to five subfamilies was sampled, comprising 18 genera and 48 species. The subfamily Myrmicinae (S = 27) had the highest richness, followed by the genera Pheidole (S = 10), Solenopsis (S = 7), Formicinae (S = 3), Camponotus (S = 5), and Brachymyrmex (S = 5). The average difference between the observed richness (Sobs) and the estimated richness (Chao2) was 10.9%. Ant assemblages belonging to agroecosystems under organic management for long times presented the greatest richness, indicating that this system contributes to the maintenance of ant diversity. Este trabalho avaliou a riqueza de formigas presentes em lavouras inseridas em agroecossistemas de manejo orgânico, com tempos de integralização diferentes, localizados no sul do Estado do Paraná, Brasil. Na amostragem, foram utilizadas pitfalls que permaneceram ativas nos períodos de maio a agosto de 2009 e outubro de 2009 a fevereiro de 2010. Foram amostradas 11.874 formigas pertencentes a cinco subfamílias, 18 gêneros e 48 espécies. Destacou-se em riqueza a subfamília Myrmicinae (S = 27) e os gêneros Pheidole (S = 10) e Solenopsis (S = 7). Também Formicinae (S = 3) e os gêneros Camponotus (S = 5) e Brachymyrmex (S = 5). A diferença média entre a riqueza observada (Sobs) e a estimada (Chao 2) foi de 10,9%. Assembleias pertencentes aos agroecossistemas com maior tempo de manejo orgânico foram as mais ricas, indicando que este sistema contribui para a manutenção da diversidade de formigas. The ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region was used as molecular marker for the molecular identifica- tion and to evaluate the phylogeny within the Leucoagaricus genus. One fungal symbiont associated with A. pubescens was isolated and identified as L. gongylophorus. The phylogeny of Leucoagaricus obtained using the ITS molecular marker revealed three well established monophyletic groups. It was possible to recognize one clade of Leucoagaricus associated with phylogenetically derived leaf-cutting ants (Acromyrmex and Atta). A second clade of free living forms of Leucoagaricus (non-cultivated), and a third clade of Leucoagaricus associated with phylogenetically basal genera of ants were also recognized.

El bioensayo de ingestión con Bt permitió reconocer 3 aislamientos que produjeron mortalidades de 45 a 54%, concentraciones subletales entre 9,97×101 y 5,86×107 µg mL-1 y tiempos de muerte de 5 y 6 días; valores que coincidieron con los reportes de algunos autores que han investigado la entomotoxidad de δ-endotoxinas sobre himenópteros.

They can be very common in mature colonies of Formicidae like leaf-cutter and fungus-growing ants of genus Acromyrmex (Attini) from a variety of microhabitats. Loiácono et al. (2000) collected 1560 wasps (adults and immatures) from 430 parasitized larvae from three partial colonies of Acromyrmex, which shows how aggressive these wasps can be attacking the ants.

    Myrmecological News 24 1-30 Vienna, March 2017 Fossil ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae): ancient diversity and the rise of modern lineages Phillip BARDEN Abstract The ant fossil record is summarized with special reference to the earliest ants, first occurrences of modern lineages, and the utility of paleontological data in reconstructing evolutionary history. During the Cretaceous, from approximately 100 to 78 million years ago, only two species are definitively assignable to extant subfamilies – all putative crown group ants from this period are discussed. Among the earliest ants known are unexpectedly diverse and highly social stem- group lineages, however these stem ants do not persist into the Cenozoic. Following the Cretaceous-Paleogene boun- dary, all well preserved ants are assignable to crown Formicidae; the appearance of crown ants in the fossil record is summarized at the subfamilial and generic level. Generally, the taxonomic composition of Cenozoic ant fossil communi- ties mirrors Recent ecosystems with the "big four" subfamilies Dolichoderinae, Formicinae, Myrmicinae, and Ponerinae comprising most faunal abundance. As reviewed by other authors, ants increase in abundance dramatically from the Eocene through the Miocene. Proximate drivers relating to the "rise of the ants" are discussed, as the majority of this increase is due to a handful of highly dominant species. In addition, instances of congruence and conflict with molecular- based divergence estimates are noted, and distinct "ghost" lineages are interpreted. The ant fossil record is a valuable resource comparable to other groups with extensive fossil species: There are approximately as many described fossil ant species as there are fossil dinosaurs. The incorporation of paleontological data into neontological inquiries can only seek to improve the accuracy and scale of generated hypotheses.

Colonies of the red harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex barbatus, do various tasks outside the nest. There is a daily temporal pattern in the numbers of ants engaged in each of five activities: foraging, nest maintenance, patrolling, midden work and convening. Perturbations were carried out in the field to investigate how the daily round changes in response to environmental events and colony needs. Interfering with nest maintenance, foraging or both caused changes in the temporal patterns in all five of the observed activities. Removing nest maintenance workers, foragers or both caused the numbers involved in all five activities to decrease, and there were temporal patterns in the effects of removals. The results of both interference and removal experiments show that the extent to which a worker group does one activity affects the behaviour of other groups. When nest maintenance or foraging is impeded experimentally, these two activities are of reciprocal priority. When both are impeded, foraging is of higher priority than nest maintenance. Harvester ants forage, patrol, maintain the nest speaking, that of an equilibrium state, but the area and foraging trails, collect and arrange dynamics of colony organization are not yet under- pebbles on the nest, and gather in small groups, stood.
