Being Ambassador’s from Manitoba, it was a priority to reach out and create long term bonds with the Indiana girls tackle football community. As coaches and leaders in the game, we are very encouraged by our overall development of our players and the state of girls tackle football in Winnipeg.” – Dennis Radlinsky Manitoba Girls Football Association and North Winnipeg Nomads Battle the Indiana Girls Tackle Football League Battle of the Border For those unaware, the Manitoba Girls Football Association (MGFA) and the North Winnipeg Nomads Football Club took part in a battle of the border against the Indiana Girls Tackle Football League (IGTFL) November 18th, 2017. The organizers, IGTFL, hosted a great football event for both the Senior and Junior ages. Being the second year for the IGTFL, our MGFA Nomads club was able to set the bar and show what it takes to develop quality players in sport. The game turned victory for our Junior girls, with a final score of 33-31. Lisa Cummings, of the Manitoba Girls Football Association acknowledged the incredible talent of the Indiana Girls Tackle Football League, “Being honest here, Indiana had a couple really good athletes.” However, “our program (the MGFA Nomads) showed what you can do after years of growing. From a technical standpoint, our girls were, overall, more technically sound.” The Senior girls victory was a lop-sided Manitoba Girls Football Association and North thrashing, 40-6. The MGFA Nomads program Winnipeg Nomads, Senior O.C Mike had a mix of athletes from 1 to 8 years of Matwayashing, mentions: experience. Lisa commented further on the “This journey to Indiana was a vision to experience a variety of experience found within their team, showcase of girls’ football. With two countries working explaining “our experience was definitely an together for the love of the game of football, the vision was a reality. To be part of the journey to break down barriers of advantage, however, you couldn’t tell which football is only the start of something big, thanks for the ride.” players were the experienced vs non- – Mike Matwayashing experienced, which means our program is definitely doing what is right for our players.” Similarly, the MGFA All Star Game that took place July 29th, this Inaugural (FIRST EVER) event is another example of the determination and commitment shown by the MGFA in conjunction with the North Winnipeg Nomads to not only provide an opportunity for women to play football, but lead the sport and athletes to new accomplishments. With all the support of Manitoba, we wish the North Winnipeg Nomads and the MGFA continued success in creating groundbreaking opportunities for participation and competition in women’s football! With the tackle season coming to a close, I have a few thoughts to share. I think it is critical to thank the group of volunteers that allow our many leagues to run. With this being my first season “behind the scenes” I have a newfound appreciation for the work that goes into the MMFA, Midget League, WHSFL, and Major Junior (along with the many other leagues I did not have the pleasure of seeing yet). There is an army of volunteers, but there is also a core group of people who work tirelessly with little or no recognition, to allow our kids an opportunity to play the game of football. To all of these people, I extend a heartfelt thank you! Now is also the time to reflect on our recently ended season, and to begin to look ahead at needed revisions and refinements to allow the game to flourish. Know that we here at Football Manitoba are looking ahead, and planning ways to help football grow. I know each of our clubs are doing the same. Please know that if there is anything we at Football Manitoba can do in terms of policy development or governance assistance with your leagues or clubs, please let us know. All the best to all members of our community as we head into the holiday season. I hope you all enjoy some peaceful time, and are able to connect with loved ones.
