Political column: Reaction to CNN’s Democratic debate

After what seemed like forever, the Democratic candidates for president finally took the stage last Tuesday night to discuss their visions for the country. Firstly, I would like to thank CNN and .Anderson Cooper for asking hard­ hitting questions that addressed the many elephants in the room. It was refreshing to hear a debate on the issues instead of the blustering and personal attacks that have defined the GOP debates up to this point. The tone of the exchanges is just as important as the substance— and Tuesday’s debate reminded us that civility is possible. She managed to establish herself as liberal enough and seem a bit more relatable (though still a tad robotic) to continue to justify herself as the frontrunner for the nomination. Clinton was further aided by Sen. Sanders, who dismissed the controversy surrounding her emails as “unimportant.” Tuesday night went a long way to helping Clinton ease concerns while positioning herself for the general election. Martin O’Malley showed himself to be the real liberal democrat on the stage in a race with no room for one. He scored points on gun control, but his conciliatory tone made one wonder whether he was really running for vice president.
