Is There Dignity in Being Bald
Ain’t No Such Thing as a Bald Headed Rock Star One of my many fantasies in life was to be a rock star (as recounted in Chapter 4). And, as you know, the key reason I had no hope whatsoever of being a rock star is a breathtaking lack of any discernable talent for the guitar…or for singing. The only thing I had going for me was a full head of black hair, and as one long forgotten girlfriend told me when I was a junior in high school, a faint and distant resemblance to Ricky Nelson. Even that started to go wrong during my freshman year in college. I began to find a few black hairs in the tub after washing my hair. I wondered if… Certainly not me! Couldn’t be! I had a widow’s peak, just like Ricky and Elvis…. I was destined to be a rock star or a network newsman. Hair was a prerequisite. I simply couldn’t be losing my hair. My grandfather (on my mother’s side) was bald. As were all my uncles on mom’s side of the family. Cue ball bald. With just that little horseshoe fringe around the sides. I’d read somewhere, probably in Reader’s Digest, that baldness is hereditary. If your relatives on your mother’s side of the family are bald, chances are fabulous that you will, indeed, be just as bald as they are. The good news, you’ll save money on haircuts. One summer evening, after a long day at my summer job at the paper mill, I’d taken a shower, washed my hair, and was watching TV. -

I am not saying its verses, nor am I saying its words, but rather light pervades its every letter. Why? They said because an-Nur (light) is among the [onomatopoeic] words whose pronunciation points to their meaning, and defines them more than any other definition. Consequently, people recognize an-Nur simply through the pronunciation of this word. Light is not defined except by the true nature of that which it performs, namely being that by which visible things become apparent, and by which creation is revealed. -

FULL TEXT BOOK Scientific Program Lecture Summaries Oral Presentations Poster Presentations 1 INVITATION Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce the 5th INDERCOS Congress, taking place 12-15 March 2020 in İstanbul-TURKEY. The main topics of this meeting will be “Immunogenetics in Dermatology and Aging”. Through plenaries and parallel workshop sessions, we aim to share insights and experiences and discuss how advances in aesthetic and general dermatology. In order to success this, we have very distinctive international speakers with extensive experience and a range of expertise across aesthetic dermatology and dermatology. Several major histocompatibility complex and nonmajor histocompatibility complex genetic polymorphisms have been identified which may contribute to the inflammatory skin diseases and skin aging. Most of these genetic variants are associated with mechanisms attributed to the pathogenesis of skin disease and aging, including pathways involved in cytokines, chemokine and vitamin regulation and ultraviolet light exposure and other environmental factors. Immunogenetics is a subspeciality of medicine that studies the relationship between genetics and immunology. Immunogenetics helps in understanding the pathogenesis of several autoimmune, malign, infectious skin diseases and also skin aging. 5th INDERCOS congress focuses on the genetic research areas of autoimmune skin diseases such as connective tissue diseases, psoriasis, skin cancers, vasculitis, skin aging and skin infections. Lectures on genetics of cell interaction with immune system, immune response to transplantation, immune based therapies for treatment of cancers and inflammatory skin diseases and aging, antigenic phylogeny of alleles, alloantigens will be discussed. So are Bruce Willis, surfer god Kelly Slater and famous footballer Thierry Henry. Contrary to the ego-shrinking stereotype of baldness, the minimalist look gives these gents mettle. A man's shaved head—whether it's to-the-skin or with slight stubble—can suggest a sigh-inspiring combination of intellectual depth and machismo. For more information, please contact [email protected]. Mark Drummond Davis We Were Treated Like Machines: Professionalism and Anti-Blackness in Social Work Agency Culture ABSTRACT This exploratory study sought to answer two overarching research questions: (1) To what extent is there color-blind anti-Black bias in the way that professionalism is defined and enforced in social work agency culture? (2) What are exacerbating and ameliorating factors for this anti- Black bias? I developed a mixed-methods online questionnaire and recruited 246 participants via e-mail and Facebook. Participants were mostly White female social workers 18-39 years old, though the sample was disproportionately African American as compared with the general social worker population. When participants were asked if they perceived anti-Black bias in professionalism at their agencies, 42.7% answered yes while 57.3% answered no. A t-test demonstrated a significant difference in agencies’ percentage of African American staff members by reported bias (t(113) = 3.24, p = .002, two-tailed). Participants who answered yes to bias had a lower mean percentage of African American staff in their agencies (M = 2.70, SD = 1.17) than those who answered no (M = 3.49, SD = 1.37).
