Three oestrid subfamilies have been recorded in Saudi Arabia and/or Egypt by six genera: Gasterophilus (Gasterophilinae), Hypoderma, Przhevalskiana (Hypodermatinae), Cephalopi- na, Oestrus, and Rhinoestrus (Oestrinae). A, HYSLOP ' A GOOD MANY AGES AGO, insects originated the idea of thumbing a ride from one part of the country or one part of the world to another. Any conveyance suits them—an animal, a bale of hay, a ship, automobile, ox airplane^ or just the winds that scud over land and sea. Here is a small part of the story of the world's craftiest and most dangerous stowaways. As FAR BACK as the days of Pliny in the first century, and prob- ably long before, horses, cows, sheep, goats, dogs, and chickens were known to be infested with fleas, bots, and lice. Until the white man arrived in America not one of these animals had been present on this continent for a long time, with the possible exception of the dog. It is natural to assume therefore that all of the specific para- sites that take so large an annual toll of our domestic animals were brought to the Western Hemisphere along with their hosts. In the geological past, long before even the most remote historical periods, the American Continent was well supplied with ungulates, or hoofed animals. A great many species of wild horses were well established over much of the country, and elephants and camels were then indigenous. The hoofed animals disappeared during the early Quaternary geological period, estimated at a million years ago. The stony records of paleontology disclose a remarkable and interesting coincidence. Attia1 Received: 3 December 2019 /Accepted: 19 June 2020 / Published online: 14 July 2020 # African Association of Insect Scientists 2020 Abstract Rhinoestrus purpureus and Rhinoestrus usbekistanicus (Diptera: Oestridae) cause specific nasal myiases of family equidae and are of importance in the horse medicine since it causes severe respiratory diseases. During an epidemiological survey in donkeys from Beni Suef government, Egypt; some morphological and taxonomical doubts arose concerning the identification of Rhinoestrus spp. 1st, 2nd and 3rd stage larvae based on the features of the posterior spiracles and the distribution of dorsal spines on the third segment. Four different morphotypes were retrieved: R. usbekistanicus, R. purpureus and two morphotypes with shared features. The genes encoding for the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and for the ribosomal subunits 16S and 28S of the four morphotypes of Rhinoestrus were investigated to determine whether they belonged to a single taxon or they displayed genetic differences indicative of more than one species. The genes showed a very low level of sequence variation (COI 0–0.43%, 16S 0–1.45%, 28S 0–0.23%) falling within the intraspecific ranges. Finally, the peritreme features and the spinulation of the third segment of the two morphotypes examined could not be used to differentiate the Rhinoestrus spp. Keywords Rhinoestrus purpureus . The antennae of five out of eight species ofGasterophilus Leach (G. haemorrhoidalis (Linnaeus), G. intestinalis (De Geer), G. nasalis (Linnaeus), G. nigricornis (Loew) and G. pecorum (Fabricius)), were examined using scanning electron microscopy. The general morphology, including distribution, type, size, and ultrastructure of antennal sensilla were presented, and the definition of auriculate sensilla and sensory pits were updated and clarified. Eighteen antennal characters were selected to construct the first species-level phylogeny of this genus. The monophyly of Gasterophilus was supported by the presence of coeloconic sensilla III on the antennal arista. The species-level cladogram showed G. pecorum branching off at the base, and the remaining species forming the topology (G. intestinalis+ (G. haemorrhoidalis+ (G. nasalis+ G. nigricornis))). Our research shows the importance of the antennal ultrastructure as a reliable source for phylogenetic analysis. Morphology is an indispensable and near-unlimited source for the study of dipteran systematics and evolution. While molecular techniques have gained much popularity in phylogenetic analyses, morphologists continue to apply novel morphological characters to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships of Diptera1–3. This is especially evident for small and complex structures that are difficult to investigate by traditional methods such as light microscopy4.
