That i;> where Paul played most of his youhg soccer. He graduated from Walnut HS and then went on to play at UCLA winning the first of three NCAA championships in 1985. Currently, Paul is a defender with the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team and has announced his retirement at the end of this season in order to become the head men's and women's soccer coach at Cal Poly Pomona next year. Paul has been a pioneer on a number of fronts for US soccer ov~r the years. He has had the longest career span of any player (1984-97) with the U.S. Men's National Team program, appearing in 110 matches. In 1987, he played in his first FIFA World All-Star Match, one of four, which was considered unheard of as a college player at the time. Sigi Schmid, coach of the Galaxy and Paul's college coach at UCLA, has said "Paul was the best athlete that I have ever coached, equally adapt at using both feet". He is probably best known for "The shot Heard round the World" on November 19, 1989, lofting a 30-yard, left-footed shot that curled inside the far post past Trinidad & Tobago goalkeeper Michael Maurice. The 31st minute goal in Port of Spain, Trinidad stood up for the 1-0 victory and qualified the United States for its first World Cup in 50 years. That appearance allowed the U.S . to host the 1994 World Cup which was a major stepping stone to launching major League Soccer in 1996. Besides the years with the Galaxy, he has spent many years abroad, one of the first Americans to do so, playing in Germany in a number of premiere division leagues. Paul will be honored by the fans of soccer at the September 1, 2001, Galaxy, Colorado Rapids game at the Rose Bowl. It will be "Paul Caligiuri Night". We are pleased that we can also honor Paul and his family as our 2001 Grand Marshall. Miss 4th of July Bianca Gutierrez I am very proud to have the opportunity to represent Hacienda Heights. I am a graduated Senior from La Puente High School, in which I spent my best years. I am involved in community programs which have helped me grow as a person. I love working with the young and old. I am an outgoing person and love to try new things. I strongly believe in being positive. If you are positive, things will go your way. Reach your goals with faith and hope. Never give up, even when things get tough. My goal is to work with children; giving them support and hope to make their dreams come true, to give them help when they need it, and to put smiles on their faces. I want to be a role model, teaching them things that I have learned, giving back instead of receiving. I also wish to be independent and responsible, and to get through life on the right path, making my parents proud in what I accomplish. I am thankful for this opportunity to represent my country to the best of my abilities. I am proud of those who sacraficed it all to make this country free, who had the courage to fight and never give up. Because of them, we are independent, free, and proud to be Americans. We celebrate the Fourth of July with pride and dignity. Thank you for giving me the opportunity of being Miss Fourth of July. May I represent this community and America with Pride and Honor.
