INTEGER POINTS ON SPHERES AND THEIR ORTHOGONAL LATTICES MENNY AKA, MANFRED EINSIEDLER, AND URI SHAPIRA (WITH AN APPENDIX BY RUIXIANG ZHANG) Abstract. Linnik proved in the late 1950’s the equidistribution of in- teger points on large spheres under a congruence condition. The congru- ence condition was lifted in 1988 by Duke (building on a break-through by Iwaniec) using completely different techniques. We conjecture that this equidistribution result also extends to the pairs consisting of a vector on the sphere and the shape of the lattice in its orthogonal complement. We use a joining result for higher rank diagonalizable actions to obtain this conjecture under an additional congruence condition. 1. Introduction A theorem of Legendre, whose complete proof was given by Gauss in [Gau86], asserts that an integer D can be written as a sum of three squares if and only if D is not of the form 4m(8k + 7) for some m, k N. Enhancing Self-Reflection and Mathematics Achievement of At-Risk Urban Technical College Students

Zimmerman1, Adam Moylan2, John Hudesman3, Niesha White3, & Bert Flugman3 Abstract A classroom-based intervention study sought to help struggling learners respond to their academic grades in math as sources of self-regulated learning (SRL) rather than as indices of personal limita- tion. Technical college students (N = 496) in developmental (remedial) math or introductory col- lege-level math courses were randomly assigned to receive SRL instruction or conventional in- struction (control) in their respective courses. SRL instruction was hypothesized to improve stu- dents’ math achievement by showing them how to self-reflect (i.e., self-assess and adapt to aca- demic quiz outcomes) more effectively. The results indicated that students receiving self-reflection training outperformed students in the control group on instructor-developed examinations and were better calibrated in their task-specific self-efficacy beliefs before solving problems and in their self- evaluative judgments after solving problems. Self-reflection training also increased students’ pass- rate on a national gateway examination in mathematics by 25% in comparison to that of control students. Reflection Invariant and Symmetry Detection
1 Reflection Invariant and Symmetry Detection Erbo Li and Hua Li Abstract—Symmetry detection and discrimination are of fundamental meaning in science, technology, and engineering. This paper introduces reflection invariants and defines the directional moments(DMs) to detect symmetry for shape analysis and object recognition. And it demonstrates that detection of reflection symmetry can be done in a simple way by solving a trigonometric system derived from the DMs, and discrimination of reflection symmetry can be achieved by application of the reflection invariants in 2D and 3D. Rotation symmetry can also be determined based on that. Also, if none of reflection invariants is equal to zero, then there is no symmetry. And the experiments in 2D and 3D show that all the reflection lines or planes can be deterministically found using DMs up to order six. Chapter 5 Theory of Angular Momentum and Spin Rotational symmetry transformations, the group SO(3) of the associated rotation matrices and the 1 corresponding transformation matrices of spin{ 2 states forming the group SU(2) occupy a very important position in physics. The reason is that these transformations and groups are closely tied to the properties of elementary particles, the building blocks of matter, but also to the properties of composite systems. Examples of the latter with particularly simple transformation properties are closed shell atoms, e.g., helium, neon, argon, the magic number nuclei like carbon, or the proton and the neutron made up of three quarks, all composite systems which appear spherical as far as their charge distribution is concerned. In this section we want to investigate how elementary and composite systems are described. To develop a systematic description of rotational properties of composite quantum systems the consideration of rotational transformations is the best starting point. As an illustration we will consider first rotational transformations acting on vectors ~r in 3-dimensional space, i.e., ~r R3, 2 we will then consider transformations of wavefunctions (~r) of single particles in R3, and finally N transformations of products of wavefunctions like j(~rj) which represent a system of N (spin- Qj=1 zero) particles in R3. We will also review below the well-known fact that spin states under rotations behave essentially identical to angular momentum states, i.e., we will find that the algebraic properties of operators governing spatial and spin rotation are identical and that the results derived for products of angular momentum states can be applied to products of spin states or a combination of angular momentum and spin states. -

For example the matrix rotates points in the xy -Cartesian plane counterclockwise through an angle θ about the origin of the Cartesian coordinate system. To perform the rotation, the position of each point must be represented by a column vector v, containing the coordinates of the point. A rotated vector is obtained by using the matrix multiplication Rv (see below for details). In two and three dimensions, rotation matrices are among the simplest algebraic descriptions of rotations, and are used extensively for computations in geometry, physics, and computer graphics. Though most applications involve rotations in two or three dimensions, rotation matrices can be defined for n-dimensional space. Rotation matrices are always square, with real entries. Algebraically, a rotation matrix in n-dimensions is a n × n special orthogonal matrix, i.e. an orthogonal matrix whose determinant is 1: . Matrix Lie groups and their Lie algebras Alen Alexanderian∗ Abstract We discuss matrix Lie groups and their corresponding Lie algebras. Some common examples are provided for purpose of illustration. 1 Introduction The goal of these brief note is to provide a quick introduction to matrix Lie groups which are a special class of abstract Lie groups. Study of matrix Lie groups is a fruitful endeavor which allows one an entry to theory of Lie groups without requiring knowl- edge of differential topology. After all, most interesting Lie groups turn out to be matrix groups anyway. An abstract Lie group is defined to be a group which is also a smooth manifold, where the group operations of multiplication and inversion are also smooth. We provide a much simple definition for a matrix Lie group in Section 4. Showing that a matrix Lie group is in fact a Lie group is discussed in standard texts such as [2]. We also discuss Lie algebras [1], and the computation of the Lie algebra of a Lie group in Section 5. We will compute the Lie algebras of several well known Lie groups in that section for the purpose of illustration. 2 Notation Let V be a vector space. Students show that reflections share some of the same fundamental properties with translations (e.g., lines map to lines, angle- and distance-preserving motion). Students know that reflections map parallel lines to parallel lines. Students know that for the reflection across a line 퐿 and for every point 푃 not on 퐿, 퐿 is the bisector of the segment joining 푃 to its reflected image 푃′.
