In four short years, the 2022 World Cup will open in Qatar! Qatar’s plans for its World Cup tournament to be family-friendly, groundbreaking, forward-thinking, and unique. Here are four quick facts about Qatar’s World Cup:

1. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar is projected to generate $10 billion in investment in U.S. companies.

2. Qatar is the first Middle Eastern country to host a World Cup. Qatar is working hard to ensure every detail of the tournament is family friendly, such as easing the transportation methods between stadiums to allow fans to view multiple games a day, and organizing tournaments during a time of year when Qatar experiences cool temperatures.

3. Qatar has implemented labor reforms to responsibly develop World Cup infrastructure at breakneck speed, including three (1,2, 3) worker protection laws since 2015, opening an International Labor Organization office in Qatar, and hiring an independent consultancy to issue public reports on the 2022 World Cup’s worker welfare compliance.

4. The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy established the Challenge 22 program which gives awards to innovative designers for creative and cost-effective technologies that promote sustainable energy and water solutions. The Supreme Committee’s Engagement team has worked hard to ensure that facilities will not only enhance each World Cup fan’s visit but will also create a positive lasting impact on the community.

Here’s a short video showing the progress Qatar has already made in its stadiums:

On May 20th, 2019, Fatma A1 Nuaimi, the Communications Director for Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), held an interview with Goal about the pioneering features of the upcoming 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

w. To clarify, the SC is an institutional entity mandated to oversee, monitor and deliver all the projects for and relevant to the mega-event. In-tandem, this body actualizes various legacy programs: it uses the mega ◄ event as a catalyst for social and economic i development, thus complimenting the objectives enumerated in Qatar National Vision 2030.

Fatma A1 Nuaimi asserted that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be an innovative one: there will be tangible Fatima Al-Nuaimi and intangible benefits.

Firstly, Fatma A1 Nuaimi detailed a concrete tangible benefit or advancement with the new cooling technology that was installed in A1 Wakrah stadium. In fact, the SC representative stated the following:

“We have been successful in making innovations in two fields. Firstly, the cooling technology’ - as one will witness when the weather is hot outside. But inside the stadium, during the match, the atmosphere and experience will be very pleasant.

Furthermore, the representative mentioned the long-term benefits of this technology by stating the following:

“The cooling technology and the cooling helmets for the workers are innovations that the state of Qatar has invested in. These are something which can be a legacy for countries who have the same atmosphere and climate for mega-events, sporting or otherwise they want to host even beyond the 2022 World Cup. This could be a transfer of knowledge that we could give out”

The SC representative detailed the following on Challenge 22 initiative:

“In Challenge 22, people submitted their ideas and the winning idea got a grant of USD 100,000. On May 16th, for the 2019 Amir Cup Final, 22 children from the Qatar Foundation Disability Football Programme and the Qatar Rehabilitation Institute - joined by their parents - watched the game from the comfort of the new sensory room at A1 Janoub Stadium. The room provides a safe place to people with autism and other neurobehavioral conditions. The new sensory room is equipped with bubble tubes, beanbags, a ball pen, and also includes relaxing wall and ceiling projections.

“We are committed to promoting accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities in all aspects of life in Qatar, including working together to reach the vision of a fully accessible World Cup. The QRI has provided a range of specialist sensory equipment for the sensory room which is now available in the stadium for children and adults who have conditions such as attention deficits, autism and head injuries. The room enables users to watch the matches under the supervision of an expert occupational therapist in a nurturing, client-centered sensory supportive environment.” - Sultan A1 Abdulla, QRI’s Chief of Occupational Therapy.

A1 Janoub Stadium and the Khalifa International Stadium are both offering these sensory rooms. Both of them will offer this amazing experience to supporters during the 2022 World Cup.

November 21st marked the three-year mark before Qatar hosts the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The Secretary- General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (S.C.), H.E. Hassan A1 Thawadi, said during an interview that the preparations are now in foil swing. In preparation for the event, Qatar will gain valuable experience by hosting the two upcoming sporting events (the Arabian Gulf Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup) before the year’s end.

The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy is tasked with overseeing all facets involved with the completion of the venues, infrastructure, and operations of the World Cup.

Secretary-General Al-Thawadi stated that two out of the eight stadiums are folly functional and that by midyear 2020 three more stadiums will be folly operational. All eight stadiums are expected to be ready by the end of 2021. Qatar’s national infrastructure plan is also on schedule, with the Doha Metro Red Line expected to be folly operational by the end of 2019 and the entire multi-line system to be completed within the first six months of next year. The Arabian Gulf Cup and FIFA Club World Cup will serve as dry runs for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. These events will allow S.C. to assess its preparedness in areas such as crowd control and fan experience to see where they are performing well and where further improvement is needed.

The SC is looking beyond just keeping development on schedule and getting a couple of trials. Secretary- General Al Thawadi also aims to breakdown stereotypes of the Arab world and further educate visitors on Qatari values and culture.

“In terms of the first World Cup in the Middle East and Islamic world, I believe the legacy this World Cup will leave is huge.”

“First of all, we ’re looking at building bridges. There’s no platform in the world today that brings people together like football -and in particular the World Cup - where people on a human A to human level can build a very close relationship, can get rid of stereotypes, can appreciate the differences between us in terms of culture and backgrounds, but can nevertheless get together as human beings and as football fans as well.”

- H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy Received by NSD/FARA Registration Unit 05/29/2020 11:21:13 AM https://qataramerica.org/qatar-wants-more-than-just-to-host-world-cup/[5/4/2020 11:18:24 AM] Qatar Wants More Than Just To Host World Cup | Qatar-Arnerica Institute Received by NSD/FARA Registration Unit 05/29/2020 11:21:13 AM

Secretary-General A1 Thawadi pointed out that the World Cup has advanced and refined Qatar’s policies on four main fronts; economic development, human development, social development, and environmental development (the four pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030). Qatar has also taken large strides in improving migrant rights through the Workers’ Welfare reform and established programs such as Generation Amazing that uses soccer as a sport to help develop leadership and life skills for youth in underprivileged areas.

Additionally, Qatar has taken the impact of climate change into consideration as it prepares for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. An aspect of this policy is the creation of a solar farm that will play in making the 2022 World Cup the first carbon-neutral World Cup in history.

“My message to the millions of fans that are l looking to come to Qatar in 2022: welcome to Qatar, welcome to the Middle East. We’re excited to host you, we’re excited to welcome you and for all of us to celebrate the greatest sport on earth and the greatest e\’ent on earth.”

The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar is rapidly approaching, and the county’s preparations are in full swing. Hassan A1 Thawadi, the Secretary-General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), updated the audience at Qatar Foundation’s (QF) Speaker Series (ECSS). A1 Thawadi informed audience members that three stadiums are due to be completed in 2020, before Qatar hosts the FIFA Club World Cup again after doing so in December 2019.

As of now, two stadiums have been inaugurated (The Khalifa International Stadium and The A1 Janoub Stadium). He stated that “three more stadiums are expected to become operational by the end of this year: A1 Rayyan Stadium, A1 Bayt Stadium, and, of course, - which is close to everybody’s hearts here at QF.

He went on to state that “we will The A1 Janoub Stadium also be hosting the FIFA Club World Cup again - which is another significant milestone for us. Last year’s event was a great success, and we were able to test our readiness for 2022. It was a golden opportunity to run through our concepts and put our operational plans to the test.”

A1 Thawadi also touched on innovation and legacy is the focus of Qatar’s 2022 world cup: “Every tournament has to have a unique, innovative element to make it close to people’s hearts. For us, innovation is at the core of our preparations. We want to provide the most advanced, enhanced, and engaging fan experience for people from Qatar and all over the world. And we continue to work closely with Qatar Foundation on various elements in this regard... we planned for legacy from day one. A lot of host nations, unfortunately, look at legacy as an element that comes after the tournament. From the beginning, we looked at the Qatar National Vision 2030 as a guiding post. We understood the goals required and how the World Cup can help to achieve them.”

Qatar is also preparing for the games by constructing scores of hotels, with innovation as a critical focus. With plenty of coastlines available, developers are building out into the water, rather than on the mainland. Sixteen floating hotels, designed by Finnish architectural firm Sigge Architect and built by real estate construction company Admares, will contain over 1,600 total rooms and remain docked on Qetaifan Island North. The hotels are housed near Lusail Stadium, which will host the opening game and the final of the World Cup.

Mikael Hedburg, the CEO of m.-*f*** Admares Group, stated that “these floating hotels are kind of hybrid buildings as the design solutions n are a mix of marine and landside building technologies.. .The A rendering of the proposed hotel rooms by Admares Construction Company [Image Courtesy of Admares] structure is made out of steel and is built according to marine regulations.”

Another added benefit is that the floating hotels will be able to be reused after the World Cup. Due to the thoughtfully chosen materials, marine hotels are expected to be used for at least 50 years.

He went on to discuss the environmental benefits that stem from using floating hotels rather than employing traditional construction practices. He stated that “the benefit of floating hotels compared to permanent landside buildings is the fact that they can be constructed in a controlled production environment and then delivered to the final location 100 percent completed. There is no need to create a traditional construction site, which often is a burden for the environment. Additionally, these floating hotels can be relocated to any other coastal location in the world after the World Cup.”

Yet, not much is known about Qatar’s sustainability strategy within the general public.

The three primary partners responsible for delivering the 2022 World Cup in Qatar are FIFA, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC, and the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy. The tournament will be held from November 21st to December 18th in 2022. The event will feature a total of 32 teams, eight stadiums, and consist of a budget of 8 billion dollars.

As part of the overall vision that Qatar has for the 2022 World Cup, one of the most important pillars is that of Sustainability. The Pillar of Sustainability consists of several significant f points. Some of the most relevant aspects are the following - gain sustainable building certification for stadiums and offices; sustainable building practices; sustainable procurement and disposal of construction materials; and overall reduction and minimization of greenhouse gas emissions.

Construction Site at one of the stadiums under Much of the infrastructure currently under construction for the 2022 FIFA World Cup construction employs highly energy-efficient design from air conditioning and ventilation, lighting, and wastewater recovery systems. During development, “in some cases, over 90% of construction waste is recycled and reused.

Greenhouse gas emissions are also prioritized throughout the construction phase, tournament operations, and post-tournament phases. Within the construction phase, regional material is primarily employed for construction to reduce fossil fuel waste preventing materials from traveling long distances. Materials discarded during construction are reused and recycled, and local biodiversity is given the utmost consideration to avoid disruptions in the surrounding natural enviromnent.

In addition to these measures, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy is managing one of the largest tree nurseries in the region. As construction of the stadiums comes to completion, over 5000 trees will be planted, covering 850,000 square meters of land, allowing for the absorption of thousands of tons of carbon from the atmosphere. Furthermore, a public transportation system will allow for the free transfer of tournament fans as they shuffle from one stadium to another, back to their hotel room, and travel through the city. Lastly, temporary power solutions are being employed to minimize impact and reduce waste from the overall power grid. m March 20, 2ofteceA^M,WTARA Registration Unit 05/29/2020 11:21:13 AM f # in t © hi Qatar’s 10th edition of Qatar International Food Festival (QIFF), which is the country’s longest-running multicultural event, begins today. QIFF will take place at Oxygen Park in Qatar’s Foundation's Education city from March 20th until March 30th.

For this year’s occasion, there will be over 150 F&B stalls situated over 3 main areas: 1) main course specialties; 2) kids-ffiendly foods and activities; 3) cafes and light food. The event will also include private seating areas with pre-set menus, luxury culinary experiences, and will be accompanied by cultural and gastronomic shows/exhibitions.

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, QIFF will be hosting approximately 30 international and local celebrity chefs from 14 different countries. The chefs will be demonstrating their culinary expertise and knowledge via live cooking shows and demonstrations. For instance, on March 23rd, famous Japanese Chef, Masaharu Morimoto, will be conducting a cooking Masterclass for the occasion.

Rashed Al-Qurese, a member of Qatar National Tourism Council, stated the following about the upcoming food festival:

We are excited to launch this year’s edition of QIFF with the support of our partners and celebrate the success of this decade-long food tradition that continues to attract celebrity chefs, food-lovers, F&B entrepreneurs, and so many members of Qatar’s diverse community.

The food festival will not be confined within Oxygen Park: more than 35 designated restaurants and cafes will be offering special food menus at discounted prices. This will allow locals and those not attending the event at Oxygen Park to experience and enjoy the overall culinary festivity.

In collaboration with Qatar Foundation, QIFF will be promoting food and nutrition awareness programs for students from 50 schools across Qatar. Therefore, other than being an opportunity to refine one’s palate, the food festival will incorporate educational elements to attract and educate younger segments of Qatar’s society.

Lastly, the QIFF will also entail an opportunity for small and medium entrepreneurs to introduce their innovative products and provide the space for local farms to offer their produce. In fact, QIFF has dedicated 15% of it spaces to nascent entrepreneurs and/or local SMEs.

The Qatar-America Institute was represented at the International Forum of the America’s, appearing on the panel Envisioning the Cities of the Future. A Summary of QAI’s Remarks

Qatar experienced an energy-driven economic boom that at one point made it the world’s fastest-growing country in the world, and made available the infrastructure that today makes it the largest exporter of liquified natural gas in the world - with 30% of global market share in that commodity - and with less than four years until it becomes the first country in the Middle East to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022.

This boom was of course enabled by hydrocarbon exports, but Qatar has built sustainability into the National Vision 2030 that was adopted as far back as 2008. That Vision has cascaded through to initiatives ranging from hosting the 2012 Conference of Parties - also known as COP 18 - that was an important milestone in concluding the Paris Agreement in 2015 (COP 21), all the way to efforts to ensure that 2022 will be the first ever carbon-neutral edition of the FIFA World Cup.

These events have acted as catalysts for sustainable management, including a drive to rationalize the consumption of water and electricity by the residents of Qatar through more realistic pricing mechanisms. That campaign is known as Tarsheed, which is for rationalization of resources. Tarsheed has succeeded in reducing harmful carbon emissions by about 5 million tons since its launch in 2012, due to the reduction in per capita consumption of electricity and water.

Food Security in Qatar has gone hand-in-hand with water conservation. The national plan for food and water security has enacted policies that have discontinued by law the practice of aquifer depletion for agriculture and incentivized the adoption of greenhouse and hydroponics technology to locally grow fruits and vegetables

On February 25th, 2020, the Qatar-America Institute (QAI), in partnership with the Doha Film Institute (DFI), hosted a film screening at the Tribeca Film Center in New York City. The event celebrated DFI’s work in championing emerging filmmaking talent in Qatar and the MENA region. The event saw a screening of the Short Cuts to Qatar program, a series of seven short films made by Qatar-based filmmakers. Several of the films screened were recipients of support from DFI’s grants program, which provides development, production, and postproduction funding to domestic and international filmmakers.

The genres of the films ranged from animation to documentary. They displayed the creative talent of young filmmakers as they grappled, through their art, portraying the everyday lives, struggles, and triumphs of the Middle East’s youth-dominated societies.

The following films were part of the screening: Maha’ Mel (Ships) by Dhabya Al-Muhannadi; The Unlucky Hamster by Abdu/aziz Khashabi; I Am Not My Father by Naif Hassan Al-Malki; A Voyager by Khalifa Al-Marri; Nasser Goes to Space by Mohammed Al-Mahmeed; Revive the Lira’s Glory by Alessandra El Chanti; Socotra by Ching Siew Hua.

Following the screening, QAI hosted a brief discussion with Alessandra El Chanti, who X directed the short film “Revive the Lira’s Glory.” The film, centered around the work of a Lebanese artist, Ibrahim Sultani, captured the nature of both the economic and sectarian crisis gripping Lebanon. Sultani, rather than focusing on contemporary political figures, paints portraits of Lebanese icons on banknotes.

El Chanti, who pursued her undergraduate studies at Northwestern University in Qatar, is currently a candidate for the Masters of Fine Arts at Northwestern’s Illinois campus. As a student trained and submerged in the universal language of film, El Chanti embodies the educational and cultural exchange that QAI takes as its mission to highlight and celebrate.

Professor Nurhaizatul Jamil, Assistant Professor in Global South Studies and the co-director of the Social Media Lab at The Pratt Institute, moderated the Q&A session with El Chanti and the audience. At Pratt, Professor Jamil teaches classes on Women in the , Middle Eastern communities and cultures, decolonizing methodologies, and fashion and sustainability studies. Her current research examines the entanglements between modest fashion and sustainability within Muslim communities.

Several of the films screened appeared in the 2019 edition of the Ajyal Film Festival, DFI’s marquee annual film festival. ‘Ajyal,’ Arabic for ‘generations,’ brings people of all ages together through screenings and events Received by NSD/FARA Registration Unit 05/29/2020 11:21:13 AM https://qataramerica.Org/qai-biings-short-ciits-to-qatar-to-new-york/f5/4/2020 12:58:24 PM] QAI brings "Short Cuts to Qatar" to New York | Qatar-Ainerica Institute Received by NSD/FARA Registration Unit 05/29/2020 11:21:13 AM * that inspire creative interaction and stimulate cinematic dialogue. QAI was honored to help bring a tlavor of Ajyal to New York City, showcasing DFI’s efforts to encourage the growth of storytelling through the medium of film in the region and the world. Qumra is an annual initiative that offers mentorship and practical development experience, via its Qumra Master Classes, for filmmakers from Qatar and around the world. Internationally accredited professionals in the film industry teach the Qumra Master Classes. Qumra 2019 ran for five days, from March 15th to March 20th. The * program included an array of public screenings and events. The featured selections were films produced by Qumra Masters and by the recipients of DFI’s grants programs. The New York screening of the Short Cuts to Qatar program was made possible by the generous support of the Qatar National Tourism Council, which is curating Qatar as the Middle East’s destination of choice for leisure and business travelers.

Qatar Airways is offering a 25% discount on flights to those who expect to visit Qatar through Hamad International Airport, until mid-August. The partnership is also offering a 25% discount for those interested in “meet & greet” services.

However, passengers are still able to take advantage of multiple deals if they happen to have a layover in Qatar. Qatar has greatly simplified passengers’ abilities to see what the country has to offer.

As an effort to boost tourism, a transit visa has been instituted that allows passengers that have a layover longer than 5 hours, to receive a 96 hour transit visa. Qatar Airways has taken advantage of this development and instituted a stopover package that would provide discounted hotel rates.

Qatar continues to become a cultural hub of the Middle East and actively supports the creation of institutions and public artworks, with most recently unveiling the iconic Qatar National Museum. The nation also offers a host of other museums and cultural attractions for those interested in experiencing a Middle East Gulf nation that has struck a balance between modernity and tradition.

The Qatar-America Institute (QAI) has launched a new initiative, the Expert Voices Series. The initiative is envisioned as a medium for encouraging broader and more diverse conversations between Qatari experts and/or experts on Qatar with U.S.-based leaders in business, academia and politics.

In an effort to diversify outreach beyond the traditional East Coast hubs of Washington, D.C. and New York, QAI sought to initiate new channels of engagement with the key West Coast hubs of San Francisco and Los Angeles. With a population of 39.5 million and a GDP of $2.7 trillion - the fifth largest economy in the world - California (CA) was QAEs natural choice for a first foray to the West Coast. The state boasts some of the world’s premier academic institutions and science labs, as well as America’s motion picture industry (Hollywood).

Silicon Valley in California’s Bay Area is the global capital for hi-tech innovation and entrepreneurship; the co- location of a critical mass of venture capital investors and a talent pool of unparalleled depth and quality has produced some of the world’s most valuable companies. California’s industrial origins in defense and aerospace remain integral to the state’s research and development (R&D) nexus and economic export composition.

Dr. Khalid Al-Ali - Qatari Tech Entrepreneur and Former NASA Specialist

The first participant in QAI’s Expert Voices Series was Dr. Khalid Al-Ali, a Qatari technology entrepreneur and Co-Founder and Executive Chainnan of Senseta, a Silicon Valley-based data analytics firm.

In the field of aeronautics and exploration technology, Dr. Al-Ali spent 10 years in NASA’s Ames Research Center and Jet Propulsion Laboratories. Dr. Al-Ali was also the CEO of the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP), Qatar’s premier business “free zone” dedicated to the development of market-ready tech products

Having earned his PhD at UC Berkeley and worked at NASA and DARPA-administered labs, Dr. Al-Ali has made California his second home both professionally and personally. He is uniquely well positioned to provide a nuanced outlook of promising and fertile areas of collaboration between Qatari entities and the State of California.

Stanford University

QAI hosted Dr. Al-Ali in Northern California, where he featured as a speaker on a panel, “Technology Trends Received by NSD/FARA Registration Unit 05/29/2020 11:21:13 AM https://qataramerica.org/qatar-and-califomia-partners-in-advancement/[5/4/2020 12:55:12 PM] Qatar and California: Partners in Advancement | Qatar-America Institute in Emerging M^f^<5%52P?8 firm, which

has created knowledge-intensive jobs in both Silicon Valley and Doha, Dr. Al-Ali spoke about Qatar’s commitment to increasing its GDP contribution to R&D that forms the basis of commercially successful tech- enabled products.

On the panel. Dr. Al-Ali spoke about his experience leading the complex negotiations that brought two of the seven U.S. universities that have established full degree-granting campuses in Doha’s Education City. With his appointment as the first CEO of QSTP, he spoke of the vision to “capture the intellectual property from the academic institutions and providing a finance bridge from QSTP to create value from knowledge.” Dr. Al-Ali spoke of his leadership role on national steering committees that have shaped Qatar’s technology policy and articulated Qatar’s vision of integrating its industry with the research and higher education infrastructure that it has been investing massive resources to develop.

On the sidelines of the Stanford MENA Forum, Dr. Al-Ali held meetings with Research Fellows at the Hoover Institution, a leading American think tank, to discuss potential partnerships between Hoover Fellows and research institutes in Qatar, such as the Qatar Computing Research Institute and the Qatari Energy and Environment Institute.

Similar consultations were held with Distinguished Fellows at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Affairs, with a specific focus on food security and energy markets and with the Stanford’s Program on Energy and Sustainable Development.

UCLA

UCLA’s Center for Middle East Development (CMED) hosted QAI and Dr. Al-Ali at the university’s Faculty Club for discussions that will reinforce UCLA’s already deep ties with Qatar. CMED is UCLA’s dedicated center for Middle East expertise and, for many years, has partnered with Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to host an annual conference in Qatar under the banner of “Enriching the Economic Future of the Middle East.”

RAND Corporation Santa Monica

At the RAND Corporation’s Santa Monica headquarters, Dr. Al-Ali gave remarks on “Qatar’s Economic Diversification and Tech/Innovation Policy” to a select group of researchers, followed by an engaging Q&A session under Chatham House rules. He highlighted the nexus approach of linking Qatar’s universities with government-backed funding mechanisms, such as Qatar Development Bank (QDB) and QSTP. He emphasized that enabling the private sector through access to credit and business incubators will facilitate the creation of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that will help Qatar diversify its economy away from hydrocarbons.

Though the RAND Corporation no longer maintains an office in Doha, it remains an important strategic partner

Larta Institute

The Larta Institute defines itself as providing a “mesh network” of mentorship resources, expertise, funding and connections to patient capital. In that sense, Larta is an Institute and not in the mold of traditional Bay Area “accelerators” that tend to be a source of one-time funding, office space for a limited time, and a scattered feedback loop.

Larta recognizes the fiercely competitive space of emerging technology start-ups and instead seeks to support nascent tech companies in every step of their lab to market transition. This starts with pairing companies with Principal Advisors who are experienced practitioners in both academia and industry. Larta is organized around the four pillars of Feed, Fuel, Heal and Innovation, with long-standing partnerships with the federal research funding arms of the National Institute of Health, Department of Energy and United States Department of Agriculture.

QAI and Dr. Ali had a very positive meeting with the Larta leadership. QAI expressed enthusiasm for converging some of Larta’s internationally renowned experience with Qatar’s efforts to cultivate its own organic “mesh network” of business enablers. This will help advance the Qatar National Vision 2030, which prioritizes economic diversification and human capital development.

The Pacific Council on International Policy

The Pacific Council is the West Coast’s premier member-based public diplomacy institute. It has hosted sitting U.S. Secretaries of State, Members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, former presidents, and the list could go on.

The Pacific Council hosted a lunch in their LA headquarters in honor of Dr. Khalid Al-Ali. The lunch was well attended by Pacific Council members who hail from diverse industries: financial services, aviation, law enforcement, defense, academia and literature.

Dr. Al-Ali offered some remarks on Qatar’s journey from seeking partners in the 1960s to finance and provide the technology for a world-leading LNG industry, to its current investment-led boom in human capital development and a sovereign wealth fund with a global and diversified portfolio of assets. Under Chatham House rules, Dr. Al-Ali fielded many thought-provoking questions about Qatar’s role in international affairs, its sporting ambitions and engagement with the U.S.

We are also excited to showcase the strong ties between Qatar and the U.S. through its investments and partnerships in California, In fact, these ties will continue through Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will bring over $10 billion worth of business to U.S. firms, followed by a close handover from 2022 in Qatar to 2026 in the United States.”
