In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as a time to honor all saints and martyrs. He called it Saints’ Day and it incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before Saints’ Day was known as All Hal- lows’ Eve and later was called Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a joyful holiday in- volving sweet treats and smiles. Instead of ’ original purpose of warding off ghosts it's now a giant party. We’d rather have it that way anyways, right?

Spooky Short Stories! By: Rachell Beagley When halloween comes around everyone is decorating and getting ready to celebrate. It only comes around once a year so people all over the world are obsessed with this holiday. Doing things such as decorating, baking, celebrating, visiting gravesites and so much more. Here is a look into some of those stories. Overviewing this topic an interview took place with Skyler Stout. He has had a few very terrifying experiences in the house he lives in. His room is an old storage room. He began to explain to me that he was sitting in his room and he suddenly felt as cold as ice and suddenly the pillow beside him went down. At first it didn't startle him he thought it was his great grandma. Later, he decided that it was not because he got a huge scratch on his arm. He left his room and didn’t come back for several days. He told me a second story later on that he has double wide barn doors on his room. He was sitting on his bed one night with those doors locked. There was no one home his family was on vacation. The doors suddenly slammed open and he left his room and did not come back until his family re- turned...Are you ready for halloween now? Halloween Traditions By Lexi Blackmore This holiday we call “Halloween” is celebrated all over the world. In the late 1800’s Halloween became a holiday in America. It was a get together for neighborhoods to have parties and to tell scary stories. Scary stories were told around a fire about anything paranormal. Halloween is celebrated almost everywhere in America. Kids dress up for school and to show their friends their costumes. In the beginning Halloween was aimed at the older crowd until vandalism spread. Then city leaders tried to keep it to the kids. Trick-or-Treating started to be a big thing, in the beginning of the 1900s. Trick-or-Treating started a bribery to stop kids from playing tricks on the adults. Nearly 6 billion dollars are spent on halloween candy annually.

5 Athletes of the Month

Athletes of the Month By Kelbie Dayley & Adison Ellsworth Our athletes here at Hurricane High are some of the greatest and every month Hurricane has a few ath- letes of the month. This month, we got to interview some of the people who helped nominate the athletes. The two seniors that were chosen to stand under the spotlight are Holland Steglich (Tennis), and Shane Farnsworth (football). Of course we Interviewed Coach Pearson (Head Football Coach) because out of everyone, he would know how Shane is on the field. “Shane works really, really hard”, said Pearson. Shane has been injured a few different times but that doesn’t prevent him from being the player that he is, it only makes him stronger. Coach Pearson obviously sees how hard Shane works through all the obstacles. Pearson stated, “He’s a good leader and a tough kid. He has played through lots of bumps and bruises this season”.

Holland Steglich is one of the few senior athletes that played tennis this year and trust me she has had quite the journey. Sophomore year, she tore her ACL in basketball, which could have prevented her from reaching her full potential with tennis, at first. With hard work and dedication she pushed through and made it back to the top. Steglich definitely made a comeback this season. Her junior year she played doubles with Rachael Morgan, trying to work her way back to normal. This year she has improved and risen above all expectations. One of the teammates Holland played doubles with was Candice Gubler and she explained to us how it was having Steglich as a teammate. Gubler Said, “When we played doubles sophomore year, we took third at state. In that game, we lost in two tie breakers, or we could have taken state.” She continued, “It made us grow closer together as friends by losing.” Candice and Holland are Co-Captains together this year.

These two athletes, Shane and Holland, are going to be playing their last games/matches this year, due to their senior year. Not only have Farnsworth and Steglich gotten better at their sport, but have created bonds between teammates and coaches that will never be broken.
