Meanwhile, “Jack Skellington’s Villainous Gathering” will see an assortment of Disney Villains taking over the Castle Hub Stage and use the power of music to spread their evil influences. “Mickey’s Halloween Time Street Party!” is also returning this year, along with a wide range of Halloween activities for guests of all ages. With non-stop supernatural fun and music offerings awaiting guests at HKDL, Hong Kong residents can now double up on their time at the park by taking advantage of the exclusive “Double the Fun” promotion*, to enjoy Halloween two different days for just HK$688! Only at HKDL – Disney Villains take over at the world’s first “Let’s Get Wicked” Halloween musical stage show! “Let’s Get Wicked” is a new 25-minute musical stage show created for HKDL guests. This limited-time Halloween offering is the world’s first to feature live performances from five iconic Disney Villains – Ursula from The Little Mermaid, Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians, Dr. Facilier from The Princess and the Frog, Gaston from Beauty and the Beast and Mother Gothel from Tangled. As a true celebration of music, guests will be immersed in a wide array of musical styles throughout the show, such as Broadway, pop, rock and tango. An original number, “Let’s Get Wicked,” was created exclusively for the show, while the signature songs of all five Disney Villains have been exquisitely re-arranged to incorporate new musical styles, instantly transporting guests on an unforgettable musical journey! The new designs of the Disney Villains’ costumes are heavily inspired by their stories and wicked characteristics, helping to bring the Villains to life in never-before-seen ways, including the use of special effects and choreography. For example, Ursula’s colossal dress covers the entire stage and mimics underwater movement. The hero of the story, Jack Skellington, ventures across realms to not only develop a sense of himself, but to ultimately bring what he learns from the “otherworld/realm” back to his community. Traversing these worlds brings about the obvious: chaos, destruction, and violence. However, by engaging the shadow aspect of the individual and collective community, Jack embraces this chaos to transform it into hope, togetherness, salvation, and love. By acknowledging, accepting, and addressing the issues of the shadow archetype, Jack begins his development in his quest for individuation and wholeness. Confronting the Oogie Boogie Man, the accumulated manifestation of the shadow, Jack brings order to his personal world and the lives of his community members. This creative film brings an awareness of Carl G. Jung’s shadow archetype to its audience. American culture reflects its shadows through cinema, thus bringing light to the darkness that may consume us all at one point or another in our lives. Learning, as Jack does, to approach our shadows and fears strengthens who we are as individuals, and as a cohesive community.     The Nightmare Before Christmas: ​ A Spooky Movie For All Ages By: Courtney Hauser Tim Burton, known for his gothic writing style, quite possibly hit the jackpot with the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas. The movie follows Jack Skellington, otherwise known ​ ​ as the “Pumpkin King,” after he learns of Christmas. Though it may seem like a Halloween movie at first glance, director Henry Selick did a really good job combining such different holidays. Selick managed to find a perfect balance of keeping it spooky and Christmasy while still being family-friendly. Unlike most PG films, this movie is entertaining to all ages, and definitely worth the watch. The thing that sets this movie apart the most is the animation style: the distinct Tim Burton stop-motion animation. In recent years, stop-motions have been described as a bit underwhelming by movie critics everywhere; however, despite being a stop-motion, the set designers did not disappoint with the background details in this movie. The detail of the “What’s This” scene is insanely impressive with sparkling snow, townspeople running about and Christmas lights everywhere. Three painstaking years of work to animate this movie definitely paid off in the best way possible. My favorite part of the movie, however, is the soundtrack. The movie begins with “This is Halloween,” which, if you haven’t figured it out, is all about Halloween and what makes it so “spooky.” With it’s eerie background music laced with whispers and townspeople from the movie singing their own parts, it helps create the setting and mood of Halloweentown.

It won’t be long before leaves begin to drop and the evenings start to become cool. The Halloween decorations are out already and that can only mean one thing, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas will make its annual run at the El Capitan Theater* in Hollywood. The Nightmare Before Christmas is based on the 1823 poem entitled A Visit from St. Nicholas that first published anonymously, four years later it was attributed to Clement Clarke Moore and it is most commonly known as The Night Before Christmas. It was one of the first times that St. Nickolas was written about in a way that allowed the reader to visualize ‘Santa Claus.’ It is not the first time that a Disney film was based on this poem. In December of 1933, The Walt Disney Studios released its own version of the poem in the fortieth animated Silly Symphony cartoon, The Night Before Christmas. It was a standard rendition of the poem done in a spoken word-like singing style set to music. The actor/singer Donald Novis (1906-1966) was cast for the narrator and he sings part of the Clement Clark Moore poem as a ballad. It was a style of singing that was popular in the 1930s, with one of the more notable singers of the era being tenor Bill Kenny of the group The Ink Spots.
