“The magi, as you know, were wise men—wonderfully wise men—who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones, possibly bearing the privilege of exchange in case of duplication.”

So begins the last paragraph of O. Henry’s And speaking of being connected, I read famous story, “The Gift of the Magi.” It is a recently that Archbishop Desmond Tutu once beautiful story of gift giving. One, I think, that said, “Do your little bit of good where you are; should be read every Christmas before one it's those little bits of good put together that does gift giving. It is about planning and love overwhelm the world.” and sacrifice. And so together let us each in our own way do It is no accident that our editorial team our little bit of good no matter if it be time, talent chose to depict the Magi with an Ursuline or treasure; or prayer, works or suffering so that Sister for the cover of this issue of the Dome, together we can overwhelm the world. because this issue is dedicated to you, the Thanks for being our benefactors of the Ursuline Sisters and our friends and benefactors. ministries. “Faith without works is dead.” James 2:14) by Sr. Janet Marie Peterworth This verse is the driving force behind Charles “Bud” and Barbara (Hagan) Simmons who have shared their time, talent and treasure with the Ursuline Sisters for many years. Both Bud and Barb are products of Catholic education in Louisville. Barb attended Angela Merici High School while Bud went to St. Xavier High School. Barb went on to Bellarmine-Ursuline College, then received her master’s from Western University. Bud attended St. Meinrad and graduated from Indiana University and the . Over the last 30 years, these Ursuline friends have contributed financially in, as Barb put it, “many shapes and sizes to annual funds, capital campaigns, Interludes and various other campus fund drives.” After 28 years Charles “Bud” and Barbara (Hagan) Simmons, longtime volunteers and donors to the Ursuline Sisters of teaching in Catholic elementary schools, Barb taught theology for 20 more years at Sacred Heart Academy. She still substitutes today when she is needed. Bud had a career in the banking industry.

Peruvian Journal: Javier Tenorio

by sr. sue scharfenberger Allow me to introduce you to Javier Tenorio. We and everyone else here call him “Ricce.” In order to get to know Javier, you need to know that he is the son of Dominga Sernaque, a woman who was very active in her parish preparing parents to have their children baptized, working in human rights organizations on the local and national level, and a person who was there whenever help was needed. Javier learned all this and more from his mother. He first sold newspapers with her when he was a little boy and later helped her sell fish in the market. She was the sole provider for a family of eight. From Dominga, Javier learned to work—work hard and find opportunities to make connections and build friendships. He began working in our school after graduation, first by teaching carpentry, a skill he learned in the parish workshops. Then, little by little and winning the confidence of the parents, the principal and other teachers, Javier gained more work hours and a slightly better salary, which he then used to earn a university teacher’s degree.

DOME | WINTER 2017 11 Planned Giving Mary Jean Clephas: A Life of Giving Well Planned by ellen mcknight

Mary Jean Clephas passed away in 2004 in Las Vegas after a full and adventurous life. Notified just recently that the Ursuline Sisters were listed as a beneficiary in her estate plans, her nephew, Marty Reinhart, sent photos and emailed memories that capture the essence of her free spirit. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Mary Jean was Ursuline- influenced early in life. Her sister, Dorothy, was Ursuline Sister Gervase. On a recent phone call Marty explained, “My Aunt Mary Jean’s life was one of independence, service and leadership. She was very successful while at the same time being versatile and entrepreneurial. She never married. She traveled to 30 plus countries and shared her experiences to the delight of all of us.”

A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Mary Jean was Ursuline-influenced early in life. Her sister, Dorothy, was Ursuline Sister Gervase.

The photo montage on the next page shows just how varied her career and interests were. She was an airplane mechanic at Bowman Field in Louisville when WWII began; served in the military as a WAVE and worked at a hospital in San Diego to assist in the rehabilitation of injured troops; and served in the Women’s Ambulance and Defense Corps of America (WADC). After her military duties ended she became a real estate agent, started her own company and built her own house. Mary Jean’s First Communion, 1933 Later she became a certified CPA. A life well lived and well planned seems like an understatement.

In October, Sister Janet Marie Peterworth attended her first meeting as representative of the Ursuline Charism Family on the board of directors of UNANIMA International. The name begins with “UN” to represent the United Nations, and the “ANIMA” is from the Latin word for feminine “spirit” or “life principle.” The U.S. Ursuline Charism Family is made up of independent Ursuline Communities and three U.S. Roman Union Provinces. UNANIMA International describes itself as “a non-governmental organization (NGO) advocating on behalf of women and children (particularly those living in poverty), immigrants and refugees, and the environment.... for systemic change to achieve a more just world. Congratulations to Sister Rita Dressman, the first associate director of the Sacred Heart Preschool on the Ursuline Campus. Sr. Rita was recently honored by the preschool with the gift of a star with her name on it, which will be on the vaulted ceiling of the Cathedral of the Assumption in Louisville. This recognition was presented in conjunction with the celebration of the 50th “Birthday” of the preschool, founded in 1967. Sr. Rita continues to serve in so many ways—including transporting fellow Sisters from Nazareth Home-Clifton several times a year to interact with the preschoolers through art, storytelling, music and more.
