I was greeted by a beautiful chocolate lab when I got off the bus at the Freedom Foundation. The grounds were amazing to tour. I was voted the Chief Supreme Court Justice in the mock trial and at the award ceremony Secretary of the Wisconsin I was give the award of “Most likely to become president”. We toured Philadelphia with Nancy, the best tour guide ever. I’m so thankful I was given the opportunity to go on this Department of Veterans Affairs trip. I would also like to thank everyone for sending hope and prayers when I was ill in late Daniel Zimmerman September. Thank you all for the warm welcomes and I can’t wait to meet many more of you throughout this year. When I was appointed WDVA Secretary by Governor Scott Walker about 21 months ago, I made it clear about the vision I had for our agency and the things we could do together to fulfill our rightful duty of serving the Veterans of Wisconsin and their families. I’m happy to say that through our ability to stay proactive and collaborate with the Veterans community across the state, we’ve been checking things off our list at an incredible rate. It hasn’t been easy; we faced a few challenges at first getting things off the ground. But with the overwhelming support of Veterans Service Organizations like AMVETS, that progress has been made a lot easier. Few states, if any, can say they’ve accomplished the things that we have for Veterans and their families throughout the past year and a half. The WDVA’s legacy functions — our Veterans Homes, Claims Office, Benefits offerings, Cemeteries and Veterans Museum — are all operating at the highest level as we continue looking toward the future and directly addressing the emerging needs of Veterans and their families. Amara was voted as “Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.” We have refocused our efforts with the idea being: Let’s actually do something. No ice bucket or push-up challenges to raise awareness for our Veterans. Instead, let’s physically go out and do something benefitting our nation’s heroes. We did that with our Veterans Outreach and Recovery Program, which recently expanded to all areas of the state following the program’s proven success. The mental health and physical well-being of our Veterans is imperative, and being able to help them get whatever assistance they may need across the state is a huge leap in the right direction. Our Veterans Housing and Recovery Program has expanded to Green Bay so we can further offer life-sustaining services to at-risk Veterans. We realized the needs of at-risk Veterans and are actively helping them re-gain skills to sustain a productive lifestyle in Wisconsin. Our Veterans Home at King is undergoing a huge transformation with a $104 million investment by the WDVA slated to construct Moses Hall, renovate the cemetery across the street and modernize other aspects. We’ve reinvigorated our relationship with the CVSOs and TVSOs across the state. We’ve further engaged the Hmong and Tribal communities in Wisconsin in addition to reaching out and working together with our great colleges and universities. We’ve created and grown our Women Veterans Program and planned numerous events with a precedent being placed on advocating for women Veterans and their families. Not only does Wisconsin lead in benefits offered to Veterans and their families, but we also lead in hiring them. In August, we launched our talent attraction initiative so we can bring Veterans and their families to Wisconsin and physically show them why we are the ideal state for them. But there’s a lot of work left to do, and we’re not done yet. Not even close. We need your continued support as we work to advocate and provide the resources and services our Veterans are asking for. Amara was awarded “Most Likely To Become President.” 4 AMVETS Department of Wisconsin Winter 2018

The Louis Travis Amvets Post #14 honors StorageMart and their employees in appreciation for the American Flag they display on a daily bases. Commander Ken Ricciardi (left) presented the Patriotism Award to Manager Mike Blaze as 2nd Vice Commander – Programs Emil Cialdini (right) observes the proceedings. Emil was in awe of that flag for a long time, so when the Amvets National Department offered flag display awards this past year he jumped at the opportunity to set up the program for StorageMart. The flag statistics follows: The flag pictured is located on the property of StorageMart at 4400 S. 13th St., Milwaukee, WI. It is unique to the southside of Milwaukee due to it’s size and height. The flag is 30x60 feet and is mounted on a 150 foot pole. An electric motor within the pole provides the up and down movements of the flag. This flag is visible for blocks surrounding StorageMart and from I-894 when approaching the 13th Street overpass. It is an awesome sight to behold. Due to the unimpeded wind at full height, the flag requires repair often. Manager Mike Blaze assures the flag is kept in top shape. Storage Mart has a uniqueness of it’s own and can be viewed at web site www.storagemart.biz.

Honor Flights After a year’s absence AMVETS are once again honoring our Veterans returning home from their Honor Flight to Washington D.C. This year the rules have changed from previous years. We now must have representation at each of the Honor Flights or we will not be invited back to honor our returning Veterans. This year we have fulfilled our obligation for the flights. So far this year we have had PDC Al Willis, State Commander Dale Peterson, State Auxiliary President Carol Amborn, 2nd District Commander Dennis Burdick, State Auxiliary Chaplin Deb Burdick, Miss AMVETS White Clover Princess, and myself attending the Honor Flights. As I explained to each of the participants you can attend more than one Honor Flight each year. In the past the State Commander, the State Auxiliary President, the 2nd District Commander, the White Clover Princess, and the Sons Commander were invited to one of the Honor Flights. This year, because of the new rules we are opening the participation to Suicide Prevention and Awareness all AMVETS in addition to asking our State and District officers to attend more than one by Jim Endres, PDC Honor Flight at General Mitchell Field in Milwaukee. Remembering and Honoring Those Who Serve

This post is sponsored by the United States World War One Centennial Commission.

Preface Many people would be surprised to learn that there is no National WWI Memorial in our nation’s capital. While visitors flock to Washington, DC every year to visit memorials for World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, there is no designated memorial to pay tribute to those who fought in World War I. The time has come to recognize America’s 4.7 million sons and daughters who served in the Great War with an official memorial. Like veterans of other wars, the women and men of World War I served with valor and courage and the nation’s sacrifice was great—204,000 Americans returned home wounded and 116,516 did not come home at all. The U.S. World War One Centennial Commission is proud to be able to lead the way in establishing a National World War I memorial for the public. As of today, the site for our National WWI Memorial has been designated by Congress. An international design competition has been held with over 360 submissions. The winning design team’s concept has been developed, refined and approved by Washington’s Com- mission of Fine Arts (CFA) and the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC). This project is ready to begin but challenges remain. When Congress approved the building of the memorial, they stipulated that it was to be done without tax dollars, meaning the memo- rial must be built entirely with private funds. caught my eye was that he included little cartoon drawings in the margins, something I’ve When asked, military service personnel and veterans said they believe it is important done for my own children every single day I’ve had to be away from them during extended that this mission be accomplished.
