With the rise of DAW- based composition in popular music styles, many artists’ sole experience of musical creation is through the computer screen. I assert that the particular sonic visualizations of the DAW propagate certain assumptions about music, influencing aesthetics and adding new visually- based parameters to the creative process. I believe many of these new parameters are greatly indebted to the visual structures, interactional dictates and standardizations (such as the office metaphor depicted by operating systems such as Apple’s OS and Microsoft’s Windows) of the Graphical User Interface (GUI). Whether manipulating text, video or audio, a user’s interaction with the GUI is usually structured in the same manner—clicking on windows, icons and menus with a mouse-driven cursor. But if you examine YouTube using slightly different criteria then a new picture emerges, with the world’s biggest musical stars lagging behind chirpy 20-something Swedes (PewDiePie), wide- eyed Chilean comedians (HolaSoyGerman) and bacon-obsessed Canadian cooks (Epic Meal Time) in terms of subscriber numbers to their channels. In fact, there are no musicians among YouTube’s top five channels by subscribers, with Rihanna’s Vevo channel coming in at #6 with 14.3m – under half of PewDiePie’s 29.4m. With this in mind, we looked at five leading YouTube channels from worlds other than music to see how they have achieved their success and what musicians can learn from them, all with added comments from Patrick Walker, chief commercial officer of Rightster, the UK B2B video network and MCN. You’ve got people tossing the money, and people doing the dance.” – Ramona Inspired by true events, HUSTLERS is a comedy-drama that follows a crew of savvy strip club employees who band together to turn the tables on their Wall Street clients. At the start of 2007, Destiny (Constance Wu) is a young woman struggling to make ends meet, to provide for herself and her grandma. But it’s not easy: the managers, DJs, and bartenders expect a cut– one way or another – leaving Destiny with a meager payday after a long night of stripping. Her life is forever changed when she meets Ramona (Jennifer Lopez), the club’s top money earner, who’s always in control, has the clientele figured out, and really knows her way around a pole. The two women bond immediately, and Ramona gives Destiny a crash course in the various poses and pole moves like the carousel, fireman, front hook, ankle-hook, and stag. Another dancer, the irrepressible Diamond (Cardi B) provides a bawdy and revelatory class in the art of the lap dance. But Destiny’s most important lesson is that when you’re part of a broken system, you must hustle or be hustled. To that end, Ramona outlines for her the different tiers of the Wall Street clientele who freQuent the club. The two women find themselves succeeding beyond their wildest dreams, making more money than they can spend – until the September 2008 economic collapse. Wall Street stole from everyone and never suffered any consequences.
