Guayaquil Los Angeles Perkins Eastman, founded in 1981 and headquartered in New York City, established the Pittsburgh studio as its first branch office in 1994. The Mumbai Pittsburgh studio has occupied space on the ground floor of the historic New York Pennsylvanian building for more than 25 years, steadily growing in size to Oakland become the region’s largest architecture firm. Pittsburgh San Francisco Perkins Eastman was in the early stages of designing its new space when the coronavirus reached the United States in March. Pivoting quickly, the Pittsburgh Shanghai studio’s workplace design team modified pre-COVID-19 planning to better Stamford accommodate new, flexible, and adaptable work-from-anywhere modes, while Toronto maintaining the schedule of a spring 2021 relocation. The new space, guided Washington DC by research and findings gathered through client roundtables and staff surveys throughout the spring and early summer, reflects the very latest in workplace design thinking. “We’re reimagining what the ideal workplace should be during these uncertain times,” said Jeff Young, AIA, Co-Managing Principal of the Pittsburgh studio. -

The move is a game-changer. The Toronto firm, which has worked on many projects and initiatives over the last 15 years with Washington DC UBS, the international bank that formerly occupied this colossal building, had been asked to reposition the first level of the building when the bank moved back to New York City. After transforming the lobby and amenity spaces in the tower building at the request of George Comfort & Sons, Inc., who owns the complex with AVG Partners, Perkins Eastman liked the space so much, it decided to relocate its offices there. WWE also recently completed a lease for 415,000 square feet to relocate its headquarters to 677 Washington Blvd. The move has energized Perkins Eastman, which has been in Stamford for almost 25 years. The firm’s new, 13,300 square-foot-studio, which features natural light streaming in through 10-foot-high windows on three perimeter walls and 14- to 16-foot high ceilings, is just across the street from the Stamford Transportation Center. -

Designed by Perkins Eastman in association with Stamford Wilson Butler Architects, the $125 million, roughly 153,500 sf facility is expected to Toronto be complete in 2021.
