ABSTRACT An inventory of the understory and canopy of 4 ha of lower montane cloud forest at Monteverde, Costa Rica, yielded 190 bryophyte species: 133 hepatics, 56 mosses and 1 hornwort. Thick branches of the lower canopy were by far the richest habitat in terms of number of species (99), trunks from 1 m upwards had 65 species, lianas, shrubs, saplings, or living leaves in the understory had about 36-46 species each, and 16 species were found on rotten logs. The figures are illustrative of the great diversification of microhabitats of bryophytes in a tropical montane cloud forest. About 36% of the species, including more than half of the corticolous ones, occurred exclusively in the canopy. It appeared that the percentage ofbryophyte species restricted to the canopy may be the same in lowland and montane rain forests, in spite of the great differences in species abundance and composition in the two kinds of forest. HUNT IN describingthe monotypicgenus Zeledonia Robert Ridgway (1888) wrote, "This remarkablenew genusis so peculiarin its charactersthat I am in much doubt as to which family it belongs." For over 80 years systematistshave shared Ridgway'suncertainty. Pycraft (1905), who publishedthe only analysisof the Wrenthrush'sanatomy, asserted, "there can be no doubt about the Turdine affinities of Zeledonia." He also establishedthat Zeledonia'has only 9' obviousprimaries and 10 rectrices. Theseconflicting statements prompted Ridgway (1907: 885) to erectthe monotypicfamily Zeledoniidae. Since that time Zeledonia has been groupedeither with the Turdidae (Mayr and Amadon, 1951; Ripley, 1952, 1964; Beecher,1953) or in the family Zeledoniidae(Hellmayr, 1934; Eisenmann, 1955; Wetmore, 1960). Sibley (1968) presentednew evidencefrom egg-whiteprotein analysisshowing that placementof Zeledoniain or near the Turdidae is incorrect. His findings indicate that Zeledonia is a true nine-primaried oscine,and Sibley (1970) has placed the genusin a monotypictribe Zeledoniini,beside the tribe Parulini, in his family Fringillidae. The presentpaper presentsevidence from a life history study that supports placementof Zeledoniaamong the nine-primariedoscines. The Wrenthrush is found only in Costa Rica and western Panama. Slud (1964) cites recordsfrom the Cordillerade Tilarfin, the Cordillera Central, the mountainsbordering the southernedge of the centralplateau, and the Cordillerade Talamanca. Meal Plan: Dinner, if required. Day 2 San Jose: Poas Volcano & National Museum First thing this morning (weather tends to be clearer at this time of day) we'll leave the city and head up to Poas Volcano, one of Costa Rica’s most popular active volcanoes to visit.* Standing at almost 2700m/8,900 ft above sea level, Volcan Poas National Park is actually home to two craters. The bigger of the two craters measures 1.5 kilometers in diameter (0.9 miles) and is 300 meters deep (900 feet). At the bottom of this hole, there is a medium sized blue-green lagoon that emits boiling sulphurous gases. The other crater is called Botos Lagoon which contains cold water. While Poas Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica, don’t expect to see lava flow (the last major eruption was in 1910). However, you are likely to see steam and gases coming from the crater; occasional geyser-like eruptions have reached up to 820 ft. The main crater is easily accessed from a paved path/road which is about ½ mile from the visitors' center. We then return to the city where we'll visit the National Museum, a perfect introduction to the country's culture, biodiversity, archeology, and history all in one place. It includes a butterfly habitat, numerous ancient rock spheres (the "Easter Island heads of Costa Rica"), and colonial weapons, all housed in a fortified colonial building. -

The same day also featured Thicket Antpitta and THREE species of owl during the daytime… Ferruginous Pygmy, Crested and Spectacled Owls. 1 www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-9110 [email protected] Page Tropical Birding Trip Report COSTA RICA: The Introtour (Group 1) Feb 2017 INTRODUCTION There can be few countries in the World as welcoming to birders as Costa Rica; everywhere we went birds were plentiful and frequently people with binoculars were in attendance too. Indeed, Costa Rica makes you feel odd if you are NOT wearing a pair. We enjoyed a fantastic tour of some of the most revered sites in Costa Rican birding; we started out near San Jose in the dry Central Valley, before driving over to the Caribbean side, where foothill birding was done in and around Braulio Carrillo National Park, and held beautiful birds from the outset, like Black-and-yellow Tanager, Black-thighed Grosbeak, and daytime Spectacled and Crested Owls. A tour first was also provided by a Thicket Antpitta seen well by all. From there we continued downslope to the lowlands of that side, and the world famous La Selva Biological Station. La Selva is a place where birds feel particularly plentiful, and we racked up a heady list of birds on our one and a half days there, including Rufous and Broad-billed Motmots, Black-throated Trogon, Pale-billed, Cinnamon and Chestnut-colored Woodpeckers, Keel-billed and Yellow-throated Toucans, and Great Curassow, to name just a few of the highlights, which also included several two-toed sloths, the iconic Red-eyed Tree Frog (photo last page), and Strawberry Poison Dart Frogs of the much publicized “blue jeans” form that adorns so many tourist posters in this Sarapiqui region. -

Yet, it was still too early to experience the real explosion of bird song, which usually happens after dawn. Then, after 05:30 AM, the chorus started when a vocal Great Kiskadee broke the morning silence, followed by the scratchy notes of two Hoffmann´s Woodpeckers, a nesting pair of Inca Doves, the ascending and monotonous song of the Yellow-bellied Elaenia, and the cacophony of an (apparently!) engaged pair of Rufous-naped Wrens. This was indeed a warm welcome to magical Costa Rica! To complement the first morning of birding, two boreal migrants, Baltimore Orioles and a Tennessee Warbler, joined the bird feast just outside the hotel area. Broad-billed Motmot . Photo: D. Circling the slope of Poas volcano, we eventually reached the inspiring Bosque de Paz. With its hummingbird feeders and trails transecting a beautiful moss-covered forest, this lodge offered us the opportunity to see one of Costa Rica´s most difficult-to-see Grallaridae, the Scaled Antpitta. -

Genomic Variation Across the Yellow-Rumped Warbler Species Complex

The application of highthroughput sequencing technologies to study the genomes of related taxa now allows us to quantify, at a fine scale, the consequences of this divergence across the genome. Throughout a number of studies, a notable pattern has emerged. In many cases, estimates of differentiation across the genome are strongly heterogeneous; however, the evolutionary processes driving this striking pattern are still unclear. Here we quantified genomic variation across several groups within the Yellow-rumped Warbler species complex (Setophaga spp.), a group of North and Central American wood warblers. We showed that genomic variation is highly heterogeneous between some taxa and that these regions of high differentiation are relatively small compared to those in other study systems. We found that theclusters of highly differentiated markers between taxa occur in gene-rich regions of the genome and exhibitlow within-population diversity. We suggest these patterns are consistent with selection, shaping genomic divergence in similar genomic regions across the different populations. Our study also confirms previous results relying on fewergenetic markers that several of the phenotypically distinct groups in the system are also genomically highly differentiated, likely to the point of full species status. Tropical Birding Trip Report Costa Rica: The Introtour | July 2017 A Tropical Birding SET DEPARTURE tour Costa Rica: The Introtour July 15 – 25, 2017 Tour Leader: Scott Olmstead INTRODUCTION This year’s July departure of the Costa Rica Introtour had great luck with many of the most spectacular, emblematic birds of Central America like Resplendent Quetzal (photo right), Three-wattled Bellbird, Great Green and Scarlet Macaws, and Keel-billed Toucan, as well as some excellent rarities like Black Hawk- Eagle, Ochraceous Pewee and Azure-hooded Jay. We enjoyed great weather for birding, with almost no morning rain throughout the trip, and just a few delightful afternoon and evening showers. Comfortable accommodations, iconic landscapes, abundant, delicious meals, and our charismatic driver Luís enhanced our time in the field. Our group, made up of a mix of first- timers to the tropics and more seasoned tropical birders, got along wonderfully, with some spying their first-ever toucans, motmots, puffbirds, etc. on this trip, and others ticking off regional endemics and hard-to-get species. We were fortunate to have several high-quality mammal sightings, including three monkey species, Derby’s Wooly Opossum, Northern Tamandua, and Tayra. And on a daily basis we saw many other fantastic and odd tropical treasures like glorious Blue Morpho butterflies, enormous tree ferns, and giant stick insects!
