SECOND CIRCULAR OF THE ““INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON THE EUROPEAN OUTBREAK OF XYLELLA FASTIDIOSA IN OLIVE””

Following the first announcement of the "International Symposium on the European outbreak of Xylella fastidiosa in Olive", please find in this second circular an update on the scientific programme, on the deadlines for registration and submission of communications, registration fees and payment methods. PRELIMINARY PROGRAMME

The symposium will include plenary sessions, a field trip and two training workshops. Plenary sessions will be held in Gallipoli (October 21-22, 2014), in the Symposium venue, the Costa Brada Resort located on the white sandy shores of Gallipoli (province of Lecce), 3 km from the city centre.

A half day field trip (October 22, 2014) will be offered to the delegates with the opportunity to visit the X. fastidiosa outbreaks in the province of Lecce.

Two parallel training workshops (October 23-24, 2014) will be held at the Centro di Ricerca, Sperimentazione e Formazione in Agricoltura "Basile Caramia", in Locorotondo (province of ). These workshops are designed to provide in-depth technical information on the current serological and molecular tools for X. fastidiosa detection and on the key characteristics of the main xylem-sap feeders involved in X. fastidiosa transmission. Attendance to the workshops is limited to the 25 delegates who register first. The invited lectures and the main communication titles are not yet defined; however the topics to be addressed are reported below.

SUBMISSION OF CONTRIBUTIONS

Oral and poster presentations on the symposium topics are welcome. However, we remind you that presentations will be limited to few selected oral communications in order to avoid proposing a programme too dense. The remaining contributions will be presented as posters. In order to present a contribution, abstracts must be submitted electronically in MSWord *.doc or *.docx format to [email protected] Abstracts should be no longer than 3000 characters (spaces included). Each abstract should contain the title of the paper, the name and affiliation of the author(s) and the email address to which correspondence should be addressed. More details on the format of the abstracts and posters, and on the oral communications will be posted on the symposium website (http://www.ivv.cnr.it/xylella-symposium-2014/?lang=en).

The deadline for abstract submission is 21 September 2014.

REGISTRATION All participants are expected to complete the registration and pay the appropriate symposium and workshop fees. The deadline for registration is 21 September 2014.

Among the cost covered by the symposium registration fee: welcome reception, coffee breaks, lunches on October 21st and 22nd, field trip, transfers from the hotel to the symposium location, transportation from and to the Brindisi/Bari airport.

Among the cost covered by the workshop registration fee: coffee breaks, lunches on October 23rd and 24th, dinner on October 23rd, transfers back and forth from the Hotel to the laboratories, transportation from and to the Brindisi/Bari airport.

TRANSPORTATION

AIRPORT The Salento airport of Brindisi (Airport Papola Casale) is the closest airport, located at 77 km North from Gallipoli and at 53km South of Locorotondo. Brindisi airport is very well connected with the two main International Italian airports ( and Milan). Shuttle bus service will be available on October 20th and 21st for the participants that needs to get to Gallipoli.

However, if you plan to fly at the airport of Bari a shuttle bus service will be also available.

BY CAR

Gallipoli and Locorotondo are reachable from Bari, that is very well connected with good and fast toll highways with the most important cities, e.g. Naples (about 250 km), Rome (about 450 km) or Milan (about 800 km).

To Gallipoli: from the Highway A14 exit at Bari Nord tollbooth then proceed on the SS16 in the direction of Brindisi – Lecce; after 53km exit on Tangenziale Ovest direction of Gallipoli/Galatina; take exit 13B direction of Gallipoli, continue on SS101 for 35,4 km, then take the exit Lidi di Gallipoli direction Alezio, follow the sign for the Resort Costa Brada (40° 01' 21,08" Nord - 18° 01' 16,52" Est).

To Locorotondo: From Highway Bari Nord, take for Brindisi (SS 16), exit sign for , and proceed for 15 km following the direction to Locorotondo (40°45’17,6” – 17°20’24”).
