  • Wine & Cheese January 2020 Beer Club
Wine & Cheese January 2020 Beer Club From blustery conditions on Halloween night to unseasonably warm temperatures Christmas week, we can’t wait to see what January’s weather will hold. Needless to say, we anticipate much colder temps and with that we have two extraordinary “winter beers” for you to enjoy. The first selection is Winter Solstice Seasonal Ale from Anderson Valley Brewing Co in Boonville, California. What makes this place incredibly unique is that the original 10 barrel brewery was founded in 1987. At the time, they were one of only 20 craft breweries in the entire country and have long been considered one of the pioneers of the craft beer industry. By 1996, their 26-acre property housed a 100-barrel brewhouse, tasting room, beer garden, and is now home to the first 18-hole disc golf course. Their large solar panel array provides over 40% of their electrical needs, while 100% of the waste water is treated and used for the irrigation of their goat pastures and estate hop fields. In addition, the spent grain is given to local cows and spent hops are used as a natural fertilizer. In 2011, they established an exclusive partnership with Wild Turkey Bourbon, which brought about their Barrel Series of bourbon barrel-aged beers which have opened up unique opportunities in beer making. The second selection is Generator Doppelbock from Metropolitan Brewing in Chicago, Illinois. This type of beer is not only rich in flavor but rich in history as well. This is a sub-category of the bock style~ Doppelbocks are extra strong, rich, and weighty lagers characterized by an intense malty sweetness with a note of hop bitterness to balance the sweetness.

  • March 2, 2019 1:00-5:00Pm & 6:00-10:00Pm Bottom Lounge 1375
Saturday – March 2, 2019 1:00-5:00pm & 6:00-10:00pm Bottom Lounge 1375 W Lake Street – Chicago Vote for the Champion Beers of Chicagoland! Check out CBS swag and cast your ballot … Winners announced at 9:00 PM 2 Please respect your fellow attendees and sample responsibly. Be aware of the beer’s alcohol content by volume (abv). Inebriation will not be tolerated – you will be cut off and asked to leave. Real ale, living ale, and cask ale all refer to beer that has been naturally carbonated by yeast still in the cask (or bottle) without any added C02. The yeast that fermented your beer have been working at what they do best until days - or perhaps even less - prior to tasting your beer today. Beer that has not quite finished fermenting is added to a cask where the yeast completes its mission and produces a gentle stream of natural carbonation. Finings, which attract yeast like a beer geek to a barleywine, are also added to the cask, and draw the yeast to the bottom when their job is finally complete. For this reason, casks sit in stillage for up to a week prior to serving, so as not to upset the contents. When you see a cellarman artfully tilt a cask during the event, this is to ensure these remnants remain on the bottom. All this magic works best at cellar temperature - about 52-54F. So, while you may be a bit chilly, rest assured that your beer is lounging in absolute comfort. Great real ale is bright with a gentle carbonation served at cellar temperature, but this is affected by the condition of the beer put into the cask, when the brewery filled the cask, and when the cask was delivered.

  • (On the Application of Samuel Smith Old Brewery
5 February 2020 PRESS SUMMARY R (on the application of Samuel Smith Old Brewery (Tadcaster) and others) (Respondents) v North Yorkshire County Council (Appellant) [2020] UKSC 3 On appeal from [2018] EWCA Civ 489 JUSTICES: Lady Hale, Lord Carnwath, Lord Hodge, Lord Kitchin, Lord Sales BACKGROUND TO THE APPEAL This issue in this appeal is whether the Appellant, as local planning authority, properly understood the meaning of the word “openness” in the national planning policies applying to mineral working in the Green Belt, as expressed in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). Paragraph 90 of the NPPF (in its original 2012 form) provides: “Certain other forms of development are not inappropriate in the Green Belt provided that they preserve the openness of the Green Belt and do not conflict with the purposes of including land in the Green Belt. These are: - mineral extraction;” The application in issue in this case was for the extension of the operational face of Jackdaw Crag Quarry. This is a magnesian limestone quarry 1.5 kilometres to the south-west of Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, owned and operated by the Third Respondent, Darrington Quarries. The Appellant’s Planning and Regulatory Functions Committee on 9 February 2016 accepted their officer’s recommendation that planning permission be granted. The officer’s report detailed a wide range of planning considerations. Under the heading “Landscape impact” the report summarised the views of the Appellant’s Principal Landscape Architect, who did not object in principle to the proposal, but drew attention to the potential landscape impacts and the consequent need to ensure that mitigation measures were maximised.

Strategy for the Historic Industrial Environment The Brewing Industry A report by the Brewery History Society for English Heritage February 2010 Front cover: Detail of stained glass window in the Millennium Brewhouse, Shepherd Neame Brewery, Faversham, Kent. Design, showing elements of the brewing process, by Keith and Judy Hill of Staplehurst. Strategy for the Historic Industrial Environment The Brewing Industry A report by the Brewery History Society for English Heritage February 2010 Text by Lynn Pearson Brewery History Society, 102 Ayelands, New Ash Green, Longfield, Kent DA3 8JW www.breweryhistory.com Foreword The Brewery History Society (BHS) was founded in 1972 to promote research into all aspects of the brewing industry, to encourage the interchange of information about breweries and brewing, and to collect photographic and other archive information about brewery history. The Society publishes a Newsletter and a quarterly journal Brewery History, which first appeared in 1972. It has also published a national directory and a series of county-wide surveys of historic breweries; the Society’s archive is held by Birmingham Central Library. Further details of BHS activities may be found at <http://www.breweryhistory.com>. The ongoing threat to the historic fabric of the English brewing industry was discussed at the conference From Grain to Glass, organised jointly by English Heritage (EH), the BHS and the Association for Industrial Archaeology (AIA), which took place at Swindon on 13 June 2003; the joint BHS and Victorian Society study day From Hop to Hostelry: the brewing and licensed trades 1837 -1914 (Young’s Ram Brewery, Wandsworth, 25 February 2006); and during the AIA Ironbridge Working Weekend (Coalbrookdale, 29 April 2006).
