How to kill your wife and get away with it –

the alternative: John Mortimer also gives tips for the perfect murder. by Gyles Brandreth in the Oldie.

I was lucky enough to know Rumpole's creator, too. Sir John Mortimer QC died in 2009, aged 85, but happily Rumpole lives on. Repeats of his adventures of Ra- dio 4 (with Benedict Cumberbatch as young Rumpole) and on Talking Pictures TV (with the great Leo McKern) have been helping to keep me going through the endless months of full and semi-lockdown. As a QC, Mortimer defended a number of murderers in his time and he had rather Rednal Garage a soft spot for them. ‘I found them touchingly grateful for any little thing you Unit 5 Rednal Aerodrome could do for them,’ he told me. ‘And they had a kind of serenity about them that was quite inspiring. The murder done, a sort of peace seemed to come over their souls. They had probably killed the one person in the world who was bugging them. As he handed one of his guests a poisoned OFTEC qualified engineer - all works fully insured scone, he said, “Excuse fingers.”’ Had Sir John encountered the ‘perfect’ murder? ‘I did once defend a gangster who was accused of stabbing a man to death outside Kettner’s restaurant in Soho. Railways and the Church from Michael Davie, Churchwarden ‘God works in a mysterious way his wonders to perform’ begins the hymn by William Cowper, but the human mind also connects experiences unexpectedly. The recent announcement of a new Bishop of Stafford and the scribblings of a priest on a immediately made a connection between church and railway. A previous Bishop of Stafford was noted for his model railway and the scribbling priest was trying to get inspiration for a railwayman’s funeral. There are a num- ber of songs that have an association between life and the railway and heaven, though they occur in lesser known hymn books. Jonny Cash had a hit with ‘Life is like a mountain railway’ whilst ‘Taking the train to heaven’ is probably more directly associated with a funeral. Those sufficiently senior to remember the tel- evision programme ‘The Good Old Days’ will recall the oft sung melody ‘Give me a ticket to Heaven’. This was a story about a little girl who wanted a ticket to ride a train to heaven where she thought her father had gone: in fact he had gone to hospital, but the song was guaranteed to bring a handkerchief to the eyes. A hymn, mostly found in American hymnals, possibly inspired by Mark 13;26, which speaks of Christ coming in clouds with power and glory, is Studdert Ken- nedy’s ‘When through the whirl of wheels’. This hymn includes verses describ- ing furnace flares aburning, flames and clouds. Studdert-Kennedy, better known as Woodbine Willie, wrote this hymn for the Industrial Christian Fellowship. The clergy and railways have a well established link. From an earlier age, the 1953 film ‘The Titfield Thunderbolt’ saw the local priest, Sam Weech, involved in getting a railway going for his local village. Probably more people will re- member the stories by the Rev Wilbert Awdry. The stories began when Awdry’s son was ill during the Second World war and some stories were required to keep his son amused. Hence Thomas the Tank engine was born. Awdry was ordained in 1936 and was Rural Dean of before retiring to Rodborough in . His creation however is remembered in two church windows. One is at in where he was vicar from 1953-65 and the other, showing him closing an engine shed door is in Rod- borough church. Awdry was a great friend of Teddy Boston, vicar of Cadeby, who had both small models and larger live steam models. He had a scale model of the old Great Western railway and reportedly encouraged youngsters into church by promising them ‘a go’ on his model railway. Teddy Boston was rather rotund and may have been the model for the ‘Fat Clergyman’ and possibly even Sir Topham Hatt (The ‘Fat Controller’) in Awdry’s Railway series books. Visi- tors to Cadeby church will notice the windows dedicated to the former incum- bent. In recent years our local clergy have upheld the connection between the church and the railway. Many will remember that our erstwhile assistant priest, Tony Sparham, had a model railway in his garden shed and at Tedsmore Rev Robert Parker has built a notable 0 gauge railway.

Moreton Hall Prep Pupils Help Make Magical Wishes Come True in Charity Santa Run

Moreton Hall Prep School in Weston Rhyn have raised a staggering £900 in spon- sorship during their annual Santa Run, held within the 100 acre grounds at More- ton Hall. On a fresh December morning 90 pupils from the independ- ent school spread festive cheer in a sea of red Santa cos- tumes to raise funds and help make magical wishes come true for families who depend on the vital service provided by The Movement Centre in Oswestry. The UK charity and specialist treatment centre support chil- dren and their families living with movement disabilities. The Movement Centre provide targeted training therapy to enable children to develop new skills and become far more independent which can have a huge impact on their life. The centre is currently the only one in the world providing this type of therapy and rely on support and donations to make sure children across the UK get the life-changing help they need. Year 1 pupil Isla Borrett who donated her birthday money to the charity said “Having lots of money doesn’t matter, but helping children that can’t walk does.” Silvia Grace, Acting Headteacher of Moreton Prep said, “It was a magical mo- ment to see a parade of red Santas of all sizes flowing out of Moreton Prep to go on their run, the Santas knowing that their run was for a good cause and that other children would benefit from their efforts. Well done, Santas. A truly superb event and many thanks to all the parents for their generous donations.”

(Continued from page 35) County Councillor Charmley In May we are due to have local elections once more, no doubt this will depend very much on how Coronavirus continues to affect our daily lives. I am delighted to announce that I will be standing once again, hoping to be re-elected and contin- ue to work hard for the communities who have put their trust in me previously. I have refrained from hand delivering any election material so far, as I don’t think it’s the right thing to do during a pandemic. We will need to see what the election guidance says, but I do not expect to be al- lowed to operate the normal routine, which will be a great shame as I always enjoy meeting as many residents as possible. If residents want to discuss anything regarding the Parish, please feel free to email me at: [email protected] I wish you well for 2021. Regards, Steve Charmley

Stokes Tree Works America’s Once Most Popular Pets NPTC Qualified Tree Surgeons enjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers, even wrote an ode to a fallen one. In 1722, a pet squirrel named Mungo passed away. It was a DIFFICULT TREES OUR SPECIALITY B tragedy: Mungo escaped its confines and met its fate at the teeth of a dog. Benjamin Franklin, friend of the owner, immortalized the squirrel Lopping * Felling * Pruning * Shaping with a tribute. “Few squirrels were better accomplished, for he had a good educa- tion, had travelled far, and seen much of the world.” Franklin wrote, adding, to British Standard Specifications “Thou art fallen by the fangs of wanton, cruel Ranger!” 01691 870300 or 07811 320982 Mourning a squirrel’s death wasn’t as uncommon as you might think when Frank- lin wrote Mungo’s eulogy; in the 18th- and 19th centuries, squirrels were fixtures in American homes, especially for children. While colonial Americans kept many types of wild animals as pets, squirrels were the most popular, being relatively easy to keep. By the 1700s, a golden era of squirrel ownership was in full swing. Squirrels were sold in markets and found in the homes of wealthy urban families, and portraits of well-to-do children holding a reserved, polite upper-class squirrel attached to a gold chain leash were proudly displayed (some of which are currently at the Met- ropolitan Museum of Art). Most pet squirrels were American Grey Squirrels, though Red Squirrels and Flying Squirrels also were around, enchanting the coun- try with their devil-may-care attitudes and fluffy bodies. Books were written about keeping them as domestic pets, and the management of this “beautiful little creature, very agile and graceful in its movements.” Squirrels “may be taught to jump from one hand to the other to search for a hidden nut, and it soon knows its name, and the persons who feed it.” Their habits, like jumping around a room and peeping out from wooden eaves, were applauded. One writer advised: “when your squirrel is not running around the room, provide it with a tin- lined cage that has a running wheel.” Leisure Hour Monthly, meanwhile, in 1859, advised to feed it “a fig or a date now and then,” and that you should start your squirrel-raising adventure with those procured “directly from the nest, when pos- sible.” The unnamed author’s own pet squirrels, Dick and Peter, had the freedom of his bedroom and plenty of nuts to store away. “Let your pet squirrels crack their own nuts, my young squirrel fanciers,” the author wrote. While many people captured their pet squirrels from the wild in the 1800s, squir- rels were also sold in pet shops. One home manual from 1883 explained that any squirrel could be bought from your local bird breeder. Border Physiotherapy Keeping pet squirrels has a downside for humans which eventually became clear: Amanda Coxhead MCSP despite their owners’ best attempts at taming them, they’re still wild animals. As time wore on, squirrels were increasingly viewed as pests; by the 1910s squirrels Stroke Rehabilitation / Paediatrics became so despised in California that the state issued a widespread public attack on the once-adored creatures. From the 1920s through the 1970s many states Home Visits slowly adopted wildlife conservation and exotic pet laws, which prohibited keep- ing squirrels at home. Today, experts and enthusiasts alike warn that squirrels don’t always make ideal pets, mainly because of their finicky diet, space require- www.border-physiotherapy.co.uk ments, and scratchy claws. 32 21
