TECNIFIBRE ENGLISH JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

2-4 March – Colets Health Club & Surrey Sports Park

This weekend will see the finest junior squash players in the country travel to Surrey to compete in the English Junior Championships (EJC) . This event has now established itself as a major event in the calendar, complimenting the traditional Tecnifibre British Junior Championships and the Tecnifibre British Junior Open, giving the players the opportunity to fight it out for a coveted English National title. Colets Health Club and Surrey Sports Park will host 250 players from 2-4 March for three days of fiercely competitive squash.

Declan James (Nottinghamshire) will be hoping to defend his BU19 title as he plays this competi- tion for the last time before moving out of the juniors. Looking to stop him will be Tom Ford (Gloucestershire) the second seed who is hunting for his first National Title along with county com- patriot Oliver Holland (Nottinghamshire) who is a 3/4 seed. The Girls U19 event will see the reign- ing GU17 Champion Victoria Temple Murray (Devon) come into the competition as favourite, her main challenge will come from last year’s GU19 beaten finalist Katie Smith (Yorkshire) who will be hoping to go one better this time round. Samantha Ward (Northumbria) and Chloe Pearson (Warwickshire) are also in contention and will be looking to cause an upset.

The Boys U17 event will see former BU15 Champion Richie Fallows (Essex) return as hot favourite to take another title with the second seed Lyell Fuller (Devon) his main threat. Current British Girls U17 champion Ellie Lake (Gloucestershire) will be looking to consolidate her position as the best U17 player in the country as she hopes to add the EJC title to her collection, she is seeded to face last year’s GU15 EJC champion Lucy Beecroft (Northumbria) in the final.

In the Girls U15’s , the current British GU15 champion Georgina Kennedy (Kent) will also be looking to make it to the end of the season as a double champion, she will face stiff competition from Amelia Henley (Kent) who will be raring to go in this event after missing out on the British Junior Champion- ships earlier in the season. James Peach (Yorkshire) narrowly missed out on collecting a BJC title this season after reaching the final and will be looking to go one better in this competition, his main rival will come from Patrick Rooney (Merseyside) who has enjoyed success in this event as a pre- vious BU13 champion. Elise Lazarus (Essex) is favourite to claim the Girls U13 title with Jasmine Hutton (Sussex) also hoping for success while current Boys U13 BJC Champion Curtis Malik (Sussex) looks to continue his great form by collecting a first EJC title. His main challenger looks to be second seed Todd Bennett (Gloucestershire) who will be searching for his first major honours.

Both venues have fantastic facilities and plenty of viewing. Play begins at 9.00am on Friday with the finals scheduled for Sunday afternoon. All spectators wishing to watch the best junior players in the country are invited to attend the event free of charge.

Roehampton Club University Cup 2012 – A fantastic weekend of squash!

Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 February 2012 saw Roehampton Club host the 3 rd ‘Roehampton Club University Cup’ sponsored by Reliable Networks and supported by BUCS.

After only three years, and due to unprecedented demand from the Universities themselves, the event has grown from a one-day competition between eight teams, to an entire weekend involving sixteen teams, a minimum of five matches and a growing waiting list

Any concerns about the weather causing travel problems (with team travelling from as far as Aberdeen and Dur- ham) were dispelled as over 80 players plus supporters and friends descended on the club, with play beginning promptly at 9.30AM - a tribute to the organizational skills and the enthusiasm of the Universities’ squash sections. Matches were ‘timed’ at 22 minutes continuous play, with American scoring, best of three games. The matches continued throughout the day until 19:30, with the four groups of four teams playing three group matches on the Saturday, to determine Sunday’s Quarterfinalists - and the remaining teams competing for places nine to sixteen. At the close of group matches on Saturday and before his appearance as guest speaker at the Gala dinner, the former world number 1, MBE would be participating in an exhibition match against his friend and long time training partner, Women’s Squash Association (WSA) Tour Director, Tim Garner.

Of course everyone wanted to watch but there was only room for half of the spectators! But thankfully our superb sponsors - and IT whizzes - Reliable Networks had arranged to have this live-streamed to a clubhouse screen (very close to the bar), another technological first for the Roehampton Club!

Peter & Tim treated the crowd to a true exhibition of squash shots and movement as they (metaphorically) pushed each other around the court creating angles some thought impossible. Rivalry between these two has always been friendly, but with a serious sub-plot. Bragging rights between encounters being the ultimate prize! Tim continues to play at very high level and Peter, having had distinguished squash career, never likes to lose.

Peter started quickly with some fierce attacking shots, keeping Tim on the back foot wondering where his oppo- nent would hit the ball next. Slowly Tim got into his rhythm and clawed his way back into the first game. But the early lead Peter had built up was too much for Tim, so it was 1 st blood to Peter 11-9. The level of play continued to wow the spectators, as did the rising level of banter and ‘pressure’ on the guest scorers/referees, and with shots played between legs, from behind their backs and corkscrew shots. The watching crowd gained both sore necks and some ‘interesting’ ideas for shots when they were next on court.

Tim went two games to one down with Peter showing exactly why he was world number one for so long, too often a cross court rolling ‘nick’ had Tim scratching his head on where to put the ball. A change of tactic or possible su- perior fitness! Not sure exactly which one it was but Tim kept the pressure up throughout the fourth game and a few mistakes from Peter , combined with Tim’s winning shots, saw the match leveled at 2-2. By this time everyone was meant to be showered, changed and ready for the gala dinner! An ‘Executive decision’ agreed between the players and the Club Professional was to play a sudden death point, winner takes all. Only one of them has a good record in this single point format….Tim, played one won one. Peter, played lots, not winning many!! So it was down to the final rally, with neither player wanting to make a mistake whilst both seeking the winning shot into the ‘nick’. The point was played at a fast and furious pace until till a loud noise finished the exhibition….Peter ,with head in hands, was a picture for all to see….one shot too low into the Tin and Tim kept his 100% record in sudden death points and current bragging rights. The watching crowd was extremely appreciative of what was a superb exhibition of squash.

All players and guests were then invited to take their seats at the gala dinner. This commenced with a speech of welcome by Roehampton Club’s Chief Executive, Marc Newey. After supper, Paul Lindsay, the Roehampton Club’s Head Squash Professional and tournament organizer, updated the players with the day’s results and posi- tions, letting the teams know who their Sunday opponents would be. Paul then introduced guest speaker, Peter Nicol MBE. Peter with his knowledge of squash, his authority within the game, his engaging personality and his high profile support for the event had the crowd listening to every word. His speech ranged from his opinion of squash training methods and level of commitment to the sport’s current state of development and its future. The evening was a great success and the post match activity reflected both the prestige of the event and the teams’ differing expectations. For the quarter-finalists there was time for maybe one more drink and a ‘relatively ‘ early night, for other teams it was a rare opportunity to visit less ‘sporting’ clubs, and enjoy some of London night- life.

Sunday’s play provide competitive squash from the first matches to the last, with each and every team wanting to win the tournament or just finish as high up the league table as possible. The semi finals saw Cambridge beating Bristol 3-2 in a very close match with an extremely high level of play and Sheffield beating Kings College London 4-1. The final between Cambridge & Sheffield would always be close but the Cambridge middle order proved too strong, as it had done during the tournament, with a 3-2 win. Congratulations to Cambridge! The expanded tournament, sponsored by Reliable Networks and endorsed by British Universities & Colleges Sport proved a great success with every University already looking forward to next year. Anyone interested in a full report and result details, including event photos or enquires for entry in 2013 please contact Paul Lindsay.

Over at TasterLab, we believe everyone should have an activity or hobby in their life they feel passionately about. It’s so easy to get caught up in the monotony of the work/home/work/home cycle that we let our free time slip away from us without using it to do something we really care about. It’s also really easy to get over- whelmed by all of the options out there and not know where to start. That’s why we try to make it as simple as possible for people to discover something new to love. You’re reading this because you love squash and racketball, and we think that’s great! CANARY WHARF SQUASH CLASSIC 2012 YOUNG EGYPTIANS CHALLENGE TOP ENGLISH STARS By ALAN THATCHER James Willstrop warmed up for the Canary Wharf Classic by winning the Davenport in Richmond, Virginia. Willstrop, who is bidding for a fourth Canary Wharf title this year, is enjoying the best form of his career. He has reached the final of six of his last eight tournaments and has racked up four PSA World Series titles since November in the game’s elite series of events. He is returning to world No.1 in the March rankings but his great rival Nick Mat- thew is top seed at Canary Wharf. London’s premier squash tournament is being staged at the superb East Wintergarden venue from March 19-23 and tickets have already sold out for the semi-finals and final. Squash fans are clearly intrigued by the massive rivalry between England’s two leading players, who are both from Yorkshire. Despite Willstrop’s current success, Matthew has beaten him 15 times in a row, including the final of the Tournament of Champions in New York and the British National Cham- pionships in Manchester. They avoided meeting in the North American Open as Matthew crashed to a rare straight-games de- feat to Egyptian in the semi-finals. Willstrop went on to beat Ashour with a commanding performance that denied his opponent any op- portunities to display his outstanding shot-making abilities. Willstrop said: “I had to find a way to contain Ramy’s attacking play. He will hit winners all day if you let him but I was very pleased with the way I played.” Willstrop had removed No.3 seed Gregory Gaultier of France in a 97-minute semi-final and added: “That gave me a lot of confidence going into the final. It was a wonderful feeling over Christmas know- ing that I was going to be world number one for the first time and I was very disappointed to lose it the next month. It made me determined to win it back, and I was pleased to play well enough to get back to number one in March.” World champion Matthew Tweeted: “I don’t think many people expected that result in the Richmond final. James played a tactical master-class and deserved the win.” He was realistic about his own form and shortcomings in Richmond, especially in his loss to Ashour. The first two games went to tiebreaks and Matthew, who blew leads of 10-7 in the first and 8-4 in the second, admitted: “I have got some important lessons to learn from that. It was hard to push on in the third when I could and possibly should have been 2-0 up. I was weak in the third, though.” There are plenty of Egyptians lying in wait in the Canary Wharf draw, including No.4 seed and his younger brother Marwan. Marwan succeeded his bother as world junior cham- pion and both have made significant impact on the senior rankings, with Mohamed rising to number six earlier this year. Mohamed has been drawn against wild card , from Surrey, and Marwan meets fellow Egyptian , who enjoyed a shock victory over Matthew in Qatar last year. Matthew meets Mohamed Ali Anwar Reda in the first round and is seeded to meet England team- mate in the quarter-finals. Willstrop has been drawn against his Leeds-based training partner, , the Indian num- ber one. East-Ender Peter Barker, the number three seed who has been struggling injury since Christmas, is in line for a tough quarter-final against German number one Simon Rosner, who gave Matthew a hard time in Richmond. Fellow Londoner Adrian Grant is scheduled to meet Mohamed El Shorbagy in the quarters. Joint promoter Peter Nicol said: “It is an intriguing draw with the top English players and so many tal- ented Egyptians coming over this year. I am sure it will guarantee another week of entertaining squash for our loyal and knowledgeable audience at Canary Wharf.” Tickets for the 2012 Canary Wharf Classic cost from £15 and are available from Ticketmaster. The fabulous East Wintergarden offers superb opportunities for corporate hospitality, with the gallery res- taurant offering “the best view of squash anywhere in the world” according to Nicol. The qualifying competition takes place at Wimbledon Racquets and Fitness Club on March 17-18 with four winners joining the top 12 seeds in the main draw. MATCH REPORT (PSL) Team Chichester –v- Integrity Surrey – Round 8

This week Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club’s Premier Squash League team played its penultimate home match of the 2011/2012 season. The Chichester squad played current champions and leaders of the league (Group B) Integrity Surrey H & R; a tough undertaking for the city squad. Lauren Briggs, currently world No.32, started Chichester’s campaign and played Alison Waters (world ranked 41), in a repeat of the 2012 National Championship semi-final. Alison is returning to form after injury and on the night was in fantastic form and ran through a 1/11, 5/11, 3/11 to put Surrey 0.1 up. On the adjacent glass-back court, Anthony Graham (WR116) played Surrey’s Alan Clyne (WR35). Graham started well and built up a 9/5 lead, with great lengths and by using good holds in the front of the court. Thereafter his pa- tience deserted him and Clyne edged back to take the game 10/12. Exactly the same happened in the second game; Graham forged ahead to reach 9 first before Clyne reeled him back to take it 10/12. A long road back for Graham failed to materialise and Clyne took the 3 rd game 3/11 and a 0.2 lead for Surrey Next on court 4 Chichester’s Alex Gough (former WR5) started well against (WR55). Gough was very competitive and with some great anticipation and reading of Waller’s cross courts he took the first game 11/9. Waller fought back to take the 2 nd , 3/11. Waller then maintained the pressure and went on to win the match 8/11, 5/11. This gave Surrey an unassailable 0.3. lead. Meanwhile on the glass-back championship court Sussex No.1 and WR66, Olly Pett, took the first game against WR17, Adrian Grant. He played fast attacking squash and hit good straight lengths and used his volley drop to great effect. Grant then came back at Pett and started hitting better lengths and took the pace down a little; consequently Pett’s rhythm started to go and Grant took the game 4/11. In the 3 rd Pett impatiently looked for winners too soon allowing Grant to take it 4/11 and a 1.2. lead. In the 4 th Pett regained his rhythm and fought back well to win it 11/9 to force the match into a decider. Both players were wary at the start of the early exchanges and tried to weigh up each other’s game. The game was never more than a couple of points apart and eventually they reached 9-all. Grant held his nerve against the fearless, young rising star, who is ranked 49 places below him, to eventually win the match 9/11. 0.4 to Surrey. The final match on the glass-back was between number one strings Robbie Temple (WR60) and Surrey’s Peter Barker (WR7). Barker started strongly and reached 9 first before Temple gamely fought back to level the score. Both players were striking good lengths with crisp hitting and tight straight drops. There was nothing between them before Barker squeezed it 12/14. In the 2 nd the exchanges were even to the mid-way point when Barker stepped up the pressure and Temple hit the tin a few times to give Surrey the 2 nd game, 5/11. The 3 rd game was again evenly played to 4-all but thereafter Barker was always ahead and took the game 7/11 to give Surrey an emphatic 0.5 victory. It was, however, a thoroughly entertaining evening of exciting squash. With 2 rounds to go Team Chichester is away to Winchester in 2 weeks time with the final match of the season on 27 th March, at home to Bristol. By Mike Phillips (Team Chichester Manager)
