EDITORIAL We receive more correspondence on dog mess than on any other subject. We have received yet another, sadly anony- mous so we can’t print it, complaining about children stepping into it, walking it into the car, getting it on the seats and their clothes. It’s tough to know what more we can do to stop this nuisance and proven health hazard. Most people walking their dogs are very conscientious and do clear up afterwards, al- though there are always a few who don’t think the rules apply to them. The worst offenders are possibly people who let their dogs out unsupervised, to mess where they choose so they pretend not to know. If you are one of those people, please spare a thought for our children and for your village. Please don’t let your dog out to spread it’s mess indiscriminately. He was educated at the Church School before beginning a lifetime working in the Spar Mines, firstly for Ernest Dawson, then for Bill Eyre at Creswell Park and lastly at Longstone Edge. He married Christine Nowill and they lived at Brook Buildings before moving to Elliott Avenue. Derek was a keen gardener, specialising in growing leeks and onions and entering shows in the Durham area and latterly at Froggatt. He raised racing pigeons, flying them several times a year form the continent. He leaves his wife Christine, son Neil, daughter Clare, grandchildren Mia, Ryan, Nicola and Jake, sister Brenda and brother Trevor. The funeral was at St Barnabas Church on 31st January, followed by burial.
