Introduction 1 Clive Barker, ‘Cenobite’, 1986. cintro.indd 1 8/2/2017 10:35:01 AM cintro.indd 2 8/2/2017 10:35:02 AM ‘To darken the day and brighten the night’: Clive Barker, dark imaginer S o r c h a N í F h l a i n n In one of his more in-depth television interviews, while promoting his newly published novel Weaveworld in 1987, Clive Barker was introduced by host John Nicolson as having such a remarkable impact on the horror genre that, some believed, ‘it could only be the product of a diseased mind’. 1 Rather than directly insult Barker on television, the description actually amused the author, a gleeful grin spreading across his youthful, handsome face. Th e television show, BBC ’ s Open to Question , was far removed from the more typical book promotion television shows or talk show slots during which hosts gently prod and chat with the author to showcase their new novel. Th e thirty-minute interview quickly proceeded to take the form of a confrontational interrogation, with Barker positioned to off er a defence for the ‘indefensible’ horror genre. Topics were dominated by audience-led comments and queries which evidenced the cultural residue of moral panic, following on from the video nasty crisis that had gripped the UK in the early 1980s. Th ere was a particular emphasis on the potential for copycat killings inspired by his work, or the potential viral spread of violence which, at any moment, threatened to burst forth from the screen simply because of Barker ’ s appearance on the show. -

A silver-faced clown perched on a trapeze. The TITLES end. WIDEN to reveal the workshop of PHILLIP LEMARCHAND lit by candlelight. The automata stand on wooden shelves which line the room along with plans and drawings. At the workbench, Phillip – handsome, 30, obsessed by his craft – is hunched over his work, keeping us from seeing it. Super-imposed: THE OUTSKIRTS OF PARIS 1784 There’s a strange atmosphere. Perhaps it’s the CRAZY SHADOWS thrown by the flickering candles. Perhaps it’s the sound of the WIND in the midnight darkness outside. Perhaps it’s the amplified HEARTBEAT of Phillip. Storyline The player assumes the role of an employee at the VR Research Labs, a company dedicated to the development of Virtual Reality entertainment devices. Security is strict at VR Labs due to the current feeding frenzy occurring in the hi-tech entertainment industry, and the fact that VR Labs is within a few months of revealing the first working model of a Multi-Universe Personal Transporter (MUPT). Nicknamed the “Hot Seat”, this $14 million dollar machine could graphically simulate any environment imaginable by man and provide all the possible physical, as well as psychological, sensations associated with that environment. Of course, no one could actually prove that there were psychological effects resulting from use of the Hot Seat, other than unanimous reports of sheer exhilaration. The news media, hungry for doomsday tidbits to feed the public’s sensationalistic appetite, probed and focused on the possible negative repercussions of such a device on the human mind. But reliable inside information on the Hot Seat was scarce, and the statements occasionally released through VR Labs’ PR department consistently echoed the company’s belief that only positive side effects could be experienced from the device’s use. The media, however, treated these reports of psychological benefits as typical hi-tech hype - exaggerations of its inventor and programmer, Charles “Chip” Reddin. Chip was a technological genius and, according to others who worked with him, a certifiable lunatic. In the world of technological research and development, as is sometimes said of the art world, this is a totally acceptable and harmless combination. In Chip’s case....it was to prove deadly. -

HELLRAISER II : HELLBOUND Screenplay by Peter Atkins Original Story by Clive Barker 2nd. Draft November 1, 1987 FADE IN: 1 TITLES The screen is composed of large, straight-edge areas of black and white that rest against each other in a manner that suggests some kind of pattern, without making a final sense; it is as if we are too close to something that, could we see it from a distance, would be clear to us. These areas shift and change - both their own shape and their relationship to their neighbors. New patterns are being made, new solutions found - but they are just beyond our comprehension. The effect should be aesthetically pleasing but simultaneously frustrating and, perhaps, a little unsettling. Shortly into this sequence, and subsequently inter-cut throughout, we begin to see, in FLASHBACK, the story of HELLRAISER. Arriving first as very short shock-images, these brief sections eventually convey to the audience all the necessary emotional and narrative information they will need to understand the background to HELLBOUND. Meanwhile, the black and white shapes are still moving, the unseen patterns still shifting. Over this constantly mobile background, the TITLES begin to appear. As the TITLES unroll, another change comes over the puzzle pieces behind them. Where before they moved and related only in two dimensions, gradually we see that they are now claiming depth as well. The puzzle we are looking at is now a three-dimensional one. The pieces are now solid blocks of various geometric shapes, locking together, moving apart, finding their final position. Finally, as the TITLES come to their conclusion, the camera pulls back until we can see clearly what we have been looking at. -
