The Book Heritage Themes of Boka Kotorska Is a Se- Lection of Scholarly Papers, Essays and Reviews by Vinicje B
Summary The book Heritage Themes of Boka kotorska is a se- lection of scholarly papers, essays and reviews by Vinicje B. Lupis, who for two decades has been systematically involved in research into the cultural heritage of Boka kotorska and of the indigenous Croatian community living in neighbouring Montenegro. The book encom- passes a selection of topics from history, art history, ar- chitecture, literature and the study of reliquaries. In the chapter “The Cult and Veneration of the Petilovrijenci in Dubrovnik and Kotor”, the author studies the cult of the Boka kotorska martyrs SS. Peter, Andrew and Lawrence, called in Dubrovnik the Petilovrijenci, which he follows from its beginnings. The cult of the sainted brothers the Petilovrijenci is a unique hagiographic and cultural phe- nomenon of the Middle Ages in Dubrovnik and Kotor. In the chapter “Marin de Gosti – donor of two relics to Kotor Cathedral during the first half of the 14th centu- ry”, especial attention is devoted to a reconstruction of the noble Kotor family de Gosti of the 14th century and the art of goldsmithing in medieval Kotor. Pursuant to an examination of the treasury of the Cathedral of St Tryphon (Tripun) and an overview of the published no- tarial records of the Kotor chancellery, the author has established a connection between Kotor aristocrat Ma- rin de Gosti, son of Junius, and two reliquaries with the signature and coat of arms of the donor. Goldsmithing, particularly goldsmithing for religious purposes, has never been systematically studied in any integrated in- terdisciplinary research, and so the author has also studied a previously unknown component of goldsmith- ing in Bar. -

Saša Brajović - Milena Ulčar
Saša Brajović - Milena Ulčar Legends, Images and Miracles of the Virgin Mary in the Bay of Kotor in Early Modern Period UDC: 7.04:75.051(497.16 Kotor)”14/16” Saša Brajović University of Belgrade, Serbia [email protected] Milena Ulčar University of Belgrade, Serbia [email protected] The aim of this paper is to present two icons of the Virgin from the Bay of Kotor: their iconography, style, but above all the legends about them, the miracles they performed and, in particular, the ways in which these wonders were used in the pro- cess of constituting the legitimacy of the communes and the region. At the root of the myth of Our Lady of the Reef was the political aspiration of the citizens of Perast to consolidate their domination over the broader territory. The citizens of Prčanj had a similar aspiration. But, while the creation of the cult of Our Lady of the Reef was officially based and rested on the heroic and masculine principle, the establishment of the cult of Our Lady of Prčanj, the cult of the icon of Italo-Cretan origin was based quite opposite, on the private and women’s domain. Therefore, the creation of the Virgin cults in the early modern Bay performed a variety of cultural roles. The two icons followed the meticulously designed Post-Tridentine model of link- ing sacral and political power and both served as mirrors of social hierarchy. However, the dynamic nature of their cultural impact, which involved more than subtle differences in the ways in which the two Virgins were produced and consumed, resulted in the justification of local cults.
