Strong Run for Larson Results in Third Place Finish at Dover International Speedway

The NASCAR Series (NSCS) headed north this past weekend to Dover International Speedway – the Monster Mile – a track at which has enjoyed a bit of success. The Target team put together their most complete weekend of the season, consistently improving throughout the practice sessions on the way to earning their highest starting position of the year. On Sunday, Larson took advantage of the third-place start and a fast Target Chevy to turn in a third-place finish, his best yet this season.

The weekend began with a car that was fast off the truck and showed good balance as the team worked to prepare it for qualifying. During qualifying, Larson transferred to the third and final round for the tenth time this season, ultimately earning a third place start for Sunday’s race. On the final day of practice, the team continued to steadily improve the car, making good gains in speed and balance as they approached the start of the race.

Although Larson started the 400 lap race with a car that was a little loose-handling, the car would ultimately handle a bit tight for the majority of the race. The minor handling issues fortunately did not hinder Larson much, as he raced in the top-10 for all of the first 280 laps. Larson was slowed briefly with about 100 laps remaining and dropped out of the top-10, but adjustments during a green flag pit stop on Lap 326 improved the balance of the Target Chevy and Larson steadily moved back towards the front of the pack. Towards the end of the race Larson took advantage of restarts following three late cautions, beginning on Lap 377, to steadily pick up spots and earn a third-place finish, his highest of the season and best-ever at Dover in the NSCS.

With the finish, Larson moves up to 20th in the NSCS driver point standings.

NOTES OF INTEREST:

• Larson picked up his second top-10 finish at Dover in three NSCS races • Larson gained seven spots in the final 10 percent of the race and was tied with four other drivers for most positions gained in the final laps; he was the highest finisher among the five drivers • Larson ran 97.3% of the race in the top-15 • Larson had the fourth-highest driver rating, one spot behind race-winner Jimmie Johnson • The Target team made five pit stops during the race and had the third-fastest pit road time behind runner-up Kevin Harvick and winner Jimmie Johnson, who each made four stops • The race lead changed hands 15 times between nine drivers • The caution flag was shown seven times for a total of 40 laps

TCGRFS QUOTEBOARD

Kyle Larson, Driver, No. 42 Target Chevrolet SS – “We had a really good run today in the Target Chevy. It’s the first top-three finish of the year, and the first real solid finish of the year for us. Proud of the Target team for the job they did to rebound from last week and bring a better car to the racetrack. It was just a nice solid day. We ran in the top-10 for most the day, and even though we got off a bit at the midpoint of the race, we got back going in the right direction. Happy with the finish and the work everyone has put in to have us running better. We’ll go to Pocono next week; a track I enjoy, and hopefully we can do well there too.”

McMurray Battles Back for Seventh-Place Finish at Monster Mile

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) made stop number 13 on the 2015 schedule at Dover International Speedway, nicknamed the “Monster Mile” for its high-banks, concrete racing surface and close-quarters tough racing action. Jamie McMurray and the No. 1 McDonald’s/Cessna team got back on the road after racing close to home at the previous two weeks, looking to tame the monster. The No. 1 team battled hard through an up-and-down race to capture a seventh-place finish.

From the drop of the green flag on Sunday’s race, McMurray charged toward the front of the 43-car field, racing among the top-10, before cutting a left rear tire on lap 153, while running ninth. The pit stop to change the cut tire came during a normal cycle of green flag stops for other teams, so the loss of track-position was minimal. Later in the race, McMurray struggled with an extremely loose handling car, eventually falling one lap down to the leaders. With the benefit of several late-race cautions, the No. 1 team was able to get back on the lead lap for the green-white-checkered attempt and finish the 405-lap race with a seventh-place result.

With his finish, McMurray gained one position to seventh place in the NSCS point standings.

NOTES OF INTEREST

• This was McMurray’s fifth top-10 finish of the season • McMurray was tied for first in the closers category, positions improved in the last 10% of the race, gaining seven positons in the last 40 laps of the FedEx 400 • The FedEx 400 was slowed by caution seven times for 40 laps

CGRFS Quoteboard: Jamie McMurray – No. 1 McDonald’s/Cessna Chevrolet SS: – “We got off on the next-to-last run really badly, the car just got really loose. We were fortunate with the cautions at the end that really helped us get back on the lead lap and pick up several positions. I thought we had about a 12th-place car and finished seventh so it was a really good day.”
